fanfic clichés you hate

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any plots or narrative elements that keep showing up over and over and over in your fandom's fic, and you absolutely cannot stand them?

If I never see another "sudden unexplained Pon Farr in a cave that causes Spock to realize his repressed feelings for [insert other character here (usually Kirk)]" it will be too soon. Goddamnit fandom, that plot started getting stale DECADES AGO.

Loki and Thor batting their eyelashes at each other and swearing sweet love things for each other forever and ever until the end of time/Ragnarok/whatever.

Thor may be all "BROTHER I LOVE YOU" but he's not a 16-year-old lovestruck fool and Loki may be "so it seems I do have feelings for you after all, oaf" but swooning and crooning his love? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Inuyasha fandom. Kagome runs to and falls for Sesshoumaru because Inuyasha is a dick to her. She's always the wilted flower. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Sess/Kag fics. They're all the same plot now. A few years back I got so sick of it that I wrote my own Sess/Kag fic where Sesshoumaru was the one in a vulnerable position. It got popular. lol Still proud of it today. Guess I wasn't the only one sick of the same old, same old. }8^P>

Pretty much any fic involving Cas and Dean's apparent bond in Supernatural. It got boring, fast.

Also, more with art than fic, to be honest, but the whole 'give Sam or Dean wings'. Just, ugh. There are creatures already in canon with wings! The human characters don't need them! They're already awesome!

And whilst on the subject: All-human AUs. I just... do not understand them. Non-human characters are great partially because they aren't human.

To each their own, of course, but I see it so much it really does get irritating.

I have been raging against samey, boring, X Didn't Die fix-it fics in my fandom since 2003 and they are still everywhere. For the longest time it made me think I just flat-out hated Character X, but a few good fics posted in the last couple of years made me finally realise that he's a pretty interesting guy and what I hate are all the schmoopy fans who are still butthurt about him dying.

XMFC fandom. Alpha/Beta/Omega/Kappa/Delta/Gamma/Phi/whatever fic. I just don't get the appeal. It just seems like non-con to me, since the people involved have no control over who they want to be with. It's handwaved as BIOLOGY!@!!1 or a SOULBOND!!!@!1, but the whole concept is just two (or more) people being coerced into sex for shits and giggles. Which, now that I think about it, seems like it's a metaphor for fandom.

Harry Potter:

-The Dursleys beating the living daylights out of Harry, as opposed to their more passive-aggressive treatment of him in canon.

-Harry is suddenly heir to Gryffindor, Slytherin, Black, Potter and has a bazillion galleons and has this awesome family ring that makes him a Lord of whatever and goes on a trip to get a super awesome trunk and kickass robes and becomes bffs with the goblins and keeps beating Dumbledore in politics.

-A mix of the point above and "harem fic".

-The Weasleys were using/manipulating/betrayed Harry. Hermione is his one-true-luv because Ginny is now out of the picture? Or something.

-Dumbledore goes a step above from his canon-scheming into outright not giving a shit and being totally remorseless about Harry -- Evil!Dumbledore.

-Voldemort suddenly being a good guy, wtf.

-Veela mates.

N Harmonia from Pokemon is absolutely clueless about human sex and reproduction. There's no reason he should be that clueless and it doesn't make him look naive and sweet, it just makes Hilda look like a creeper if she gets involved with him anyway.

(I don't know if other pairings with N have the same problem as I haven't read many.)

Transformers fandom: Starscream is a sad, depressed woobie because Megatron rapes him every night. Eventually he gets sick of it and becomes an Autobot (which is OOC in so many ways) and has his emotional trauma fixed by Skyfire's healingcock.

We're Not Gay, We Just Love Each Other

I despise those old school slash fics where the protags go on and on and on and on about how not gay they are but their love for each other is so special and transcendent that even though they're totally straight they can't help but be with each other. *gags a little*

Methinks when two dudes are sucking each other's dicks that at least a little bit of gayness is going on.

Not for any one fandom in particular, but 'It's sweet and loving when Character A treats Character B like a child and controls/micromanages their life!' That's not adorable, that's abusive.

Liking fucked up dynamics? Fine. Insisting that said fucked up dynamics are totally cute and ethical? Not so much.

Turning a canonically badass or strong character into a classic woobie uke for the sake of a ship /facepalm. It keeps happening in different fandoms, in both fic and art, and I'm sick of it.

Off the top of my head: Allen from D.Gray-man, Gokudera from Reborn!, and (of all people) Ichigo from Bleach.

Rewriting some popular movie/book/whatever with the fandom characters of choice. Usually completely OOC.

Mate fics. For plus points the word 'mate' is repeated at least twenty times in each chapter. And the characters aren't Australian.

Chronic masturbating.

Fainting over every damn thing. Does anyone know someone like this IRL (that isn't seriously ill)? I don't.

Taking any small detail from canon and beating the horse to glue with it.

And individual sentences:
-He released a breath he did not know he had been holding.

Anyone, be it a canon Trainer or an OC getting a shiny Pokémon or a Legendary into their Pokémon team without there being a damned good reason.

I also kind of feel the same about Eevee. There has to be a good backstory for me to be able to buy that a regular Trainer might have something like Eevee.

There's a pairing that's popular. I prefer it as platonic friendship, but I don't mind the shipping and I can see why it's done. The problem comes in characterization, for one half of the pairing in particular. He's always either (a) love or lust-struck over his friend to the exclusion of just about anything else, or (b) predatory seducer out to entice this naive young man, and both of those just... no.

...this kind of thing happens a lot, of course. But when this pairing dominates almost all of the fic about my favorite characters, it gets particularly irritating.

Supernatural - the ones where John is super-duper abusive dad who all but beats Dean/Sam/both kids to death and/or rapes them and/or sells them to demons or wtf ever. Come *on*.

Any fic in which Dean is 'cursed' or 'put under a spell' by a witch to 'teach him a lesson' about 'how he treats women'. (Usually meaning - a genderbent story where Dean is suddenly a woman/pregnant/highly emotional/combo/all three.)

*gags*

Unexpected pon farr in a cave has gone from cliche to fucking annoying cliche back to beloved tongue-in-cheek stock plot for me.

What I cannot stand is when a fic states that Character A did [insert canonical nice gesture] for Character B not because they were a decent human being, but because they were hot for them. And then treats this as something good.

It's doubly annoying when it's a villain doing something good that is supposed to show they're morally ambiguous and not a totally evil guy, only for the fic writer to explain that no, he's still a total psychopath, he just wants to fuck the hero/the hero's girlfriend/whatever, and this is supposed to be better than him actually being kinda good.

Bruce Banner blushing. (Most people blushing, actually, except for a select few characters, but Bruce is the one that bugs me the most.)

And general downgrading of various characters' badassery in order to woobify them. I love H/C fic as much as the next person, but the hurt person doesn't necessarily have to be helpless and weeping.

And any Teen Wolf fic that involves 'mates'.

MCU!Steve Rogers being afraid of women. I kind of hate the tendency to make Steve overly naive, but that one especially just makes me roll my eyes. He gets nervous talking to women and is kind of balls at wooing, but he's not afraid of them.

(This applies to any version of Steve, really, but I generally only see it with MCU and not 616)

My OTP: The male character is not a predatory, really rough, rapey, possessive, über-jealous type. Stop it.
The female does not cry at the drop of a hat (I don't mind crying in fics in general, but I'm pretty sure this particular character doesn't do it ALL THE TIME), giggle or talk like a schoolgirl/teenager, or get talked down to or ordered around BY HER SUBORDINATES (again, not all the time). Yeah they need to be human every once in a while but they're in their position for a reason.

M/M slash fic where one of the guys has a past wife/gf who basically just existed to have a kid and then die in an angsty way (or sometimes to turn into a raging, evil bitch).

I actually love kids fic, but this just drives me crazy, since it's generally used as an easy way to give a guy a kid but then get the mother out of the way so she doesn't get in the way of the man love, while also giving the dude some bonus easy angst.
