Movies that you love that most people didn’t notice

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Not one that a lot of people hated, but the one where you tell someone you loved it and they say they've never heard of it.

Like Playing By Heart (Sean Connery, Gena Rowlands, Jon Stewart, Gillian Anderson, Angelina Jolie, Ryan Phillippe, and more) or The Very Thought of You (Monica Potter, Joseph Fiennes) or The Thing Called Love (River Phoenix, Samantha Mathis, Dermot Mulroney, and Sandra Bullock).

OH MY GOD I LOVE PLAYING BY HEART. And yeah, that is definitely one most people haven't heard of, lol.

I'm not sure if these qualify, either, but I love Dummy, Blue Spring (Aoi Haru), and Muriel's Wedding, and I've gotten the "never heard of it" reaction from people when mentioning them before. Could have just been the people I talked to, though.

Breakfast on Pluto (Neil Jordan)
Bloody Sunday (Paul Greengrass)
The Magdalene Sisters (Peter Mullan)

I also love the Disney version Robin Hood... It's fairly well-known, but sometimes I feel it's cast aside from the other big titles and it deserves more love!

Ladyhawke. It's old enough that most people go Whut? when I mention it.

I have so many movies like that. But I have no one but myself to blame because I am always searching out for missed screen gems.

So, if you've seen these, yell! I want to hug you.

Midnight Son - (A low-key vampire flick.)
The Salton Sea - (Has some of my favorite dialog off all time. "Excuse me. I don't mean to impose, but I am the Ocean.")
Welcome to Dongmakgol - (Oh, look, it's like a live action Studio Ghibli film set during The Korean War.)
Boy Wonder - (Not!Robin has some serious issues.)
Burke and Hare - (A grave robbing-murder comedy!)
ext_81845: the musician lawrence superimposed over a dark cloudy background, my default icon from lij (the world is as soft as lace.)

Rob Roy

Barry Lyndon (it's a Stanley Kubrick movie but a lot of people haven't heard of it)

Liquid Sky (sort of a good bad movie but still I loved it)

All of the Antoine Doinel movies that aren't The 400 Blows, all of those movies are my absolute favorite but most people have only seen the first one (Les Quatres Cents Coup is famous for a reason though)

Eastern Promises (Viggo Mortensen as a Russian gangster and it's David Cronenberg geez people come on)

Ravenous (Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle and CANNIBALISM and it's loosely based on the Donner Party incident and it's funny)

I'm sure I can think of some more later

I recently mentioned my love for Without A Clue to a roomful of friends and was met with blank stares.

I can't work out if that deserves to be in this thread, or if I need different friends ;-)

Death to Smoochy
Stage Beauty (This movie isn't super spectacular, but I love the chemistry between Billy Crudup and Claire Danes. Also, cross dressing ftw. And the scene where he's demonstrating to her how two guys have sex is hot as hell.)
Strictly Ballroom

wouldn't every indie or "foreign" flick qualify, even most of the acclaimed ones?

unless you hang out with a particular sort of crowd, how many ppl in your life has heard of, idk, la pianiste or raise the red lantern?

Velvet Goldmine. One of my favorite movies ever, and most people have never heard of it.

Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow.

It's bad, but to me, it's good!

Beautiful Thing. That film made my adolescence. I did an assignment on it, I bought my then-SO peppermint foot lotion because of it, yet no one seems to know of it.
fearlessfirefly: The Sixth Doctor all dirtied up and holding up his hands to his face. ([Dr Who] I ♥ real dirty things)

I really like Happy Accidents, a time travel romance featuring Vincent D'Onofrio and Marisa Tomei. Also, Kate & Leopold with Hugh Jackman and Meg Ryan (another time travel romance!). There's also the anime film Whisper of the Heart, a lesser-known Hayao Miyazaki work, especially compared to Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle.

The Trial -- Anthony Perkins and Orson Welles. That it's from 50 fucking years ago might have something to do with it though.

Cemetary Man

[personal profile] lunabee34 2012-12-31 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
So darkly funny, and then it takes this weird existential twist. Plus, Rupert Everett.

Curdled (a woman obsessed with murder who gets entangled with a serial killer after taking a job with a crime scene cleaning service)

The Imposters (the Stanley Tuuchi one - a comedy about two poor actors who get in increasingly hilarious and ridiculous situations after accidentally stowing away on a luxury liner)

Rubber (an old tire comes to life, discovers it has telekinetic powers and goes on a killing spree)

Apocalypto (an action-adventure following a man's struggle to get back to his family after he was taken to be a slave after his village was raided; dialogue entirely in ancient Mayan with English subtitles)

Equilibrium (very cool dystopia where emotion is illegal staring Christian Bale)

Sphere. It's a weird sci-fi flick based on a book. Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, Samuel L. Motherfuckin Jackson.

EDIT: Oh, and Dead Poet's Society. One of Robin Williams's best, I think.

Plunkett and Macleane - Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller and Liv Tyler. So damn awesome. And Alan Cumming as a totally fey Lord Rochester, omg. Luff.

The Replacement Killers staring Chow Yun Fat and Mira Sorvino. Good action, decent plot. NO ROMANCE.

Kiss of the Dragon with Jet Li and Bridget Fonda. Ditto with the action and plot thing.

The Last Boy Scout with Bruce Willis and Damon Wayons. Oh, the one-liners.

Hawk the Slayer. I can't even remember who was in this one, but I adored it. I really thought Crow the elf was spectacular.

Big Trouble in Little China. Kurt Russell channeling John Wayne in a martial arts movie. There is absolutely nothing to not love in this movie. Magic, martial arts, demons....

My Own Private Idaho. Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix as street hustlers. Do I need to say anything more?

Archie and Mehitabel. Animated series (Don Blume's studios, I think, did the animation), based on the novel of the same name, about a cockroach and a cat. Dark comedy.

Spirited Away. When I tell people (except for people who are really into anime) that it's my favorite movie, they always say "Ohhh! Isn't that the one about a horse?"

Turner & Hooch (1989) -- Tom Hanks is a detective caring for a dead man's ridiculously drooly, bad-behaved dog that witnessed his murder. Also they fight crime. I still look at my cat and say "This is not your room," when he wanders into the bathroom.

Frequency (2000) -- Jim Caviezel talks to his dead dad (Dennis Quaid) 30 years in the past via a CB radio during the aurora borealis, gives him information that saves his life and then things go to hell.

Safe Passage (1994) -- I've only seen this on VHS, but Susan Sarandon and Sam Shepherd play the parents of a brood of (mostly) adult sons played by Robert Sean Leanard, Sean Astin, Jason (or Jeremy?) London, some twins who haven't done anything since 1999, and Nick Stahl who are all gathered at home waiting for information when news breaks of an explosion at the military base where their other black-sheep son (Matt Keeslar) was stationed.

My Best Friend is a Vampire (1987) - Robert Sean Leonard becomes a vampire. Rene Auborjonois teaches him how to be a better vampire. David Warner tries to kill them. In the 80s.

The Gods Must Be Crazy, The Rescuers Down Under and, more recently, Rock of Ages, to name three. I know I have a few other oft-overlooked favorites, but it's half past one in the morning and my Ambien is kicking in, so fuck if I can remember any of 'em.

Wait, I guess I could add like, 2/3rds of the horse-themed movies ever made to the list, 'cause some childhood obsessions never go away, after all.
fickletastictot: Finn the Human nodding (mhmm~ yuh!)

Bright Star - Beautifully shot movie.
Master and Commander The Far Side of the World - No one shares my joy over the badass naval battles in this movie *sobs*
Sweet Charity - So many great dancing and musical sequences!

Mostly the last one. I'm surprised not a lot of people I know irl were aware of it. :(

Repo Man (Emilio Estevez, Harry Dean Stanton) (not Repo Men or Repo! The Genetic Opera). Others, too - Buckaroo Bonzai (very devoted but very small fanbase), I'll Believe You (really charming little movie), They Live - but mostly Repo Man.
omorka: (Wizard of Speed and Time)

Re: Movies that you love that most people didn’t notice

[personal profile] omorka 2012-12-31 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
Since The Impostors and Buckaroo Banzai have already been mentioned, let me just add:

The Wizard of Speed And Time - Independent project by master animator Mike Jittlov from the very, very early '80s. The story turned fractal on him - it's about him being (almost) screwed out of his big break by a producer, and then the film's producer went wonky on him in RL.

Sneakers - A film about computer security and its discontents from the early '90s. Still frighteningly relevant. Also has Dan Aykroyd spewing conspiracy theories like a boss.
