Moves you loved, that everyone else laughed at.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have a movie that you just love to watch, that among your friends or even the media at at large, laughed at or made fun of?

Do you love a movie that no one else seems to like? That everyone loves to hate?

Let me know F!S.

I dunno about laughed at, but most people's reactions to A Scanner Darkly tends to be "AN ANIMATED MOVIE ABOUT DRUUUUGS! TRIIIPPPYYYY" and then I want to smack them.

Batman & Robin.

Mostly because I am guaranteed to like any movie that has both Uma Thurman and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Quantum of Solace. No, really. I like that film.

I generally like the so-called outlandish and unbelievable James Bond movies a lot better than the good ones. The shitty ones are generally ludicrous enough that I can suspend my disbelief, whereas the good ones fall into that uncanny valley where they have elements that are too ludicrous to be taken completely seriously, but not ludicrous enough to kickstart that suspension of disbelief reaction I use for scifi and superhero-ish stuff to shift my brain onto the proper track.

Waterworld

I don't care that it's universally laughed at, I love that stupid movie.

High School Musical 2 is the best movie ever made and no one can convince me otherwise.

Seriously, it's so sweet and endearing and cheesy in just the right parts and the characters do legitimately feel real in it with 'real' high school problems (you know the ones that you thought were legit in high school but actually looking back are silly) and the music is super catchy. People think it's dumb because it says "High School Musical" on it and ok it's not the SMARTEST movie in the world, but it's a lot of fun, and imo much better than the other two.

If someone tells me they didn't like it I assume they've never seen it :P

I adored The Phantom Menace when it first came out, and I still have a fair amount of affection for it - more so than for any of the other Star Wars movies.

I also loved Jar Jar, oops

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.

I hate to admit it, but my enjoyment can only partially be described by the "it's so bad it's good" formula.

I enjoyed the Twilight movies in a completely non-ironic way.

Die Another Day, Quantum of Solace and Elektra are the first that comes to mind. Oh and all the Resident Evil and The Pirates of the Caribbean movies, I'm even looking forward to getting more of them if they ever gets made.

As I said during our last introductions in class, on the question favourite movies/genres: Bad Action Films, I love 'em all, non ironically.

I've said this before and I'll say it again: The Fast and Furious movies. IDC, they're fun (and pretty).

Also, all the Matrix movies.

You know, I would have said "none," but then I read this thread. :/

Batman and Robin
Quantum of Solace
Waterworld
The Phantom Menace
Die Another Day
The Fast and the Furious movies

So, I guess I just don't pay that much attention to public reaction, because the fact that some of these movies are hated really surprises me. Or I just have bad taste, who knows.

Taken 2.

A lot of critics slammed that movie and my friends all thought it was vastly inferior to the first one. It has one star on Rotten Tomatoes. These people are all entirely wrong, because they fail to understand what those movies are actually about.

The first movie is not really an action hero movie. It's a dad fantasy where he is totally proven right about what happens if you don't remember to text as soon as you get in. It's a great big 'I told you so' dad catharsis. But it's okay, because in this universe the dad is a superhero and can kill all the people.

The second movie is exactly the same only better, because this time all he's trying to do is get her to concentrate on learning to drive because this is an important life skill and she'll regret it if she still has to get a ride everywhere when she's eighteen. But it's okay, because in this universe the dad is a superhero and can teach her to drive stick around the narrow alleyways of a city while shooting people. That whole movie is about being taught to drive by an overbearing father. Everything else is irrelevant. And it is awesome.

The Expendables.

The Expendables 2.

Sure some people liked it, but in my experience it's been mostly dudes who felt like their masculinity would be undermined if they dared dislike these testosterone filled movies. I know only two women besides myself who liked them. Genuinely liked them.

I think Splice was a shit movie plotwise, but all the reasons people hate it even if they haven't seen it (rape! incest! pseudo-underage!) make me love it as spank bank material.

Did you mean: all my favourite movies.

The short list would probably include X-Men: The Last Stand, Wing Commander, and Green Lantern.

Pee-wee Herman's Big Adventure

How do you not love this scene (and the rest of the movie)?

Van Helsing. It's so pretty!!! And Hugh Jackman with all that glorious hair! *swoon* I ship him and Dracula. I'd like to write prequel fic, one day.

And Inuyasha. I genuinely like IY, and it's not nostalgia goggles. The manga is better, though!

Everybody's mentioning Batman and Robin, lol. I recently got to watch Batman, Batman Forever, Batman Returns, and Batman and Robin. They're all totally ludicrous and completely unbelievable, and I love them for that reason.

I unironically enjoyed all the X-Men movies, including Wolverine's. They were fun and I liked them, come at me bro.
