Doesn't mean it's not still theft.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Before we get into this again, please define "theft," anon.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Taking something that isn't free without paying for it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Except OP, like many of us, would pay for it if the option were available, and DOES pay for it when it finally becomes so. This is corporate shortsightedness, not individual fail.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is STILL stealing.

Your neighbor has a nice car. You want to buy it. He doesn't want to sell it. So you take it anyway, because you should have a nice car, and it's his fault he doesn't want to sell it to you.

Theft.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Except with pirating he still has the car.

It is not stealing/theft. The person watching a non-sanctioned copy is not taking anything from anyone else. In your example, the car is gone, because the person wants it/takes it. What is physically taken in this instance? Did the person steal DVDs? Nope! Did the person steal a master copy of the work in question? Nope!

Yes, it is illegal, but it is not theft.

Your neighbor's 5 year old drew a crayon stick figure. You want to buy it but your neighbors aren't selling it at any price. You take a photo of the crayon drawing instead and they chase you down the street.

Theft

But unlike your scenario, nobody is deprived of anything by someone instructing their hard drive to arrange the ones and zeroes in a particular way. That's the thing about information: it's freely replicable, barring the cost of obtaining and running the hardware.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think a price- even if it is 0, i.e. "free" - can be applied to something that can't be purchased. With that in mind, can you clarify?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Which this isn't, because the original copy still exists so nothing has been taken. You can't even claim lost revenue when there was no option to pay in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Because you feel entitled to it" is not a legit reason to take something that you did not pay for. It doesn't matter what the circumstances are.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
How can I feel guilty for something that's not even wrong in the first place?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
If you don't think stealing is wrong, you're either a sociopath, or not old enough to be on the internet without your mother's permission.

Wow. I pirate, too, but I'm not going to pretend it's not stealing.

Jesus, so many entitled people here acting like it's their ~moral right~ to take things without paying for them.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
You're conflating two separate issues.

1. People have differing opinions about the morality of piracy.

2. People are irked that that debate tends to be lost under a pile of people who don't understand that "piracy = theft" is a useless definition socially, legally, and probably even etymologically, because it's facile.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have to think piracy is right to think it's not theft.

It's like, I don't think it's theft when someone copies someone's results on a test, it's still a serious academic problem that needs to be punished.

You can't really talk about the problematic aspects of things like cheating or piracy while you're unwilling to properly understand the actual consequences. Neither the consequences of cheating nor the consequences of piracy are quite like those of stealing, so the comparison is unhelpful for the discussion.
