I was headscratching at Gandalf myself at first, even though in retrospect it wasn't that big a change. NEW HEADCANON! Wizards age in reverse!

I'm not sure what you're saying here? Is your complaint that the now 90 year old actor doesn't look like he did before?

Um...because he was? Wizards have some sort of color rank as far as I can tell. Saruman was called The White at the beginning of the LOTR series, and Gandalf started out as the Grey, but leveled up.

I do not understand this secret... :\

My issue was that his character wasn't anything even similar to who Sauruman the White was supposed to be. He was more like Sauruman of Many Colours only more of a douchebag. Sauruman the White is supposed to be good, and yet he was apparently so untrustworthy that Gandalf was hiding things from him.

....Really? I didn't get the impression that Gandalf was hiding the sword for him, just waiting for the right moment, and the worst thing Saruman did was complain about Radaghast (which I think he does in one of the books anyway?) He wasn't being obviously evil like in LOTR.

I'm pretty sure this is as a result of the Hobbit being made after the LOtR, and them wanting to keep the character consistent. Probably the ring will be treated as something potentially significant later on too,despite the fact that at this point it was only recognised as a minor magical ring of invisibility.

Saruman the White, played by Christopher Lee, same as in the Lord of the Rings. Yep, back in The Hobbit he was still a good guy.

I'm wondering if people are getting screwed up because the Hobbit came out after the Lord of the Rings. I mean, we all know Saruman turns evil, so we automatically construe his actions in the Hobbit as blatant foreshadowing to his turning, when in actuality, he'd been turning for decades before LotR, and it's not all that blatant. IMO he just seemed typical bossman, writing off Radaghast as crazy and not taking the threats seriously, because he 'knows better'. It didn't strike me as particularly evil, just egotistical.

You didn't watch LotR, did you?

Long story short: There were five Wizards (or Istari - basically Maiar (demi-gods, angels, whatever) in the form of Men come to help fight the Dark Lord in Middle-earth) - two Blue who went off to distant lands and were never seen again, Radagast the Brown who got on with birds and animals, Gandalf the Grey who did his best to learn about all races, and Sauruman the White who was their leader and had a very hypnotic voice.

Saurman got too big for his britches and got ambitious and eventually got his place as "The White" replaced by Gandalf after Gandalf's near-Mandos experience.

(Mandos is the Valar (higher demi-god, archangel, whatever) of death. His given name is Námo and Mandos is an epithet that is also the name of his house.)

TL;DR Watch LotR, preferably the extended edition. You'll see Saruman there. Also, Christopher Lee rocked that role.

try using wikipedia at some point before watching a movie or after idek
