i live in the city but apaprently my suburb isn't supported by it.

I'm a little sad no one has mentioned 'moist' yet :( I was so hoping for a little Dead Like Me sidebar chat.

Jeeves & Wooster crossover with Inception.

Oh. Yes.

Re: Some douche took my laundry out of the dorm washing machine before it was finished...

I don't get all these anons who say you took it too far. Seems perfectly reasonable to me. This is a person who is a willfully selfish ass. Hopefully she'll think she overlooked them when making the transfer and think twice before pulling that kind of stunt again.

In the past I've just tossed the hijacker's wet clothes out on a table or in a corner and used their time to finish my load.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
No they don't. No one is obligated to do anything for themselves, not even make themselves happy.

I heard something on NPR about how he's supposed to go into a kind of "good as dead" seclusion, but I don't know if that's just until after the election or for the rest of his life.

Yep, pretty sure they changed singers, I think (?) the blonde guy left and now the guy with dreadlocks is the singer.

Re: I think I might be losing my faith

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
If you think being an atheist requires faith you're doing it wrong. Atheism isn't about weighing your feelings or opinions. It has nothing to do with faith. Go be an agnostic. You'll be much happier in the long run.

Re: Best "Much Ado About Nothing" adaptations?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Another vote for this. Kenneth Branagh doing the bird noises in the hedge is one of the funniest things I've seen in my life. The entire cast is like a dream come true and the whole thing is perfectly acted.

Re: Victoria Bitter / Andrew Blake update?

Oh, he's currently on tumblr living it up as andythanfiction.tumblr.com. He's apparently in the SPN fandom and into Destiel. He comes off as weird and creepy...a lot. No surprises there.

I like Branagh's (1993) pretty well- it's one of the best-known, and Branagh and Thompson are well-matched as Benedick and Beatrice (they were married at the time). I usually don't like his directing that much, but it's good for the most part. There's gratuitous slow-mo at some moments, which for me is just awkward and a little funny- awkward-funny-it's-going-on-too-long-please-stop-now not haha-funny. Robert Sean Leonard is a good Claudio, managing to still be kinda likeable at the end, considering how he treated Hero. (Okay, it's the puppy dog eyes, I admit it!) The Hero is completely forgettable, I don't even remember who plays her. Some people find fault with Keanu as Don John, and while he does underact a bit (ahem), I've seen worse Don Johns due to overacting so it's a nice change imo. I think Michael Keaton disappoints as Dogberry, but YMMV. Anyway, despite some problems, that's probably the one I'd show. High school age kids will probably respond well to it, they'll know most of the actors, and it doesn't look super dated in the visual and directorial style, like some of the older films. Well as it's a club, maybe that's less of a consideration than an average HS class, but still.

The other major option is the 1973 Sam Waterston/Kathleen Widdoes version. It's the filmed adaptation of the Joe Papp production, and it's been given a setting update to the turn of the 20th century, with Beatrice as a suffragette type. I haven't seen it in years, but it's pretty good. A little slow, if memory serves.

I've only seen clips of the 1984 Cherie Lunghi/Robert Lindsey one, but it seemed ok. Same for the 1967 Maggie Smith/Robert Stephens one- Frank Finlay is a much livelier Dogberry. And wee baby Derek Jacobi is Don John haha!

Well, maybe the first step is thinking about what you're worried about. What's the worst-case-scenario if you unfollow the rude fan and reach out to the one who was nice to you? I'm not saying there wouldn't be consequences, because very fandom is different. But it also may not be as big of a deal as you think it might be.

And maybe take a step back from the anon meme. For one thing, on an anon meme, it can be hard to get a realistic idea of how the majority of the fandom feels, or how many people are even participating. Some anon memes are more reasonable, and open to dissent, than others. They're not always good places to change people's minds. But at the same time, it's anon. People are unlikely to connect the comment to you. So why not try saying something simple like, "When I've talked to her, she's been really nice. I expected her to be a bitch based on what I'd heard, but that hasn't been my experience at all"? And then drop it.

But I agree with some other people that the more productive thing you can do is to reach out to this fan directly, if you feel up to it. At the very least, thank her for her generosity.

When it comes down to it, it's a shame for her not to get the kindness she deserves because of peer pressure. But I think it hurts you even more. It'd be a shame not to give a potentially good friend a chance because of the attitudes of rude people whom you don't even want to be friends with.

Yet another anon-Like the other anon said, I'm afraid of using Nair where I'd most need it, because holy shit ouch. Also, I'd probably need to bathe in it. It's not enough that I have a period every month, complete with cramps, mood swings, and migraines, I've also got more body and facial hair than a lot of men. Hairy boobs, hairy ass, beard and mustache--the worst of both sexes. It fucking sucks. Probably something hormonal, since it only started like ten years after I hit puberty, but I can't afford to see a doctor.

ah

I mute the main bg music. Not...the voices or anything. ok sometimes i mute them too if they're too annoying and games like pokemon where it's so repetitive i can't stand it.

lol i don't mute movies. movies are 50% and 50% viewing. games are 45%viewing, 45%

Speaking as someone who doesn't get it either, can I get a quick recap of the vid to spare myself from watching it?

I have new neighbors, they're Hispanic. I'm already assuming their racist pieces of trash, simply because I have never had Hispanic neighbors that didn't verbally and physically harass me/disallow me from leaving my apartment from the front/thrown eggs at my windows or broken out the windows to my car.

Secret for obvious reasons. ;/

A bit off-topic... but speaking as a religious person, the phrase "I'll be praying for you" really irks me. I'm not sure why.

Re: Cable sucks

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, cable tv cables are different from telephone/dsl lines and antennas. The ones most people have here are coaxial cables that uses radio frequency to send signals. Cable is better than dsl because it can pack more data per cross section of the line than dsl cables can. Usually they're only found in cities because it costs the cable company a lot of money to install and maintain the lines. Whereas telephone lines already exist for many households so no extra money for laying down lines are needed.

There is an even fancier cable option in my city, optical fiber cables. Fiber internet is faster than coaxial cable internet because the data density is even better. Imagine downloading a 4gb high-def movie in 2 minutes and a half, that's now fast it is. Unfortunately the infrastructure still new so it costs over $200/months for fiber and not everyone can get this service. Most people use the normal cable option that is ~10 times slower and costs ~$50/month.

I don't know if there are resources you can get or places you can go or people you can talk to. I don't know how to help.

But I wish I could.
