(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)On a more abstract level, I hope you can recognize in principle why people might have a problem with the dichotomy between the two even if you don't share their feelings. I mean, I don't think the critique of that dichotomy usually comes from "I want to see lots of titties" or whatever; it's more about the negative consequences and the illogical nature of the phenomenon than anyone's personal feelings.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)Personally, I'm fine with nudity if it makes sense. Fred just got out of the shower and is getting dressed = okay. Susie is going to pay her mortgage and forgot a shirt = not okay.

It's not about you (and your preferences). I think it's perfectly fine if you like (fictional) violence.
But many of us (and especially Europeans looking at American media) feel like there is this huge double standard when it comes to violence versus nudity in terms of both rating and perception.
I do think it's nuts that 20 people being shot in the head is "okay" for & 13-year old to see, but OH NOES A NIPPLE AVERT YOUR CHILDREN'S GAZE.
Not all nudity is sexual, and a lot of media is simply unwilling (or not allowed to) make that distinction.
IMHO, it's less damaging for kid to see a boob than live-action evisceration. And THAT'S generally what people are pointing out.
If you, as an adult, or almost-adult, enjoy a bloody gore extravaganza, knock yourself out. The criticism isn't about individual tastes, but about cultural tendencies.

That makes me want to vomit.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 10:13 am (UTC)(link)Yes to all of this.
Same with cursing. It always boggles my mind that Season 3 of Supernatural is rated FSK18 (NC-17) in Germany (my guess is for Dean's death scene, the other seasons are rated FSK16) - but they're not even allowed to say "fuck"?! You're really more concerned about a word than about one of the main characters getting ripped apart in gorey detail?! Different cultures and all, but that just makes no sense to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 12:35 am (UTC)(link)Yet, we currently have the situations where killing a whole bunch of people explicitly on screen can lead to a much lower rating than a flash of some bare (not even necessarily sexual) breasts. It isn't about judging people on what they want to see. If you wanna see a violent scene, fine! It's about how our society rates these things and what that says about us as a whole.

Also, I'm hoping this was a troll - there's a quirkyness to it that makes it a great troll secret.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 12:04 am (UTC)(link)I won't fuss you about it, but if I knew you I would avoid you.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 04:28 am (UTC)(link)I get turned on by blood & violence a lot of the time anyway, so...I don't know. Take that how you will.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)If I'm watching someone get torn apart, I'm just watching a special effect. And sometimes it can be interesting to think about how they went about doing that (more for pre cgi movies of course)
But nudity? If I'm watching a woman (and it's always a woman) take her clothes off, she has actually taken her clothes off. I just find it uncomfortable, especially since I then become aware that as a woman this entire scene has not been made with me in mind, I then start to think about how embarresing this would all be, taking your clothes off in front of an entire film crew and then simulating sex with your co-worker.
Yes, I know this technically couldn't be applied to non-sexual nudity, but come on, how often do you see non-sexual nudity? Even if the woman isn't having sex, she's still taking the clothes of to titulate the male audience. That's always the entire purpose of those scenes.
