5- Okay, I can relate, because I used to think the same way. Last summer, a whole fuckton of my friends started collecting, and I actually looked down on them. Now I own a damn doll.

But honestly? How is that different from the person who saves up for a $5000 TV, or buys a $60 video game once a week? or the people who obsessively buy manga, or eat fast food every day? Nobody NEEDS these things, but if it's what makes you happy, it's what makes you HAPPY. Sure a doll is considered "pointless" by a lot of people - but a person who doesn't like video games would consider buying them pointless AND a waste of time. It's just any other hobby, really. Why do people collect coins, or stamps, or action figures? There's no real PURPOSE for any of it; it's just a matter of perception, I guess.

That said, YES, a lot of the fandom can be pretty elitist. There's certain cliques on DoA, and certain people who are BNFs, but then there's the super nice people too! It's just like any other fandom, really. :B

I dunno. Just don't start looking into it too much. You'll inevitably want one. Then you'll buy a doll... then you'll buy accessories obsessively... then inevitably end up wanting a Cerberus Project Woosoo... and it's a very slippery slope from there. :D

/tldr!

5. While I not so secretly want one of them to use as an artist model, I have friends who keep buying them when they cannot afford them and then complain about not being able to pay off their credit card bills. Just what the fuck, mate?

10. Unfortunately, a lot of people completely disregard anything before the Ninth and Tenth Doctor. My dad was a huge fan of Dr Who when he was a child and has recently started watching it again. I like Rose and I like the dynamic between them, however the series is far more than that relationship ... and this is coming from someone who's cosplaying Rose at Drago*Con.

17. No, I've thought about it. But my best friend is into fandom with me and has a LJ and such ... and knows my password. So if anything happened she'd take care of everything. I've already willed my laptop to her since I don't want my parents ever getting into this thing. XD

[identity profile] nodoff.livejournal.com 2007-08-27 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree - the main focus on the series is the adventures the Doctor and his companions have. Ranging from planets in different dimensions to jumping to various points in time to have a little fun with the locals! :D

11. Hideki is a total sweetheart, and I love him because he's normal. He's bishounen, too, in his own way♥

12. What anime is that?

17. You're not the only one. I think that if I died, I'd leave all of my passwords and stuff in the hands of someone I trust, so that they'd inform everyone else.

21. That must be really amusing XD

5. I think Busou Shinki Dolls (http://www.busou.konami.jp/) totally PWN Dollfies. If only they'd make male models ;_;

Not the OP, but I have to give you a WORD on the lack of sense. Apparently everyone and their dog is convinced that Edward and Bella look just like Kyo and Tohru. Not joking.

My mind, she is blown.

(Secretly, I partially blame the Japanese version (http://volturi.org/multimedia.php?scans) for this, but even that doesn't work completely as an excuse.)

1. lololol my one semester of Japanese, yeah. FIRST FIVE MINUTES I COULD TELL. god the girls drove me insane.

4. I like their sound awright, but not enough to get their other albums I guess?

5. THEY ARE VERY PRETTY, but yeah. I just can't justify spending all that money unless I'm like, disgustingly rich. Someone should give me loads of money so I can see if I'd like having one or not.

11. Ugh, I hate that series. I think Chobits was the turning point of when I started disliking Clamp.

20. Shoot, I missed wank???!!!

Oh man, that old dilemma. I feel for you.

Never admit to your instructors that you're into that stuff; you'll never be taken seriously.

Then again, I was one of those animu nerds and now I translate for a living, so I guess it can work out okay. I do look back with no small amount of chagrin on my pathetic high school/college fanboy self.

And I might as well say that re:1 the Japanese teacher at my school is I think fuming that he has to be in charge of the Japanese club which is basically full of really irritating otaku or wannabe-otaku (he can't stand the anime-screening sessions)

I'm totally with you there. Though I wouldn't mind an epic Elite Beat Agents, Phoenix Wright, and Trauma Center crossover crack anime either. (As implausible as it is.)

Imagine it! Dr. Stiles using the Elite Beat Agents to DANCE in the background to help him HEALING TOUCH his patients with more ease! ... and then needing Phoenix Wright to save their asses in court from malpractice.

I mean, I liked Rose, I really did -- but the longer I'm in fandom, the more I feel irritated by her fans, and by extension, her. (Which then I feel guilty about, because then I rewatch stuff and I'm like yeah! I like you still!) But even though I'm only just barely starting to go through the oldschool stuff, dude, I've really liked the other companions!

On the one hand, I don't doubt he loved Rose, and rather desperately -- but I don't think she's his ONE TRUE LOVE! or anything even remotely approaching that.

If you were to ask me, it'd be either TARDIS/Doctor OTP, or Doctor/Master, because, uhhh. I LIKE IT THAT WAY. 8Db

Agreed. There are so many better albums than Stunt. I love Born On A Pirate Ship and Gordon so much.

My! It's not every day you see a secret about yourself.
I'm sorry if I offended you, but it's just the impression that I got from talking to other people that have read the series, and going online to learn more. If it isn't anything like Fruits Basket, I suppose it's my fault from having friends that fangirl more than a healthy amount about the book series. They probably warp things a little.
Again, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been as rude as I was.

Not the OP, but...

1: I'm in a similar position. I love the Japanese language. I've never wanted to do anything more in my life than learn to read, write and speak it. But I never would've gotten to this point if I hadn't been influenced by anime and manga (and the desire to not have to wait for fansubs). I know I want to do more with my life by learning it besides being able to watch anime and read manga untranslated, but I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to do that as well. It's all in what inspires you, I think.

5: YES. I just do not get it. They're pretty dolls and all, and I'd love to have some of my own if I didn't have to pay a freaking arm and leg for them.

13: Am I the only one who wants a link to that AMV now?

[identity profile] pretentioustfu.livejournal.com 2007-08-28 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
1: Word. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to know the language.

1. You sound bitchy. :)
4. I'm guessing the attraction is to "One Week", which was why I bought that album. Nonetheless, I do own more now and adore the band. ;D
5. It's a hobby. Some people make models, some build things, some play sports. In the end, doesn't it cost the same?
8. Oh my god why did I go "YONDAIME?"
15. I'm a girl and I roleplay guys all the time. I don't think I've played a girl for a while, at least in a way that my interest was in it.
20. I still need to read that book so I can fangirl with you.

It's from my understanding that the people who don't like Hideki are TRC fanbrats who like to ship Fay/Chii (and that turned out well, didn't it?) and use those excuses as "reasons" why Hideki doesn't suit someone as "sweet and innocent" as Chii.

That's just what I see, anyway. *shrug* I may be wrong.

5) I don't know, I can't really tell you. I do not posses a dollfie, but I'm really wanting one. I have a deal with one of my best friend, sooner or later we'll buy one of those that are sold in couple, then I'll have the male, and she'll have the female.
I know it's a total waste of money, but the idea of making one of my charas in dollfie form is so good I really want to do it!
I guess human brain is strange. (though I do know there are other priorities before, so my case is a little different)

11) I never finished reading chobits, so I don't know if that would be possible, but whenever people told me about the "he gave up sex for her!" I always though "can't he use the backdoor?" ;_;

15) Idiot. Simply idiots. I play a tons of males and I'm awsome at it, and I know a lot of MALE players that play awsome female charas. Isn't roleplay about becoming someone else, in mind? When you play you're not a girl anymore, you are your chara, and if you're chara is a male? Then you're playing as a male, that's it. Saying you can't play as a male because you're a female is retarded, so it is the other way around.

17) I worry about it a lot too. If there is no-one to tell your fandom friends you suddendly died or something, then in a month or so you're just vanished. It's so sad...

18) I played PW with a lot of expetation about Phoenix/Edgeword. I was sort of disappointed when I didn't see hints at all. I find GumshoexEdgeworth a lot more plausible, personally.

[identity profile] icthyopook.livejournal.com 2007-08-27 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
5. My friend and I did the same thing. :) It worked out real well. We got a $400 (Too & Bee-A of D.O.D.) set and split it halfway, so we both got a cute Dollfie for $200. (I got Too[boy] and my friend got Bee-A[girl].)

Good luck on getting yours. :D
