(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)Using Native American totems as mascots for sports teams that are not Native and are in no way involved with Natives? I'm just going out on a limb there, if anyone wants to correct me, feel free to do so!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)What about american rock music? Elvis etc becoming wildly popular singing and playing what was previously "black music", while failing to challenge all the cultural and economic barriers to black people making a similar living off of their music.
I know it's an old one, but if that's not appropriation I don't know what is.

Borrowing something from another culture but ignoring the religious significance or cultural gravity of that thing is douchey.
But I don't really get why tumblr gets worked up about... a lot of the things it gets worked up about.
Re: Appropriation
(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 01:29 am (UTC)(link)and then they divide the cultures because everyone's too fucking afraid to discover or learn about others because "APPROPRIATION"
i,e the stupid Harlem Shake is appropriation. I don't think anyone seriously thinks ~white males~ created the Harlem Shake or associate it with ?Harlem? '9hell after watching the video I'm not any more knowledgeable on what it's mean to be "appropriating". It's just a silly video that got loads of views for being silly.
I'm glad RL is a little more sensible, I imagine tumblr will go all ARGH APPROPRIATION if they saw me wearing a scarf or buying imported asian foods.
fuck you, that culture is sharing its food with me I am going to fucking eat it.
Re: Appropriation
For the record, I think we're giving tumblr too much credit here. I'm worried about tumblr scaring the portion of geeky kids who pay attention to tumblr away from neat stuff. Tumblr can affect people who pay attention to tumblr.
Meanwhile the world spins on, wearing whatever the fuck they want to wear and listening to whatever the fuck they want to listen to and making whatever the fuck music they like, while tumblr shoves itself further into its own navel.
You know, maybe tumblr is a good thing. The tumblr kids are so obsessed with tumblr that they don't seem to write a damn thing anywhere else. They're really easy to ignore.

Re: Appropriation
(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 10:18 am (UTC)(link)It's called "Harlem Shake" BECAUSE OF THE SONG BEING USED IN THE VIDEOS.
THAT
IS
IT.
No one is actually conflating it with Harlem!
Re: Appropriation
It's why unless it's directly related to my medium of choice or it's just a super general, common sense SJ thing I don't say anything.

Re: Appropriation
(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 12:27 am (UTC)(link)Re: Appropriation
We make a lot of Native Norwegian* things in school and we dress up and play pretend and go to look at how their culture used (and to some extent still is) to be. Their flag and traditional clothes and equipment get used by everyone in Norway.
*though I haven't really spent a lot of time trying to understand it, mostly because every time I see something about it, it is just people saying "this is wrong", but not explaining why.
*Same is the Norwegian name for them, which is confusing when you are writing in English.
Re: Appropriation
(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 12:10 am (UTC)(link)It's not like you then take that stuff and sell it, right? It's not like you take that image as a logo for a corporation that sells cars or medicine or whatever. Learning about history or culture in a constructive manner isn't appropriation.
Taking a symbol of a culture you have no part of and using it to sell something is appropriation.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 01:38 am (UTC)(link)So I find it really hard to believe or care about, except to feel irritated that I need to secondguess posting a selfie of my wearing feathers in my hair.
When I'm not American
It's in no way associated to American History or Natives
It's fucking feathers
In my hair (and hat)
and no-one IRL has ever gone "oh you're approoriating this culture on the other side of the world + all native cultures ever stop you horrible person!"
It's totally an internet thing and not really real.
Re: Appropriation
But seriously, I don't think that many people would be bothered by you wearing feathers in your hair. If you also painted your face in a stereotypically "Native" way, or claimed you were dressing up like an Indian or something, then that's a different matter.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)My boss is an extremely wealthy black man. He has two sons, one of which saw maybe two or three years of living in the so-so part of town before moving into multi million dollar homes in a gated community that's gated against lesser-wealthy-but-still-very-wealthy people from coming in. Said son does rap music where he talks about living in the ghetto and all the hardships coming from that. I would hazard a guess that the child has never seen hardship his whole life (that he can still remember), and certainly not what would come from living in the actual ghetto here in this rather large town.
If Elvis was appropriating, what's this guy doing? He doesn't know one thing about being in hard times or everything else that goes with living in the ghetto, and that's apparently a requirement for being allowed to do the music he's doing...and yet, Elvis is condemned while people buy this guy's CDs. Is the only reason he's allowed to fake it because he's black?
