I think there is always going to be a problem when the character in question is supposed to be 'overwhelmingly beautiful'. They have to choose someone, and there are always going to be people out there who say 'what?! that person is hideous!' The same thing happened with Edward Cullen. A character that is basically described as the universal beauty, someone that EVERYONE finds the most attractive under every circumstance, is not possible to cast. They might as well just go with the hype and pick the person that is considered very hot right now, then they have a good chance of having the majority of moviegoers being okay with it.

Oh, God, that vid...

My butt was in permanent terror clench for days after I watched that.

I couldn't imagine being a music snob. Just think of all the music you could be missing because you* won't give it a chance because it doesn't measure up to your standards.

I really don't understand why this was such an issue. Yes, if you're being shallow, Theron blows Stewart out of the water. But in the context of the move:

- The evil queen's beauty is artificial
- Inner beauty - the queen was beautiful but her soul was ugly

But everybody kept focusing on the superficial. I don't think it was sexism (though, there was probably some of that - women constantly get their worth judged based on their looks) so much as people just have an irrational hatred of KS.

Shhh, huge age gaps and outright abuse are OK but even we CLAMP fans have to draw the line at heterosexual incestual kisses.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-25 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, considering your comment you made earlier (about people not sharing every single bit of your head cannon and that being the deal breaker), I think you've gone well in to entitled territory.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-25 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, you still have Sherlock fans raging about female, Asian Watson and the NY setting (and the particularly amusing ones raging about JLM's "fake English accent"). Then you have the "subtle" ones saying they don't like Elementary because they totally read all the books and it doesn't match canon. While a legit reason for disliking Elementary, there are those who say this is the case, but when they start describing canon, they're really describing 'Sherlock'.

Then the Elementary fans react way out of proportion for the most part (IMHO) so, yeah, the Elementary tag can be quite unpleasant.

Although, it has resulted in some amusing crossover fanart: http://nowisthewinter.tumblr.com/post/34107925802/new-fandom-goal-crossover-all-the-versions-of

One person I friended on LJ due to similar fandoms ended up being one of the angriest, most bitter people in the world, and their posts were all about all the things and people they hated in their real life. I get venting, but I couldn't live with that level of negativity.

They also wrote a long fic that I liked a lot, stopped for a long time partway through, then finally finished it years later - with an ending that I hate, which confused and blindsided me for coming out of nowhere.

Ugh.

Well, I'm gay and hate the usage of the word fag. There, now you can't say "but a gay guy said it was okay and he speaks for all gay guys!".

Wait, wasn't there one that basically said that???

Wow okay you have exceeded my expectations in assholery. I was mostly replying out of curiosity o.o

I have a tip for you. A lot of the time being welcome to input and sharing your ideas with other people and listening to theirs can actually help build your own headcanons. Theirs may focus on other characters but the intersections may give you ideas you may not have thought about before. Stay away from the people will the silly headcanons, yeah, but rejecting the people who look at things the same way as you but have different ideas is pretty stupid in my opinion? It's a joy to find people who appreciate and listen to your ideas and theirs might be interesting even if they're not related or similar to yours. It's a nice thing to have in common with someone.

I get the feeling you're not used to playing with the other kids though and that you've already made up your mind. I'll leave it there if that's the case.

Re: your first paragraph: that is a really good way to look at it! And it's probably true. I'll have to keep that in mind.

Re: your second paragraph: I...what?? o_O Let me guess, you were "out of his league" or some shit like that? Why is it all about social status based on looks...

ahahaha yeah. If a person is the kind of person who cheats WITH you, they're probably going to cheat ON you. This is true of everyone, not just women. People can be really thick.

the average guy DESERVES the super-hot girl

Ugh, this mindset that a given guy deserves a given girl, for WHATEVER reason. Just, no! No, you don't! I'm not a prize for you to win. blechhhh

Re: f!s, can you indulge me in a rant?

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-11-25 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
although the connected assumptions that follow about me kinda irk me.

Well, yeah. I mean that's kind of what it is...it's because guys assume the Internet it populated only by men, because male is the default and female is something "other". Also apparently sometimes you can assume someone is a guy from the way they talk? What?

My name on this chat room is raichu100, which I use all over the internet, and it's pretty gender-neutral. Many of the girls in places like that use really really girly handles. I hate the fact that men seem to think that if it's not a girly handle meant to advertise my gender without them having to actually to look, then I must not be a girl.

(Also, I kind of think it's basic respect to ask or look before assuming gender, but hey.)

Hah, your taste in music seems a bit like mine.

VNV would work for most fandoms, I think. I saw a Trigun vid set to Solitary that was pretty much perfect.

Ashura-ou/Taishakuten from RG Veda were briefly a couple before Ashura-ou died. There's also a one-shot where human reincarnations of them end up together (and I'm completely blanking on the title right now).

Ugh, yes. I've actually had guys tell me with complete confidence, "I know exactly what women want," sometimes even adding, "I bet I know more about women than you do."

...what?

Re: f!s, can you indulge me in a rant?

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-11-25 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure I really understand your comment?

he reason anyone might find an asshole more appealing is because confidence/aggression trumps likeability in most parts of life

Huh?

It is not a special quality in women

What's not?

Re: f!s, can you indulge me in a rant?

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-11-25 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, it sure is. I've never had sex, so I haven't had any guys give me that crap, but I get rashes down there if I shave my thighs or bikini line (which is basically the reason I stopped shaving my bikini line - I just wear shorts over my swimsuit now which works because I hardly ever go swimming - and only shave my thighs a couple times a year). Really nasty itchy red bumpy rashes that look just as bad as the hair itself. >___>

Also, my sister had shingles Down There once. And when I had scarlet fever, I had a rash on my thighs because of that.

Basically, it's slut shaming and ignorance all wrapped up into one, topped off with a wallop of entitlement and bathed in disrespect :D

Yeah, I'll be honest, "fans" like you fucking disgust me. You hate the source material. As such you aren't actually a fan. Then you have the nerve to look down on those of us who actually do like the series itself for. You know. Actually being fans. It's fine if you don't like the series, but you have no fucking business coming into a fandom you hate, pretending to be a fan, then being a douche to the actual fans. I have fandoms that I don't like, too. Some of them even have somewhat interesting premises that I could see myself working with if whatever it was that bothered me about the canon that made me not like it didn't bother me. But you know what? I don't fucking come in, write my own "~superior~" version, then sneer at the actual fans and treat them like idiots for liking the actual source material and not sucking my e-dick instead. Fans like you are the worst thing about the Hetalia fandom IMO. Yes, even over the crazed yaoi fangirls and people who are too young and stupid to know they should tread carefully on certain historical subjects.

So yeah, I've said this of "fans" like you before and I'll say it again; go write your own goddamn personified countries series if you hate the actual canon for Hetalia so much.

Re: So, F!S, which smush names do you hate/like the most?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-25 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Sterek. I am a big fan of the pairing (in certain incarnations), but the ship name... ugh. It makes me shudder. It sounds like a piece of frightening medical equipment. "These forceps are no good... pass me the sterek!"
