Did they replace Uhura and Sulu with white actors? I don't understand how it's whitewashing.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Cucumberpatch is playing Khan (Indian dude).

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Which isn't great but it's still... I mean, it's one character. And Ricardo Montalban wasn't white but he wasn't Indian either.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
So one is a-ok?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing worse about a white guy playing a mexican dude than a mexican one doing the same, iyam.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
*indian dude

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ricardo Montalban wasn't Indian, but he was RICARDO MONTALBAN. Therefore, he wins. (I just loved him, that's all.)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
At least they hired someone of color in the original...

the thing that's pissing people off more with this character getting whitewashed is that Khan wasn't just any ordinary character, he was a superhuman type, massively intelligent, in perfect physical condition, charismatic as hell and even somewhat sympathetic. he was a well-developed villain with a full history and he was three dimensional. it's very rare to find a villain like that who is not white.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
+1

And especially in the 60's where they weren't perfect AT ALL when it came to this shit, it was still incredibly daring and radical for them to have the character to be Not White, the actual casting issues notwithstanding.

I mean hoe can you watch the movie where they reveal his name as "Khan Noonien Singh" and not be like "seriously, bitch?"

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
The original actor of Khan was white. His family came from Spain, they just moved to Mexico. IE-No Native Blood. They're white.

So, lol, Khan was always whitewashed :O

(Anonymous) 2013-05-19 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Soooo...because they didn't cast an Indian actor as an Indian character FIFTY YEARS AGO we should just do the same thing now...? Sorry, that's a poor excuse.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Ricardo Montalban was born in Mexico, but was the son of Spanish immigrants. As far as I know, he has no indigenous or non-Caucasian ancestry. In what way is he not white?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I have no strong feelings on this one way or the other, but see posts below by luxshine for someone who does!

(fwiw, on full consideration I would probably tend to agree with you, but I think it's safe to say it's a matter of debate)

He's white, at least from a European perspective. But there seems to be a tendency for Americans to assume that Spanish = Latino, even though that makes no sense historically. I guess that illustrates the fact that race boundaries are fuzzy and as much to do with ideology/ prejudice as anything objective. (See also Martin Sheen adopting a white-sounding name to avoid anti-Latino prejudice, even though he's half-Irish, half-Spanish, and is white - and couldn't pass as anything else. Ironically, with his hair dark Cumberbatch looks pretty Galician.

But I agree that it's ridiculous white-washing to cast either of them as Khan. Though in any case Khan Singh doesn't make a huge amount of sense as a name, given that Khan is typically a Muslim name, and Singh is Sikh. I suppose mostly what that means is that the filmmakers are just continuing to add to a train of fail....

ETA: having read further down the thread, it would seem the question of Montalban's race is more complicated than that. But without trying to defend the makers of XII, I still think there was nothing progressive about casting a Latino as an Indian in the Original Series.

But..wasn't Khan played by an Hispanic actor?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, his parents were from Spain and moved to Mexico so....

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but this was in the 60s. He's an Indian character and they got someone who they could put make-up on to look Indian. Basically a form of blackface. They really should of had him played by an Indian actor.

Ricardo Montalban was white.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-05-17 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
He was the son of Spanish immigrants to Mexico.

Being Mexican or speaking Spanish doesn't make you a POC. There are white people in Mexico and other parts of Latin America.

Hell, a big chunk of Mitt Romney's family has been in Mexico since the nineteenth century. They're as Mexican as Montalban.

I don't disagree with your point re: Montalban and hispanics and POC, but the context for the Romneys being in Mexico is very different from the context for Montalban and people like him. Light-skinned Mexicans of Spanish descent =! Mormons hiding out in Mexico to practice bigamy.

I wasn't talking about the immigration context though; I'm talking about race. I'm not sure there's so huge a difference though; they live in Mexico, they are Mexican citizens, they're both white.

Aside: there are still Mormon towns in Mexico long after they gave up the polygamy thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonia_Ju%C3%A1rez,_Chihuahua

Yeah, this is why I don't understand why people make such a big deal about him being a POC. He was a white guy with heavy makeup playing an Indian character.

Re: Ricardo Montalban was white.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but the character, Khan Noonien Singh, wasn't white. Which, considering his backstory and the context of the show, was a big fucking deal. Casting problems of the 1960s aside, it was still an important statement re eugenics and race.

Ricardo Montalban didn't consider himself white, and did a lot to make Hollywood respect Latino actors more. So please, whatever else you think about this mess, don't erase his identity please.

LOL, Cucumberpatch! Perhaps I am too easily amused, but that's the first time I've seen that. I'm going to Star Trek tonight, and I'm going to pretend that's how you say his name.
