I'm a female democrat who doesn't think free contraceptives need to be a thing. And my support of abortion only goes so far.

Not only are you a bad democrat, you're a shitty member of the female population. Well done.

Insulting people is the best way to get them to change their minds!

Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!

These people don't change their minds, so you may as well have fun insulting them.

Diplomacy at it's finest!

Using logical point and reason to prove my argument? Bah! I can just scream at them. More efficient you see; I don't have to think and I save time.

Yeah, but I'd be an even shittier republican, what with the whole gay marriage support, advocacy of government-funded programs for the poor and elderly, stricter gun laws, taxing the rich and a whole host of things that don't align with THAT party.

So, you know, eat me if it bothers you that I'm not a left-wing cookie cutter.

Not trying to change your mind, because you're entitled to your opinion, but if contraceptives were free, readily available, etc, wouldn't the need for abortion go waaaaaaay down, thus saving you from having to support it at all?

Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
That's true, but I still don't think expecting other people to contribute to your sex habit is right (general you, not you specifically). I don't go to the fair expecting people to pay for my rides, why should I expect them to pay for them in the bedroom?

SA -- also, having birth control doesn't mean it's always used, used properly and is 100 percent effective. Also, the frequency of elective abortions don't really have much bearing on my stance on elective abortions.

So, you're also not okay with insurance and Medicare paying for Viagra, right? Because, right now, they do (well, not all health insurance, but many of them).

Going on rides won't get you pregnant...

I mean. You wouldn't be paying for them to have sexyfuntimes, you're paying for them to be safe and healthy. And not get pregnant, therefore not having to consider the abortion you wouldn't want them to have.

Birth control helps with medical issues, too. It's not just so that you can have a lot of sex.

If I have to pay for some dude's Viagra (used solely for sex), why shouldn't he pay for my birth control (often used for reasons besides preventing pregnancy)?

As a non-US anon, I simply can't understand why 'provided by insurance' gets equated with 'directly funded by other people' in these debates. It makes no sense to me. Everyone pays into the insurance, everyone gets different things back out of it. Why should anyone get to dictate what others should and should not be allowed to get out of their insurance? That's not how insurance works!

Because paying for condoms and pills is a lot cheaper than paying to take care of surgical procedures (that you "only support so much" -- I'm not even sure what that means) or unwanted children foisted on the state?

Because we live in a society where we do, in fact, serve each other through our taxes? Where paying for things is sometimes in our best interests?

Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Th' reason for supporting an idea is not always moral agreement, but its effect on society. If society could reasonably expect to benefit from your fairground rides, it would be a good point of policy to pay for them, whether th' abstract principles of right demanded it or not. It's a sound investment of taxpayer dollars.

"Sex habit"? Way to be condescending. Birth control is preventive health care and is effective for a number of conditions, including unwanted fertility.

Moreover, I don't know why you think anyone is expecting you to pay for anyone's contraception; insurance companies or government health care programs are usually the ones covering prescriptions, and much less expensively than prenatal care would be. Would you rather "cover" prenatal and pediatric health care for the people you would deny accessible birth control?

Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Except many people get birth control for valid medical reasons that have nothing to do with sex habits.

You're the type of person who thinks everyone on birth control is a slut aren't you?

And my support of abortion only goes so far.

Translation: I'm pro-choice, but I reserve the right to judge and shame slutty pigs who use abortion as birth control because they can't keep their skanky legs closed.

That is an interesting amount of insight you have.

Would you please share your ability to from a single post accurately extrapolate the full intentions and beliefs from a single sentence.

It may be that she refuses to support abortion in the third trimester (with the exception of saving the mother's life), for example.

Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!

It really does seem to me that, at the moment, abortion really is the fundamental dividing issue of American politics - the one issue on which division is most intractable. People who are against abortion believe it is murder, and think any attempt to make it legal is a great evil; people who are for abortion think that it's a fundamental right of control over one's body, and that any attempt to get rid of it is terribly oppressive. They just fundamentally disagree, no real compromise is possible ("If you give away part of your fundamental self-sovereignty, we'll allow you to legalize a bit of murder!".

Even on issues like taxes and gun control and immigration where division is polarized and profound, there's still more possibility for compromise - there's a lot of people who care deeply about the issue who still accept that some people can disagree and not be evil, and there are shades of grey, where one person might agree in different degree. You can be against taxes but only up to a certain level X; you can be against immigration but not be xenophobic or opposed to certain kinds of reform. In abortion, it's just not possible - you're for it or against it. And this is only exacerbated by the state of abortion politics in this country - the only real way to affect the abortion debate is through the presidential election and putting justices who agree with you on the Supreme Court - this means that everything comes down to the Presidential Election, and the Presidential Election is a simple choice between a YES (murderer who hates babies) and a NO (vagina-hating man who wants to get rid of fundamental liberties).

So in other words - in this country, the most important political division is on abortion. It really drives a lot of fundamentalism in politics in a way that I'm not at all comfortable with - it leads to a lot of fanaticism and partisanship and rancor on both sides. and I think that's really unfortunate, and I don't see any solution to this problem. It's just an intractable issue that is pretty much going to remain a central issue in American politics for the foreeseeable future.

Very true. And you can see an example of the acrimony in the very first reply to this thread.

What other ways might abortion be viewed, then? I'm genuinely interested in knowing what legitimate non-"fanatical" positions on abortion you perceive to exist.
