'white privilege' - i am so sick of reading that shit, fuck you! come live my life and tell me how privileged you feel

(sorry that it actually has nothing to do with the secret or Nick Fury. I just woke up grumpy)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure it feels great.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
yep, it does. all those things you think go on in other people's lives to make yours seem shit ARE ALL REAL

Yes you special minority snowflake you. You have it the worst! Let no oppressor tell you different!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
oh man

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
if you are living in a white-majority country, then yes. you've got white privilege. deal with it.

maybe you're not privileged in other areas. maybe your life really is difficult. but don't say your life is difficult because you're white.

if you're not living in a white-majority country, that's different and i apologise. but i'm tired of seeing white people complain that white privilege doesn't exist just because they're marginalised in other areas.

Rejection of the term 'white privilege' does not imply that someone's life is difficult because they are white, but the term does in fact imply that others' lives are great because they are white. This is a false understanding of humanity that will never do anyone any good, and will only serve to perpetuate hate and cultural divide.

/2 cents

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
whoops. i think i misunderstood OP's comment.

however, i think "white privilege" is a very misunderstood concept. in its original form, it doesn't mean that someone's life is "great because they are white". that's what SJWs have twisted it into. truly, it just means that you don't face marginalisation in society** because of your white race.

**i'm only speaking about white-majority countries here

I'm tired of people talking about privilege instead of combating racism. Privilege is real but the sort of thing you talk about on a meta, academic level. You should then use the results of these discussions to actually fight the bigotry around you. Instead all people do is Discuss Privilege which only serves to make those privileged enough to have enough education to discuss privilege feel better about themselves. "I acknowledged my privilege, thus I'm on the good team. Oh look a black person better clutch my macbook closer."

I'm also tired of the phrase "deal with it."

AYRT

sorry. "deal with it" was a bit harsh. i guess i just got a little annoyed because i see people denying the existence of white privilege a lot.

i do use the idea of privilege to combat bigotry in real life. i do use it to make people irl think more about their actions and mindsets and hopefully change those ideas.

for this reason, i think it sometimes is useful to discuss privilege. people need to understand the privilege they have in order not to abuse it or forget the needs of others who don't have it.

I'm goddam tired of all the white guilt, and white self flagellation.

I'm black, and don't hate white people, no matter how much SJWs want me to. The whole 'privledge' argument online is just a word used to shame, not to open any kind of meaningful discussion.

It's a fucking buzzwrd now.

If you live in a country where 99% of the population is white, white privilege stops having any meaning, right? Because how can it be privilege what everyone enjoys?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
"White privilege" doesn't mean "life is easy." It means "life is easier than it would be without that privilege."

http://whatever.scalzi.com/2012/05/15/straight-white-male-the-lowest-difficulty-setting-there-is/
In the role playing game known as The Real World, “Straight White Male” is the lowest difficulty setting there is.

This means that the default behaviors for almost all the non-player characters in the game are easier on you than they would be otherwise. The default barriers for completions of quests are lower. Your leveling-up thresholds come more quickly. You automatically gain entry to some parts of the map that others have to work for. The game is easier to play, automatically, and when you need help, by default it’s easier to get.
Doesn't mean you can't lose. Doesn't mean you can't struggle, can't die. Just means the whole damn game is a little (sometimes a lot) easier than it is for people working with other arrangements.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
this is an amazing metaphor! thank you for sharing it. it's going to make explaining this kind of thing to clueless people much easier.

That article, and the whole privilege argument always sounds like it ignores the individual experience, even when it doesn't (and in this instance it does).

No white man with testicular cancer wants to hear how great he has it.

NA

That article, and the whole privilege argument always sounds like it ignores the individual experience, even when it doesn't (and in this instance it does).

Except it doesn't. Even if you missed the paragraphs about the skill points, it's still all in this one sentence: "You can lose playing on the lowest difficulty setting."

This is a great analogy, but it's still a terrible article because it's perpetuating this idea that seems to be common in much of the social justice world that sexuality, race, and gender are the only real oppressions, or the only ones that matter. A straight white man might be the most privileged person on Earth, or he might be poor, fat, non-conventionally attractive, physically disabled, autistic, mentally ill, and a lot of other things. Things that matter too.

How about this.

How about we stop beating white people over the heads with a guilt trip and start actually working towards improving cultural, and race relations.

Oh that's right white guilt, is easier...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Look, I found an angry white person who has no fucking concept of what "white privilege" actually means!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
i would give you a medal for finding one, except sadly they are so common that it's not really an accomplishment. if only that would change.

I'm black, and I'm goddamn sick of all this 'White Privileged' shit.

The people who sling that word at other white people, are the same folks who tell me I'm not 'black enough' for them, because I dare not to think like a hive mind.

Screw that! I'm not helpless, and having white people hate themselves isn't going to make me feel any better, in fact it makes me feel worse.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but do you think you'd be better off if your situation was exactly the same in every respect except for your skin color? For some people, that's all white privilege is; it's not that they lead amazing fun lives, it's that their lives would probably suck a bit more if they weren't white. This is true of most sorts of privilege-being able-bodied, or male, or whatever. It doesn't always make someone's life better, it just prevents that life from sucking just a little bit more.
