Agreed.

Or maybe the internet has realized that like all 'geeky' hobbies there are wide spectrum of people that take part. Not every furry is on the creep gross end. And when I had a panic attack at a con and was sitting in the middle of the floor having a melt down and being ignored by everyone it was a group of furries that stopped and helped me.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry that happened to you :(

Agreed!

I have to say that there's aspects of the furry fandom that makes me uncomfortable and I'm still a bit wary of the fandom because of some runs as a Pokémon fan, but not everyone who's a furry (or most furries for that matter) is some gross creep, either.

And I mean, why? What is the need for intolerance against furries. They seem pretty harmless.

Why should an entire group of people be 'tolerated' and why is it a bad thing that it's getting more common for people to do so?

Idk, maybe it's just me, but I find furry art really easy to avoid.

Furries- always an appropriate target for our scorn and derision. The MLP famdom has not neglected this fact, as most people mock clopping Bronies much as they do yiffing furries.

/I'm being sarcastic. I don't really think mocking furries is a nice thing to do.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I don't hate furries. I just hate that they're called a fandom. YOU'RE NOT A FANDOM; you don't have source material or canon, ffs. Please instead refer to yourself as a group of likeminded hobbyists/enthusiasts/lifestyle advocates, as per my requests.

Eh, they're harmless enough. I mean, they're way above the shota and noncon fans in that they don't have to insist that their kink is purely hypothetical-imaginary and not something they'd ever act on in real life, for starters. Hell, I'd put them above RPF, even. I mean, yeah, it's kind of weird, but that's the internet for you - and it's easy enough to avoid.

Coming from a sexual orientation that is generally ignored (you're not asexual, you just haven't found the right person yet!), it's nice to be able to express your true self on the internet especially if no one understand in real life. Furry can be a squick for me too but like everything else on the internet if you don't like it then just go on a different site.

I am hoping this is a troll secret, but I will try to treat it like OP is actually serious or semi-serious.

Honestly, I was on the internet in the early to mid 90's when furries started getting attention and in the early 2000's when the hatred for furries basically started peaking. MLP's popularity has almost nothing to do with the overblown hatred for furries dying down, it's been doing it for years and honestly I haven't seen any of the really bad stuff directed towards them for 5 years or more at least. The internet just grew tired of hating them and they never really deserved 90% of what they got anyway.

You have to realize that when they first started appearing on the internet, it was in the days when many people had never used anything like it before, and few realized that any of the less normal hobbies or fetishes even existed. This was a time when the popular perception was dictated largely through media, most people knew about things like D&D through the 80's satanic cult scare and 99 out of a 100 people didn't know or care what a trekkie was, much less knew there were actual conventions. The internet exposed these hobbies, and put them in a place that made finding them easy and quick. So the people reacted and furries became the designated punching bag of the internet, because, if nothing else internet fandom contains many raging hypocrites who are perfectly willing to pile scorn on those they see as inferior or worse in much the same manner that wider society scorned them. In the end, the internet furry hate has mostly been coasting on that early inertia for years now and most people have gotten tired of it, there's nothing furries have done that hasn't been done by other fandoms, hobbyists, or groups over the years. Really, what you need to realize is that furries just aren't that special, they are just like any other geeky hobby with fursuits instead of cheap renfair armor or colorful anime wigs.

Even today, with so much expansion of the internet the vast majority of people aren't even going to know what a furry is, much less manage to care at all about whether or not they should tolerate them. It was amusing back in the 90's and early 2000's, but it was like the modern day hatred for boy bands and the Twilight books, amusing at first but soon gets annoying to the point where the people wasting so much time and effort hating these groups starts to look just as sad and crazy as the over the top fans they are making fun of. It's almost like a meme in the way it spreads, so many people I talked to back in the day never really knew anything about furries other that the worst of the worst that gets reposted on sites like Something awful or Portal of evil they just spread the hate around like so many people who posted about the cake being a lie even though they had never played Portal; and in the end, like most memes it became over-saturated to the point where people just stopped caring.

I don't really get furry hate, because the perception of all furries as weird or perverse seems like yet another case of a very vocal, extreme minority drowning out otherwise reasonable members of a community. I was under the impression that only a small percentage of furry "fandom" actually carries the sexual aspect over into real life.

Beyond yiffing in hell, you and I BOTH know that furry-ism is, in fact, as harmless as any other kink involving two consenting adults. Treating it as somehow sicker than most when there's, say, /d/ out there is hypocritical, period.

The only difference is the hilarious "fursecution" some of them claim and the trainwreck enjoyment you can get reading about some of their weird-ass lifestyles, but whose life isn't a train wreck? let's be real. Also, otherkin and otakukin are starting to claim oppression nowadays too, so they're not even unique there.

I'm mad I ever met a chill, funny furry, because now I have to defend them >:(

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yiffing, clopping...you know, whatever, that's not what bothers me. What does bother me is that creatures with muzzles can't kiss, they can't even pucker, their mouths aren't made for it and maybe in the grand scheme of things it's a petty concern but it looks like one of the wolf-fox things is swallowing the other wolf-fox thing's face.

Sorry, no. I just wish the irrational, misdirected hate would stop being a Thing on the internet, instead of periodically shifting targets like it seems to do.

When I was in college, furries were some of the most thoughtful, trustworthy people on campus. My stereotype, to the extent that I had one, was that they were non-violent, often vegan, nearly all LGBTQ, and hardcore about consent and acceptance. They impressed me. Their detractors have too, but very much in the opposite direction.

There is sexy stuff in the fandom, yes, but that is just a subset of it. Calling 'furry' a kink is like calling 'sci-fi' a kink.

Two more counts of animal cruelty have been added to the charges already faced by Peter Bower, known in the furry fandom as Krypto1701.

In May, Bower was charged with two counts of animal cruelty after authorities discovered that he had had sexual relations with his three-year-old shepherd-mix dog, Aurora. New evidence suggests sexual activity with a previous pet, a German shepherd named Maggie.

Animal abuse cases have been known in Florida; many may have seen a story where a blind man named Alan Yoder, known as Jayren in the furry fandom, admitted performing sex acts with his guide dog — although in that case, the lack of a specific law did not prevent him being charged with felony animal cruelty.
