Reddit doesn't have bromance (with lots of dick touching)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-24 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I like buddy stories. I would totally read about a "bromance" between two people even if they're not two dudes. But there's rarely the chemistry and relationship like that between two ladies or men and women.

And where on reddit are you hanging out? Because if it's all bromances and broships then I want to go to there.

Have you SEEN the people on Reddit? We don't have straight white guy fetishes, guy, we only ship the ones that aren't fugly - with some exemptions granted for the Brits.

I have four guy friends from college who have the most epic bromance ever. They love each other. Really and truly care for each other. Anyone who meets them knows that they will always choose each other. When one of them left for the Navy, they weren't ashamed to admit that they cried and felt lost without him. Those guys are some of the best friends I had in college.

That's why I enjoy bromance. Because it's finally saying that it's OK for two men to have a platonic homoromantic relationship. That it's OK for men to be that close to each other. That those kinds of friendships should be embraced and not shied away from. That loving another man deeply doesn't always mean you're gay or fucking (even though it shouldn't matter if you are).

Obviously, not every bromance in fiction is without pitfalls. Some play the "but we're SO not gay!" thing too hard. But some are genuinely amazing. Like Hercules/Iolaus.

There are many things I don't understand about fandom, but reddit is never the answer.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-24 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of people are generally tired of romances, so it's refreshing to see a friendship. While I understand why a lot of people like reading HoYay and LesYay into these things, there's so few female friendships portrayed well in cinema and TV that I'm always disappointed when fans of two characters I like are all about shipping them, rather than being BF5ever.

Because, really, how many times has this "I don't like bromances" secret popped up?

I would hope nobody needs to really explain the appeal of friendship stories but if there's anything that particularly draws me to the male buddies it might be the fact that men aren't thought of as being so touchy-feely so when there's a very matter-of-fact intimacy to the relationship I just find that to be very heartwarming.

I love fictional friendships in general. I'd prefer if there were more good girl friendships or even co-ed friendships, but bromances are also good when they're written well.

BUT when people go on and on about how bromance is the best thing ever and they don't like other kinds of friendship, I don't get that either. So I kind of see what you mean.

I just don't see fandom's obsession with white dudes period.

Not that there aren't white dudes that I love, because there totally are. But... it is 90% of what fandom is obsessed with.

And bromance isn't really novel. Men being touchy-feely isn't really novel either? These are such common tropes in fiction that I don't get what the big deal about them is. This isn't to say that a well-written romance can't be awesome, but I don't see why it's valued so highly above other relationships (possibly because gay).

No matter the genders and ethnicity of the people involved, that sort of dynamic is one of my favourites. I love strong friendships, and it's also my favourite foundation for romance.

I think it's popular because of two reasons, mainly; it's what's available, and both women and men are able to identify with the characters. Women read stories about both girls and boys from the start, and so have no problems identifying with and empathising with male characters. Creators know this, and since men aren't expected to be able to identify with female characters, they make most things about men, since men are the norm.

Until boys and men are expected to relate to female characters as much as girls and women now are able to relate to male characters, the imbalance will continue.

Lets not forget, though, that one of the most popular "bromances" have been between a man and a woman (X-Files).

I can already tell that you're a frequent one on ONTD. Why do people think bringing up race always helps prove a point? There are plenty of mixed race slash ships that fandom fawns over. Sure, not as much as two white guys but that has more to do with the fact that well-represented POCs come far and few between.

"Straight white guys...all fandom cares about"

Really? Try harder.

As for why people like "bromance" - some people like to read about platonic friendships. (It's not always two males, either. Could be two women or a man and a woman.) If you don't like it then don't read those fics.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-24 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I fucking hate the word bromance so much. Maybe if there was a term like sismance or brosismance or sibmance in equal usage I wouldn't mind it.
