Exercise routine - what's yours?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-25 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Depression and the evils of winter conspired against me and I find myself quite a bit larger than I was a year ago. I've got to start from couch potato muscle-less start with exercising and I am at a total loss. Which brings me to the topic - what is your exercise routine? Do you go to the gym or at home? Equipment or stick to basics? Every day or sporadic workouts? Share!

Also has anyone done the Couch to 5k thing? I have a friend that swears by it but I have never run a day in my life and now I'm the highest weight and least in shape of my life, so I have my doubts.

I usually just go jogging on the weekends, I don't have time for exercising otherwise. It's more of an enjoyment thing than an exercising thing though (we live up in the mountains, lovely scenery). Oh and of course, every Tuesday and Thursday is PE for the kids I teach so there's a lot of exercising going on there too.

I have an exercise-bike-pedaler-thingie that I force myself to use 3 times a week. Eventually I aim for "force myself to use every day", but I'm working up to that. Also, I have physical issues that prevent me from running or jogging, so the couch thing is out.

Currently I'm doing this dvd:
http://www.amazon.com/Exhale-Core-Fusion-Day-Sculpt/dp/B006W7L3TC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366932342&sr=8-1&keywords=exhale+30+day

and I absolutely love it. It's organized nicely, low-impact with plenty of gentle stretching so there really isn't a lot of pain during or after, the workouts are only 20 minutes and it's easy to do fewer reps/follow modifications when I can't do something. I really recommend it. The first workout is a bit intimidating, quite a few pushups, but after that they're easier - and as you go you build up strength and stamina.

Also: bellydance. World Dance New York puts out quite a few really good dvds. They're nice and gentle for beginners, but there's always room for mastery.

I exercise at home using ChaLean Extreme and TurboFire. I follow a hybrid schedule combining both programs, which generally amounts to anywhere from 45-90 minutes of exercise 5-6 days a week.

Chalene is very inspiring and all of her workouts are ridiculously fun. I'm already down 86 lbs (in 11 months), and extremely close to my weight loss goal. :)

TurboFire focuses more on cardio, whereas ChaLean incorporates both cardio and strength training. I use both because I have the time, but you can easily choose one or the other. It will definitely be less time consuming (generally 30-45 mins per exercise).

You can definitely start the Couch to 5k program. Just start of really slow if you're really unfit. For example, it took me 2 weeks to get through 'week 1', and another 3 weeks to get through 'week 2', and so on. What should have been a 9 week program took me about 20 weeks, but that was my pace. It also kept me injury free!

It has been about 2 years since I finished the program and I currently run anywhere from 5-7 miles 3-4x a week. I just completed my nth half-marathon, and it was a breeze, and that's coming from someone who couldn't even run for a minute during the first week of the program without wanting to die.

Running/jogging is wonderful, and I definitely recommend it to those who can.

Good God, just when I was starting to doubt myself after having a few too many bad days running, this here's a good pick-me-up.

DA.

Same here. I just finished week five and have been bummed out because I've been doing the program for almost fifteen weeks already. I just keep on repeating weeks. It's GREAT to know that there are people out there who successfully completed the program even if it took them much longer to do so.

I'm feeling a lot more energetic about going for my run tomorrow.

At least a 30 min run 3x a week on the treadmill. Outside if not raining/icy.

I don't know if it really counts as exercising, but sometimes on nice days I walk. I live out in the boonies, and my family owns a lot of property so it's nice. Lots of up hill, down hill though. Sometimes the dogs, and goat come with me.

I have an elliptical that I do 45-60 minutes on 6 days a week. (Also, walking at work on lunch and breaks since I sit behind a desk.)

I've never done the couch to 5k thing, but I was just reading the site, and it it sounds like a pretty good program. You work up to running if you are in poor shape. I like that it gives you a goal besides "I want to be at this weight." (Because "I want to be at this weight," is the kind of goal that is giving me issues right now since I'm not meeting it. It's very frustrating.) Anyway, I don't run either, but now I'm kind of interested in this program.

But, anon, start out slow. I started with 15 minutes a day just to get some kind of activity it. I know you didn't ask for advice, but there's mine.

I agree with the nonnie above me about running. I started with a simple path around my parents' house, going back and forth in a big C (to work both sides evenly). I'd jog one C, walk two, jog one, etc, for half an hour. Over the months and years (and moving out of my parents' house), I now jog/walk for 45 minutes 5 times a week, 3 minutes jogging, 1 walking. I'll be bumping up the intensity again pretty soon. ^^

I went from never exercising to being rather fit. Lost 40 pounds in about a year and a half. I started jogging when I was 27 years old.

The trick is getting out there and doing it MORE than three times a week. I like to go after I wake up, and after morning tea (only tea) and before breakfast.

Also running on the street/around your property is free, though you have to deal with weather and potential threats like inattentive drivers and such. I've been nearly hit twice. I do have an exercise bike for when the weather is really nasty or I want to avoid people, but I prefer to be out on the pavement. Harder to give up when you're 2 miles from home!

One trick I used to keep me going was carrying a book with me. I'd read as I walked, and carry it when I ran. Anything to keep the energy level up!

I run for about an hour every day, but it's something I've been doing for years.

An old roommate of mine tried the Couch to 5K program - she was severely overweight and had never run as a hobby before - and found it worked fine. You can go at your own pace and there are no time/distance restraints. It'll say something like "now jog for 90 seconds", but it doesn't say how far you have to get in that time.

I've been running on and off for years, and I'm really trying to commit to doing it regularly nowadays. If you have a smartphone there are some awesome running apps that will track your route, let you know how far along you are during the run, track how fast you were going at certain points in your run, and other cool stuff. I've been using Runkeeper which even has "training plans" you can follow.

I also try to stretch a lot after I run, not just in a "warm down" way but also trying to actually get more flexibility, which is an aspect of fitness that is realllly de-emphasized in the public consciousness/most training programs. I can't stand yoga, though, I do a modified version of the stretching I used to do when I was in gymnastics.

I also keep saying that I'll go back to gymnastics one day... I know of one place in my city that does drop-in adult open gym, which I've gone to sometimes, but it's far away and really hard to keep myself motivated with no coach, not having anyone to train with and no competitions to aim for. Hoping to find an adult class to do next year though.

Re. the Couch to 5K thing, it sounds like you're exactly the target market for it, so go for it! :

I love barre workouts, such as The Bar Method and Physique 57. Barre workouts are my only form of exercise, since they provide pretty much everything I need, and for someone wanting to get into shape, they're a great form of strength training. I like them because they require focus, patience, and concentration.

Since neither have any studios in my area for live classes, I rely on the dvds, which are just as effective. I keep a steady workout rotation with them, which takes up to an hour a day, six days a week.

I can't run because I have degenerative arthritis in both my knees, but I have had a lot of success with dance work out videos. There's a few of them streaming on Netflix too so you don't have to buy anything. It goes by faster than a straightup exercise tape, and it's fun. You can even turn the sound down once you get the routine down and use your own music. And if you really get into it, you can really burn a lot of calories.

I have to walk or bike to the bus terminal every day, so that's 30-40 minutes of that, and before bed I try to do one or two workout videos on YouTube...right now I'm doing the 'POP Pilates' videos, which are at a good level for me ^^

circuit training. yeah, it may be at Curves and all the women there are my mothers age and the music is boring but it's a full body workout that anyone can tailor intensity too. if a 90 year old can do it so can I.

I try 3 times a week. try.

walk the dog around the neighborhood. usually is 30 minutes and it benefits both of us.
