Re: Medieval literature

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I feel silly for not mentioning this in my earlier post--I took a medieval literature course once, fully expecting to be bored to tears by Beowulf, and I really, really loved it. (This was in Michael Alexander's translation.) We also read Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the Canterbury Tales. There's a translation of Gawain by J. R. R. Tolkien, but Chaucer's Middle English is a lot more accessible than you might think.

Re: I don't get why people respond to old secrets

I used to do this to years old conversation threads when I was really new to LJ and everything back in the day. Now, it's obvious to me but to other new folks it might not be.

Also different communities have different opportune time windows - or whatever the right phrase is. Like fanfic and meta in people's personal journals can go on for months. Many fandom community posts can go on for at least a week or more. Whereas places like here and ontd are the extreme, after a day it's pretty much old news already. Getting used to the different windows of opportunity can take some time.

Preeeeetty much, yeah. I think I have a more consistent kind of where and how I place my text on secrets though.

Ah, fair enough. Catch you next thread :o)

Completely off topic (or maybe not) but I went with my parents to Target one random day not long after this movie came out on DVD. I picked up a copy because I actually kinda liked it when I saw it in theaters. When I brought it up to the register to buy (with my own money), my dad took one look at the DVD cover and said: 'I'm not letting you buy lesbian porn, put that back'. I then had to spend the next 5 minutes convincing my parents that it was in fact a legit movie and not porn. Why they thought lesbian porn would be on sale at Target is beyond me..... (btw I was 20 at the time).

(also lol @ u thinking that the idea that gays = AIDS was somehow ever destroyed)

NAYRT

That's a good reason to change it, preferably to something he wouldn't associate with you.

James Bond is an old ass character, it'd be weird if they changed his character to fit today's standards (and the new movies are based on old novels anyway)

That doesn't change the fact that in REAL LIFE that behavior is not acceptable even for men, it's like you didn't even read the part I wrote about AIDS and STDs because maybe things are different where you are but here everyone assumes a guy who sleeps around probably has a disease or something. James Bond is more of a wish-fulfillment than a guy to actual aspire to these days

Well, fannish people have been known to do stranger things.

Re: "but you seem so heterosexual!"

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
For some reason, when it comes to sexuality, people go more by stereotypes (especially appearance-related ones) than by whether or not that person actually exhibits any attraction to a particular gender.

Apparently my whole family thinks I'm a lesbian when I'm actually a gay guy? They see that I act masculine but think I'm a girl, so in their eyes, that makes me a lesbian. Let's ignore that I have never once indicated any attraction to women (because I'm not attracted to them).

Seems like if you're a girl and don't look butch, people will assume you are straight despite all evidence to the contrary. (Whereas if you do look like a butch girl, everyone will assume you're a lesbian, again despite all evidence to the contrary.)

She's staying an alicorn. In the press release for the episode, there's a quote that assures viewers that even though her appearance has now changed, she'll still have the same personality. Season four will be about her new challenges as a princess.

Huh?
I don't know why you brought homosexuality into this but when I was growing up in the 90s everyone knew that ANYONE could get HIV/AIDS if they weren't careful and I was terrified I would get a disease if a dude even so much as touched me (and I wasn't alone in this, a lot of teens went through this)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think this fandom actually understands Stiles as a character at all.

(Not that I do, but he reminds me a lot of my brother, so its hard for me to understand why other people see him this way)

Re: I think I can out-stupid everyone

I definitely win for the stupidest stupid!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
So basically "Trust me! From now on I will be content to only be with one person, even though I was never content with that in the past. I'm totally into long term relationships even though all my previous ones (and there are many) lasted days, hours, or minutes before I got bored with them."

You know, the person might be shooting one hundred precent straight, but you can't blame their partner for having worries that they won't find long term monogamy as enjoyable and fulfilling as they are saying they will.

As others have said, trust has to be earned, not automatically granted. Especially when someone is breaking from a life-long habit.

I hope she pulls over and punches Don in the face, and then leaves him to hitch hike home.

I hate Don Draper so much.

Uh...I don't know what Kirk/Bones fic you've been reading, but most of the ones I read ages back....er, Bones never said a thing about that nor angsted.

Unless I'm forgetting details, I don't remember that in any of those fics. Unless that's the new trend now...

Guys this is important.

Walk into a dark room where the only illumination is your computer screen. Hold up a newly-opened bottle of Mike's hard lemonade, regular lemon flavor.

It fucking glows.

What else do you do when you can't go anywhere really

Re: Community Fandom Being Dumb

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-02-09 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I love when that happens - when someone's enthusiasm and love can sort of rub off and bring people in or back to the fandom. It's actually how I end up in a lot of my fandoms, because my friends will just be enjoying it so plainly and you know, I'm happy when my friends are happy and then there's happy feelings association and then I have to dive in and see what all the happy is about.

Yes and No

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-02-09 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I can't speak for Star Trek fandom, but in Avengers fandom it's a bit of a...mixed bag.

There is some slutshaming in Avengers fandom overall, but I have rarely seen fics that slutshame Tony. Most usually use his past promiscuity as one expression or another of a Deep Seated Issue, and in turn his sex life is deeply correlated with resolving certain Issues i.e. he sleeps around because he fears committed intimacy, so once he gets over that fear, he doesn't sleep around. And yeah, I can definitely see how that can be sort of loosely interpreted as slutshaming*. But I rarely see direct slutshaming of Tony.

* = a lot of modern slutshaming methods do tend to imply that women only sleep around because they have Issues or Past Trauma, because they can't enjoy sex without commitment/emotion even though men can; while I don't think this really applies to the way Tony's sex life is usually presented in fic, I can see how a lot of people would take it that way
