pads or tampons?

[personal profile] deadtree 2013-04-25 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so I've always been under the impression that tampons are what the cool kids use, but I have never used them because they kinda creep me out. However, I now work in a place with 99% female employees and we were randomly discussing this and I discovered that most of them use pads, regardless of their age or any other factor.

So show of hands: who uses pads, who uses tampons? I wanna know if tampons are as popular and cool as I was lead to believe!

Both - tampons for the main flow, pads for backup. Often near the end I'll just go with a pad because pulling a half-dry tampon out is really fucking uncomfortable.

I use pads. Tampons are uncomfortable to me.

TMI alert: I use both, but sometimes I use pads more often when I'm working and don't want to have to get up to change my tampon since you're not supposed to leave them in for more than ~4 hours. Sometimes I'll even use both at the same time, like at the beginning of my period.

I use panty liners and just change them constantly because I can't stand pads and I don't usually bleed heavily enough to use tampons.

Tampons if I'm going out/working. Pads if I'm just bumming at home/at night

Re: pads or tampons?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-25 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
tampons. until the last day or so, then usually a thin pad or panty liner. i used to be only pads and i can't say i would ever go back to that.

Tamponnnnnnnnns. I can't stand having the blood just... down there and, like, staying pressed against my skin. Ewwwwwwww. I even use tampons when I go to sleep, and set an alarm for the middle of the nigh to go change it if I need to.

Although I just decided to switch to that type of birth control where you only have 4 periods a year????!! We'll see how that goes but it sounds like the best idea ever, frankly. And if it's just as possible to have 4 periods a year as one every month, then I'm not sure why we can't just do away with them entirely...

I had the same impression in high school, almost like it was some kind of ritual thing, but I never bothered much with it and I always stuck with pads. I still do now - I try tampons from time to time, but I can always feel them (not always literally, unless I mess up the insertion, but more like I become hyper hyper aware of my body), and because my flow is always really unpredictable I end up having to remove half dry tampons half the time and that just feels way too uncomfortable. Pads work perfectly fine for me 99,9% of the time, so I prefer to stick with them unless I'm feeling adventurous for some reason.

That was a lot of information about a something that requires an either/or answer.

Tampons, slight tmi ahead: I think I've used pads like once in my life and that was like on day one of the first time I had my period?

Pads. I've never tried tampons, mainly because it seems like they would hurt like hell.

Pads. And I have definitely always thought tampons were what the cool kids used. Mostly because I've heard or read many a conversation where tampon users were mocking pad users - "omg it's like walking around with a diaper" etc.

But it's not something I actually discuss so who knows.

Pads; I have what's probably an irrational fear of losing a tampon up there, so I've never used them. Also, my mom used pads, so that's what I sort of "learned" to do.

Pads. My physician browbeat me into trying tampons after my first pelvic exam didn't go so well, so I did once, but -- pads.

Re: pads or tampons?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
All my MS/HS friends used tampons but I always refused to because they were scary/icky/etc. I finally decided to give them a try when I was 20 and LOVED it. I'm a pretty heavy bleeder so wearing pads (only to replace them every 2-3 hours/when I used the bathroom) was SUCH a hassle. Not to mention messy. Tampons make everything so much easier. You don't have to worry about bleeding through your undies, or smelling bad, or feeling like you're literally sitting in your own blood.

I can get away with a panty-liner which I never could before, I don't have to change a tampon for up to 7 hrs, and I feel much more flexible.

'Course, finding the right brand/size/etc takes some work, but it's worth it.

Re: pads or tampons?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Only pads. I don't have a heavy flow and pads are much faster to change.

Tbh, the idea of tampons has always kind of grossed me out. I'm sloughing off uterine lining. I want that shit out, not all soaked up in some cotton swab shoved in me. Plus, either I'm bleeding like someone cut a fucking artery or barely at all, so pads and those thin panty liner things work best for me.

Pads. Even the smallest tampons hurt like hell.

Re: pads or tampons?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I use pads because the thought of putting anything up there on my heavy days just makes me shudder, I don't care that it feels like wearing a nappy(especially because I buy the extra thick ones for the first couple of days) I find them comfortable to wear. Nearly every other lady I know though either uses tampons or a cup.

Re: pads or tampons?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
tampons. I used pads when I was like…eleven, but my mom never bought any that didn't stay in place properly and I'd end up with a leak in my pants anyway. also that glorpy feeling of when a surge of blood comes out is grossocity.

Re: pads or tampons?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Pads, it's what I have always used and I don't like change. At least now I dared to try the fancy brands with the dry-cover bells and whistles, instead of the cheap ones my mom buys that are super thick. It's irrational, but I'm so used to the thick ones (Two for heavy days) that one slim pad makes me uncomfortable and terrified of bleeding everywhere. And I may or may not still use two of the fancy ones on the worst days, for peace of mind.

I'd like to try tampons one day, but my mom is completely against them for virgin girls and that's a fight I don't feel like having, since I'm not that eager to try them for now.
