It's a great game! I'm almost done my first play through. Also I love Anise and don't think she dervese all the hate.

I love the whole main cast of ToA <3 Their dialogue together gives me so many warm and gushy feelings.

To be fair to Anise, she had a reason for doing so. SPOILERs!


Her parents had no money and tons of debt. The only way she could help them out was to marry a rich man (Which is why she flirts with Luke/The king) Who she really loved was a clone of a dead boy around her age named Ion.

she doesn't act even more underage, though. she acts like a typical 13-year-old girl. she's childish sometimes and more mature at other times.

Tales: if you dislike JRPG tropes, you're gonna have a bad time.

Seriously, it's like the same 10 character archetypes, subbing in 1 or 2 others each game.

I think Luke is my favorite JRPG character, despite the cliches. I really loved how he grows as a person and I think it's the best character development out of all the other Tales MCs.

Asch on the other hand I can't stand :X

The characters in Tales games really aren't any more or less cliche than most JRPGs, though.

I feel like the people who say that just haven't played very many JRPGs in the grand scheme of things, tbh.

Honestly all of the Tales Of "little kid" characters drive me up the wall. Genis, Anise, Karol... I usually just shaft 'em in terms of equipment/etc and leave well enough alone.

Then again I don't really play Tales Of for mind-bendingly good characters/plot so idk. I actually love Anise's monster dude though, which makes me wish I liked her character.

I think they actually put the kid characters in for actual little kids to feel included when they play the games? Like one of the only titles to do that in the moe-wave. But maybe it's a misread.

But...but that's wrong! Anise has perfectly sound reasons for playing up her "innocent flirting" like she does, and she actually has one of the more interesting stories/character arcs in the whole game.

Also she is a tank and her fighting style is fantastic and kills everything.

You're allowed to not like the character but I feel you seriously didn't finish the game. Her behavior is explained and she has growth over time. There is a character arc. You seriously must not have been paying attention. I never remember her acting like she's six either.

Hate her for how she battles is the only thing I can understand, but then again, I thought there were more characters than just her who were not that great to battle with.

Maybe you can hate her for the reasons everyone else does? Because they just say they find her really annoying. But I guess... if you really don't like her you don't need a reason. It's not really necessary.

I'm not even gonna touch the Anise hate and I'll just say that I thought fighting with Tokunaga was damn awesome! In fact, I thought that was the only fighting style that was interesting in Abyss. Though the other characters had bland fighting styles to match their own bland personalities

BTW I agree with you that her flirting with old dudes was totally nasty and dnw

My biggest pet peeve regarding her character is that she was so easily forgiven for her betrayal, especially since they held Luke's (accidental) fuck-up over his head for a long time. And Anise had the nerve to chew him out for it, while knowing that she was betraying them the whole time (I think? It's been years since I played this game and JRPG's tend to blur over time in my head).

NGL, that's one of the things I like least about anime and manga -- the assertion that very childlike innocence is sexy. It hits my shota/loli squick something fierce.

It wouldn't bother me so much if it were treated as some kind of fetish or kink, but it's not. It's treated like it's completely normal and wholesome! And it's everywhere. All the protagonists are aged down to the point of absurdity then foisted into roles where they are treated like adults. Even in the most innocent of manga and anime it's hard to find a protagonist who doesn't look and act like a preteen. And even when they are adults, they are still drawn and behave as though they are little kids. It's like it's just accepted that 10 year olds are ripe for fucking and fighting -- which, wtf, no!

One of the reasons I switched to western fandoms is that even when the characters are supposedly kids, they look like adults (because the actors usually are).

I've always been a huge fan of the Tales series but yeah I agree with some of the above comments. In fact the games trope each other with the amount of copied plots and twists they have!

They do explain why Anise is such a gold digger, but I can't say I like her much either.

I can't stand Anise either, not even post development. which is sad because i freaking love the rest of the Abyss cast v_v (well... except for asch. but i dont really hate him, just not like him as much as the rest lol)

but eeehh, she's not Moe. At least i don't think she is supposed to fit into that stereotype. idk how to express it, but she just isn't.
