I'm waiting for the Hobbit fanfiction to fill this void. A variety of males of varying ages and sexiness? Let the slash be written and the internet filled with porn.

It definitely makes for an interesting dynamic. It makes me sad that the age difference tends to get overlooked and goes unexplored in a lot of fic that I've seen for those pairings, though. Well, at least the ones that I read fic for.

Because that's generally because the older half of the pair is in some way immortal/not of general aging practice. Which means that it's inevitably sad when you think about it too much, since they're going to outlive the other half by a long time.

I love how everyone there, except on Supernatural, only has a few hundred years age difference. Then you go to Cas and Dean and you have a few BILLION years age difference. How do you even write that?

it probably helps that those actors are all attractive and not particularly old looking

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I have two words for you.

Jack. Ianto.

Of course, you've also got any story with immortal characters or near-immortal characters. Someone else mentioned hobbits in LotR, but what about elves?

I only really like age gap pairings when the difference is acknowledged and explored, so I can get behind this secret. I like it when it's obvious, too, though.
rivia: (Default)

[personal profile] rivia 2012-12-21 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's not dealt with much because it's not exactly something any writers would have any experience with, being hundreds or thousands of years old. I would think if it were going to be one of the main themes of the story it might be difficult to get in that headspace, I mean I can't even fathom that, myself.

Maybe because the people who really are into age differences often end up shipping pairings with a more obvious age difference? While pairings like this also attract people who usually find it ~gross~ to ship a young character with someone who looks like they're 20+ years older, so they try to ignore the age difference rather than explore it.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I keep telling myself I don't have a kink for age gaps but both of my two favorite pairings have a divide of just a little less than 20 years. Whether or not it's a kink for me, it really pisses me off when people call 'gross' on shipping two adults of different ages. It's definitely a difference between people but that just creates an avenue for chemistry. Anyone saying that people of different cultures, say, shouldn't be dating would get shouted down fast, but that's a major component of what the age gap is; a culture difference. Also lol lol 'older people aren't sexy/ARE GROSS', ageism is an amazingly tolerated form of bigotry. (Nothing wrong with saying you prefer young-looking people - I'm just side-eyeing anyone who calls older bodies 'gross', and looking forward to when said people have one themselves and get to bask in self-loathing all day.)

I don't know any of your ships but I completely agree with you about the immaturity thing; if one or both partners didn't grow up 'right', it seems easier to find the common ground. Um, maybe that is because I find slightly 'damaged' people (particularly those who had weird childhoods) more interesting anyway on account of being one of them myself.

Apparent/actual age fuckery fascinates me in a character when it's actually explored in depth, but I've never really connected it to shipping. I suppose it gives the couple an excuse for dramatic miscommunication and stuff that doesn't make one or both of them look like idiots or jerks, though.

I don't particularly have a THING for age gaps like that, buuuuut I do like a few of those ships a whole lot, so clearly I am cool with em. :D

Man, I might've been more interested in Ten/Rose if canon had MEANINGFULLY ADDRESSED THE AGE GAP (and species gap and power differential) in any way beyond "wah, one of us is gonna outlive the other." With bonus undertones of "wah, I'm gonna have to watch you grow old and unattractive," met by an answering "so you know how this was kind of weird and UST-y and almost-platonic when you were Christopher Eccleston? Nope, screw it, you're a pretty boy who looks about my age now, time for the bedroom eyes."

Not that those are insurmountable issues or anything, it's just... something uncomfortable they should've had to face. And it DID get brought up obliquely in The Lazarus Experiment, but more in the interests of shitting on Martha's crush on Ten.

Ah, and that is one reason why I love CC/Lelouch from Code Geass. He's seventeen/eighteen, and she has the body of a 16/17 year old, but she's really hundreds of years old.

The fics...really vary in quality in how they portray the relationship. Some bring up the age difference like showing that C.C. has more experience or even that she was getting it one with Lelouch's mom. ;D And then they might have her bring up historical knowledge, and that's always really fun.

...And then there are way too many fanfics that portray her as a tsundere blushing virgin even though she's hundreds of years old and most definitely not a virgin. :/

I'm seeing a distinct lack of Highlander in your secret, anon. Check the first movie and the tv show out, you'll love them!

(Personally, I'm all up for age-differences so long as it's not creepy. Like, the characters treat each other as equals in everything besides the "oh, right, you know obscure information about X because you were there" stuff.)

Stopped for Ten/Rose then spotted Sam/Baal. Rare pair like woah! So glad to know I'm not the only one who ships them.

ok, where are ed and bells?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-21 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
most of the time it involves a teenager.

people get weirded out by 'underage' sex (unless they were the underage person in the sexual relationship, then it wasn't so bad but once they became adults, all of a sudden now it's squicky) and usually the age gap like that involves a teen.

Anon, I ship Aragorn/Arwen, in which Aragorn's foster father is Arwen's biological father and they are first cousins fifty-odd times removed. There's also a giant part in the movie in which Elrond stays that her life is basically going to be short and happy with Aragorn and then he will die and she'll have to wander the world alone because immortal.

My other ship is Aragorn/Boromir. Aragorn is twice Boromir's age, worked for Boromir's grandfather, and knew his parents as contemporaries. The actors who played them are six months different in ages. The 'prime of life' for the line of Stewards is half of that of the Dunedain - Aragorn approaches his prime at 90 and Boromir is 40. Even if Boromir lives, there's going to be a shitload of ageing angst.

I completely understand and I write this all the time.
