Teaching Men Not to Rape (tw)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone actually believe this nonsense jw

I've seen it a lot more recently,

and it's so self evidently facile.

We do for the most part, and the vast majority of rapists are PPOs.

They're not doing it because they don't know it's wrong or they've never been sat down by their mother and had a good heart to heart.

It's because, no shit, criminals tend to ignore that.

I feel like I read something recently that said that virtually all male rapists actually believe that all men are rapists but are better at hiding it then they are.

(Don't know if this is relevant to the discussion though.)

I think it is absolutely relevant. It has to do with how they see norms of male/female interactions.

Wait. Are you arguing that we shouldn't have campaigns that teach men not to rape?

Are you not aware of the rape culture we (at least Americans) live in?

Are you purposely ignoring a ton of evidence and studies?

Are you just trying to stir up wank?

Re: Teaching Men Not to Rape (tw)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd actually be interested in this.

I've read some fairly compelling studies that a lot of the way rape as a social problem is thought of and proposals to deal with it in both the standard police spheres, and the feminist ones isn't accurate.

This is spark notes, but it was mostly comparison of the number of offences in a lot of the east asian countries, cultural perceptions, and culture of violence - with the latter being the most influential.

I guess those of us who have been raped by women don't count then?

And what about male victims of rape, by men or women, it's kind of insulting to throw a bunch of rape survivors in with actual rapists because they share the same gender.

I share the gender of my rapist. But people like you don't care about girls raped by other girls.

Re: Teaching Men Not to Rape (tw)

Actually, the thing with rape culture in the west [including the US] is that men tend to know what they're doing is *wrong*, it's just handled in a way that makes it easy for them to get away with it.

For example, the tendency to tell women they shouldn't have been wearing those clothes, or 'Are you sure you're not just regretting having sex with him? Do you really want to ruin a guy's life because of that regret?*' There's even the general tendency to blame the victim, and/or accuse them of lying despite the fact that it's somewhere around only 1-2% of all reported rapes are fruad? [For the record, that's very very low compared to the vast majority of crimes.]

So no. Most men who rape know what they're doing is wrong. Point in fact, if you look at studies most are actually repeat offenders. Rape culture means that society tends to excuse what they do, instead of them not knowing what they're doing in most cases.

*Yes, this really does get asked

Rapists lack empathy, and no amount of lecturing can replace what they do not have. Though....not all rapists are men. Also, I think this issue should be brought up, because anyone can be a victim.

Re: Teaching Men Not to Rape (tw)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's the thing, a lot of people don't understand rape. They think it's this violent pouncing in a park or some shit. A lot of men, a lot of people in general, don't understand that fucking a person who is unconscious or too drunk to consent or roofied, they don't understand that that is rape. So a lot of the "don't' be that guy" type of teaching mean not to rape campaigns are about educating people that yeah, that's rape. Don't do that. And yeah, I think it's important.

So yeah, a lot of men rape women because they don't know it's wrong. And that's why educating men not to rape and what counts as rape is important.

People who believe this nonsense don't care about rape survivors. They care about ONE kind of rape survivor; women raped by men. The rest of us survivors, women raped by women, men raped by men or women, are thrown to the dogs.

Completely unacceptable garbage. Needs to be derailed and made completely about men and male victims of female rape before I'll even look at it.

Good god, this is why no one takes feminists seriously. The fact that the overwhelming majority of rape victims are female and their attacker is male is no good reason to frame the discussion this way. No one cares what you think, ladies. Let's get back to talking about real problems happening to real people like man-on-man rape in prisons.

At least those victims aren't just making it up because they regretted it the day after.

to train Insanenoodlyguy not to rape?

I mean he isn't particularly good at it but I'd constantly be looking down to find the little bastard raping my leg. I tried yelling NO NOODLE NO RAPING but that didn't work so I tried spraying him with a little bottle of water. He was undeterred. Rolled up newspaper didn't work either.

I couldn't take him outside without him flat out trying to rape a cat or something.

Eventually I had to put him in the crate whenever he looked rapey.

"Teaching Men Not to Rape" is insulting in itself toward men because it makes the assumption that all men at their natural core are rapists and you MUST TEACH them to get over this instinct.

If I were a guy, I would be disgusted by this.

This thread is a perfect example of Poe's Law.

I can not figure out who is trolling and who's serious.

I mean, some of the SJW and MRA posts must be trolling - it's inevitable. But they're just such perfect examples of the types, that figuring out which ones is damn near impossible.

I don't really think it's supposed to change men. I think it's supposed to make women feel better.

As said, a vast majority of men are not rapists. A vast majority of rapists are not strangers or people you just met.

I think there is a rape culture. It's a culture of acting like rape is just around the corner for every woman, conformation biased surveys and scare tactics. But why? What does this accomplish? Female paranoia?

I feel like a lot of people posting in this thread (other than the trolls, who are trolling) kind of missed the point behind the "Teaching Men Not To Rape" posts. I haven't seen any that actually propose that as the be-all end-all answer to rape.

Rather, the first one was created as a reaction to all the campaigns that act like the way to stop rape is to put the onus on victims (who, yes, are mostly women) to protect themselves. The idea behind "Teaching Men Not to Rape" campaigns is to say, okay, we need a new dialogue because telling women not to wear long hair or go without mace as a prevention mechanism is bullshit.

The one thing I learned in criminal justice class it's that you can't, actually, control the criminals. So you should focus on protecting yourself. Whether that means avoiding dangerous places or whatever. Frankly, I'm tired of this attitude that anything aimed at women protecting themselves from getting raped is automatic victim blaming and should be ignored. Yes, it would be ideal if there were no criminals, but since there are you don't gain anything by saying "I should be able to do whatever I want, and the rapists need to change their ways." And I'm not talking about wearing. Provocative clothes or anything like that, but maybe you should lock your doors, not drink things that have been laying out in public without you looking at them, not walk down dark, private areas alone, don't drink until you can't remember the next day, and if someone comes up to you wearing a sign saying "I'm a rapist," it's not victim blaming to tell people they shouldn't trust them. Yes, the rapist has the problem. No, no one deserves to be raped. But that's not the same as saying that you shouldn't do anything to protect yourself.

This just reminds me of a discussion we had about date rape at a forum I don't frequent anymore. A lot of the women told their brief experiences of almost having been date raped and generally followed it up with something along the lines of, "but I shouldn't have put myself in that situation in the first place." A good number of the men were saying things like, "When a child is dangling a juicy piece of meat over an alligator's head, of course the alligator will bite the stupid kid's arm off." (And yes, someone did compare a drunk woman to a kid tempting an alligator with a piece of meat.)

I went in with, "It's not about being drunk, it's about respecting a human being." Needless to say, a lot of the men told me that I should "know better" and that if I were to get drunk it was OK for them to try to get lucky with me. It's my fault if I get drunk and pass out and he decides to fuck me. I couldn't.

And once, at work, there was discussion going on about famous men accused of raping women. A male coworker mentioned that Tupac was accused of raping a woman a long time ago, and he know Tupac didn't rape that woman because he was famous. Why would he need to rape a woman when there were so many women willing to sleep with him?
I wasn't going to say anything, but that really set me off. I told him that that wasn't how rape works. Men don't rape women just because they're horny and can't find a woman who wants to sleep with them. Rapists get a joy out of raping people. Yes, there is the sexual desire, but people don't just go out and rape other people because they're sexually frustrated.

So I really don't know what men think. That or I somehow end up talking to some real creepy assholes. I really hope none of my brothers think that way.
