16. [SPOILERS for Star Trek: Into Darkness]

I... think you might be overreacting a little bit. I'm not saying that whitewashing is good, but "unforgivable" and "devastating" seems... a little strong.

Also, I'm not sure why exactly some critiques of the film are totally out of bounds, or how the boundaries are defined between the place where you can only talk about whitewashing, and the place where you're allowed to talk about the film in general, or who created those boundaries.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, it is possible for the film to have more than one thing wrong with it. Not everything is nerd rage.
Take the way the movie portrays women for example. Uhura is a typical sulky woman having a fight with her boyfriend. When this is resolved she is back to being a switchboard operator. Alice Eve is only there for an underwear shot that makes no sense (why would you get changed in front of the shuttle windscreen? Why not just say you're dressing?).
Also, some people are interested in screen writing and film making and were disappointed in pacing and direction. To say that people can only pick one issue with the film to complain about is idiotic. Not everyone is concerned with the same values.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
IA a bit about Alice Eve, but Uhura actually spent surprisingly little time at the switchboard, and a surprisingly large amount of time on away missions, kicking ass. I don't know how you missed that.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Did they replace Uhura and Sulu with white actors? I don't understand how it's whitewashing.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Cucumberpatch is playing Khan (Indian dude).

If you're so shook up about 'whitewashing', why are you paying to see it?

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2013-05-18 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much this. Don't support movies that fail on issues you care about.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
Um... I'm not paying to see it.

idk why you're putting whitewashing in quotes, either.

SJWs have been insufferable beyond belief in the past, but this is an instance where they're absolutely correct, primarily because 1.) there was absolutely no reason to have Cumberbatch be Khan except for cringeworthy nostalgia moments gone horribly wrong, and 2.) Star Trek as a franchise has been fighting this kind of subtle erasure since the day it aired, making this misstep especially egregious.

[identity profile] nezhit.livejournal.com 2013-05-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yet to see the movie, but i kept hoping Uhura won`t replace McCoy :(
Karl Urban deserves spotlight so much more than Zoe Saldana, i personally thought she was terrible in the first movie and i cringed every time she formed "emotion" on her face

god damn :(

Can I just say that it's really annoying that the intense dislike that some people have towards nerd rage seems to have led a lot of people to simply substitute nerd-ragey complaints for social-justicey complains, simply because the latter is seen as more legitimate?

It's like you're not allowed to just dislike anything anymore and so everything has to be couched in terms of social justice and representation because those are the only complaints where people have to take you seriously. I think those complaints are legitimate in themselves but it's just frustrating the position they've taken. If you don't like something, you know what? That's okay. Stop trying to justify your dislike by figuring out a way that the thing you dislike is actually evil.

not necessarily saying that OP is doing this, just something that seems to happen

Khan is supposed to be a genetically created/enhanced superbeing who was involved in the Eugenics Wars right? Whenever I think of 'Eugenics Wars' I automatically think of Nazi Germany & Josef Mengele and the idea of the white, blue eyed blond Adonis as the perfect example of humanity. No reason why re-boot era Trek hasn't taken that idea one step more and Khan had extensive plastic surgery & remodelling to make him into that perfect specimen...

(although the reality is just that they wanted to cast a half-decent currently bankable actor with a large fan following, which is what Bennedict Cumberbatch is)

I didn't care. I probably should care, but I really don't. I enjoyed the film and I'm going to continue to enjoy the film. Tumblr can shout all they want about 'whitewashing' but unless they replaced Sulu & Uhura with white actors and had no actors of colour at all in the film, I'm going to continue to ignore them.

as a lifelong Trekkie myself, I was a little on the "wut" side when I found out that Bread Crumbs was playing Khan, but not so much that it made me not want to see the movie. The fucking "fans" on the other hand... they pissed me off with their endless bullshit to the extent that I almost didn't go. But I did, to the midnight screening, and it was fucking flawless.

So fuck em, the movie is great.

Not sure if this makes anything better or worse, but TOS Khan wasn't necessarily Indian. Roddenberry used variations of that name several times throughout Trek in hopes of getting the attention of a war buddy of his who he lost touch with. TNG had a character named Noonien Soong (Data's creator) who was pretty indisputably white.

I'm honestly angry about all of it. I've been a fan of Trek since I was little (this is how my parents introduced me to the concepts of racism, feminism, and other social problems.)

This doesn't feel like Star Trek to me - that doesn't mean it can't be an enjoyable film, just that messing with it as they have (all the previous complaints and now the changing of Khan) makes it feel like it just tacked on the "Star Trek" name, rather like how the new Devil May Cry game felt. Would people have liked the movie if it didn't have that "brand"?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
JFC, OP, chill out. If people don't like something, then they don't like it. Your complaining about it doesn't make you any better.

Pull up the big boy/big girl panties, get over yourself.

I'm old school, haven't seen this movie, couldn't care less either way about it, but I respect the opinions of anyone who loves it or hates it for any reason. I suggest you do the same and save yourself pointless aggravation.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Fact is, BC nailed it.
OK his skin is the wrong colour, but in all other regards he fucking nailed is as Kahn.

The right actor for the job is more important than the right skin for the job, imo.

Oh, and I'm not an excessive Cumberbitch or anything, I just think he did a great job.

And it really shows. There are lots of things to complain about in this movie, and not all of them have to be social commentary.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, they should have cast a non-white actor as Khan. Because they're absolutely nothing problematic about a dark-skinned terrorist villain being defeated by a couple of white guys.

Superiority of race aside...if you start mixing genes up altogether to try to get perfection, you're bound to get some of the genes that control skin color in there.

It's pretty much been proved impossible for a child of mixed parentage to be darker than, or even the same skintone as, a its darkest-toned parent. (http://multiracial.com/site/content/view/459/27/)

So, in theory, if you mix enough genes around you're going to end up with white, and since the Star Trek reboot is a typically grimdark world for this era of filmmaking, nu!Khan probably never saw enough of the sun to get a tan. Therefore, his being white makes perfect sense.
