I don't know where everyone is getting the idea that all dwarves need to look the same. Humans have wildly different body types and appearances, I don't see why dwarves can't.

Because they don't?

All we really have set in stone for dwarves is a general height range and that they have beards. We get a solid amount of variation in hobbits despite having a locked in height range for them, and a locked in physical trait in their feet. Dwarves looking somewhat different is understandable, so long as we don't have a dwarf as tall as Gandalf or a completely clean-shaven dwarf (which Kili isn't).

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, all we really get by way of physical description for dwarves is "short, stout, bearded," and... that's not exactly a detailed description, there's a lot of different things you can do and still fit all three of those criteria.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
And Aidan Turner fits none of those, except for short but even then he only *looks* short when in proportion to someone else who's tall. Elsewise he looks like a normal human with pointed ears.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Kili's not that much taller than Fili, and he looks a lot stockier in the actual movie than he does in the promotional images. Heck, even in the particular promotional image used in the secret, when put with the other ones in the same set, his body type doesn't stand out that much, no more than Fili's, Bofur's or Dwalin's, anyway.

The only thing making him stand out in that picture, to me at least, is he's the only one whose hair is being blown around.
Also, a close-trimmed beard is still a beard.

Exactly, and Kili looks fine there to me. It makes sense for the youngest dwarf to not quite have a full beard if any of them would so that's not a big deal, and he's in proportion with the other dwarves, so who really cares?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Says who? That one tiny description by Tolkien? That was so we would have an idea of what the race looks like in general.

I think Tolkien just assumed that his readers would be smart enough to understand that obviously not every single dwarf is going to look like the norm for his or her species. His mistake, clearly.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure when Tolkien wrote the dwarfs he didn't intend for them to look like Aidan Turner.

I mean if they want to sex up the dwarfs, then good for them. Whatever sells tickets. But don't pretend that because Tolkien never described dwarfs as being prettyboys that means it's a valid interpretation.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure when Tolkien wrote the dwarfs he didn't intend for them to look like Aidan Turner.

Why? Provide evidence.

But don't pretend that because Tolkien never described dwarfs as being prettyboys that means it's a valid interpretation.

Why can't a short, stout, bearded man be "pretty?"

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Why? Provide evidence.

For starters, Kili was described as being blonde and with a beard in the Hobbit. So there's not a lot of interpretation with him being brunette and stubbly if your justification is that Kili could have been as such in the actual text.

By your logic, there's no reason why elves couldn't look like Danny DeVito.

Why can't a short, stout, bearded man be "pretty?"

Aidan Turner's Kili is neither stout nor bearded.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
For starters, Kili was described as being blonde and with a beard in the Hobbit.

Blonde is a problem. Having a beard is not (unless you have some sort of minimal length requirement for a man having a beard, which would be silly).

By your logic, there's no reason why elves couldn't look like Danny DeVito.

LOL what? Elves are not described as being short. Therefore, Danny DeVito could not be an elf.

Aidan Turner's Kili is neither stout nor bearded.

He has a beard, and he is stout.

I'm guessing that you take "stout" to mean "broad" or "fat," so let's look at the complete definition of stout:

stout [stout] Show IPA adjective, stout·er, stout·est, noun.
adjective
1.
bulky in figure; heavily built; corpulent; thickset; fat: She is getting too stout for her dresses. Synonyms: big, rotund, stocky, portly, fleshy. Antonyms: thin, lean, slender, slim; skinny, scrawny.
2.
bold, brave, or dauntless: a stout heart; stout fellows. Synonyms: valiant, gallant, intrepid, fearless, indomitable, courageous, stouthearted. Antonyms: cowardly, timid, fearful, timorous, craven.
3.
firm; stubborn; resolute: stout resistance. Synonyms: obstinate, indomitable, steadfast, staunch, unwavering.
4.
forceful; vigorous: a stout argument; a stout wind. Synonyms: intense, sharp, violent.
5.
strong of body; hearty; sturdy: Synonyms: brawny, sinewy, strapping, husky, robust.

Notice how only one of those bullets describes a person's figure.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
(unless you have some sort of minimal length requirement for a man having a beard, which would be silly

A man? No.

A dwarf? Yes. Since Tolkien dwarves are described as having beards from the beginning of their lives and they take pride in their length to the point that a dwarf will only be shaved if they are shamed.

Notice how only one of those bullets describes a person's figure.

Yes, which is why when "stout" is used to refer to a dwarf's physical appearance, they aren't referring to their personality.

nayrt
Oh my god why do you care so much about this. Did Aidan Turner murder your dog and force you to watch or something?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
No, that was Ian McKellen.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Gosh! I can see that this is really, really important to you! I'm sorry. I didn't realize that you were actually taking this seriously.

I wish that I could live a life such as yours, one so blissfully free of anything worth caring about that I could be upset about an actor not matching the description of a character in a children's book.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, I figured someone would pull that out when they no longer had any valid arguments left even though they're posting in the same argument on a site called FandomSecrets.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
...You do realize that they're not gonna remake the movies no matter how much you argue that one of the 13 dwarves doesn't look dwarven enough to you, right?

And...what? That means that not a single dwarf has ever gone against that, in the entire history of there being dwarves?

Yes, which is why when "stout" is used to refer to a dwarf's physical appearance, they aren't referring to their personality.

It is not necessarily referring to physical appearance.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I love you and your reasoning! ♥

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Provide evidence that Steve Buscemi couldn't play Frodo.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
There is none. He could.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Right. And Steve Buscemi makes as much sense for Frodo as Aidan Turner does for a Tolkien dwarf.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
If by that you mean "it makes perfect sense" because Tolkien is vague and, given that he's no longer alive, there's no longer a valid interpretation.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh sorry, I didn't know you were the authority on what is and is not "valid interpretation" of Tolkien's work.
