I love all three of those but I don't bring them up unless someone else does first, or it's answering a "what shows do you like?" question.

It's definitely annoying when people won't shut up about trying to get you into a show they watch, especially when you're not interested, but I think it can happen with fans of any show.

I feel you, OP. I hadn't even heard of Community until a bunch of rabid fans invaded a comm for another fandom I was in to tell us how ~superior~ their show (and therefore they) was. I've never bothered to try to watch it. No amount of recommendations can override the damage those fans did to that show for me.

Wow, that's really crazy. As much as I like Community I don't blame you for being put off.

Meh depends on what circles you hang out in. I know a lot of multifandom people in my corner of Community fandom (actually pretty much all my friends are), but I've seen a lot of douchecanoes on reddit, AV club and sometimes the tumblr tags.

Sorry that Community fans were dicks to you :/ Rest assured that most of the content creators also hate the pretentious Community fans who insult other tv shows and bemoan the worsening of the show constantly, mostly because they don't know how to have fun and kill our buzz with it too.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I was just talking to a friend and she said she was thinking about watching Community, my reply was that it's an awesome show but do not go online looking for the fandom. It will only lead to bitterness.

Depends on what you ship to be super honest.

The Jeff/Annie faction of the fandom can get super loud and annoying and bug the writers all the time, but the Troy/Abed portion of the fandom is the most pleasant, kind, mellow fandom I've ever been in.

I can barely comprehend a fandom for Community. It's so meta that seems like it's its own fandom. I wouldn't be able to handle any more than that.

You forgot Firefly

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
While I haven't heard anything about Firefly in a long time but well...I used to share a house [a very small house] with two people who called themselves 'brown coats' because of the show. Yeah, they can get really over the top - but thankfully seem to have died down some [at least in my social circles].

GoT on the other hand...is *really* starting to get bad.

I think a big part of that is that fans being loud/out there/spreading info about the show got Serenity. So it's kind of encouraged, in a way.

(though yeah there were loud fans before Serenity, so)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-24 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a Community fan, but even I can admit we get that way just like in the secret. I'm not proud of it, but it definitely happens in fandom.

Meanwhile, I didn't care for Arrested Development, a show I was "supposed" to love. I just didn't, so I stopped watching.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I just cannot abide Arrested Development. I can't relate to a super-dysfunctional family, because I didn't have one like that. That, and the only good character on that show that I don't absolutely hate is GOB.

Fans like to think they are smart for liking things, especially when they are not incredibly popular things, and like to yak about it. Especially when they think fans of succesfully renewed things are somehow responsible for their thing being cancelled.

Is there a word for tv show nationalism?

My mental term for it has been "being a K-Pop fan" for a while now. As in, when you do stuff like this, you're being a K-pop fan about the show you like.

Hmm. I've seen this happen for Arrested Development, and especially Community, but never Craig Ferguson - lots of gushing about him, but always in appropriate venues, no bashing other shows.

I'm a huge fan of Arrested Development and I adore Community, but I almost didn't get into both because when I see overeager fans of something who act like that, my gut reaction is almost always to go "WELL FINE I don't need your show" even though I love both.

I mean, it happens with a lot of shows, but yeah these three are definitely magnets to this type of fan.

I don't get why people get so excited over Arrested Development?

I watch it and stuff and I'm halfway through season one and I guess the writing for it is admittedly very solid and it has some nice jokes but. . .I just don't get it. Why do people stan for it so hard?

Is that gonna just be something I won't get unless I stan for it too?

I think the problem with Community fans is that the show is ALWAYS under threat of cancellation, so they feel like they need to make as much noise as possible. Can't speak for the other two.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
That is a HUGE part of the problem with Community fans. Never mind that the show already has more seasons than many other shows that were just as good, if not better. (Pushing Daisies, Firefly, Arrested Development, Wondefalls, Dead Like Me, Go On, Freaks and Geeks, Veronica Mars, Roswell, The United States of Tara, American Dreams, Dollhouse...and so on.)

It sucks for a show to be in constant fear of cancellation, but that shit got old two seasons ago.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-25 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
But Community's in it's 4th season, and I feel like after 2 seasons, it gets much, much harder to play that card. Not that they can't be upset about the possibility of the show being canceled, but that's a really respectable run and it's not so much of an ~injustice~ if it's canceled.

The constant bashing of shows like The Big Bang Theory by Community fans makes me so angry. It's 2013. You don't have to choose one show per time slot. Stop telling me why what I like sucks instead of telling me why what you like is awesome.

I love how AD fans are posting their usual shit on here about how if you don't appreciate the show now, it's because you don't ~understand it yet. AD is far from the first show to use throwbacks or foreshadowing in terms of jokes and while watching it, I pretty much predicted the gags that were gonna happen. It's not that clever.

I also would like to include Firefly in that list, OP. And Community fans are probably the most annoying among the bunch because the show is still going on. I wish NBC would just put it out of its misery already because even the actors were already anticipating its cancellation and the show's gotten worse, anyway.

Also, with Craig Ferguson there's just the usual elitism. I know with every Tonight Show-related discussion, there's always some genius who jumps in yelling "BAH THEY ALL SUCK. CRAIG FERGUSON IS THE ONLY GOOD HOST" and apparently it's because he's ~subversive and meta about how 'bad' his show is. First off, pretty much every show host makes fun of their own show so he's not unique in that regard. Second, people like to overanalyze Ferguson's humor: I had to read an entire essay on how genius it is that Ferguson has a robot sidekick to "represent that real sidekicks on shows are just robots who agree with everything the host says" (that was essentially the gist of it) and I just thought... Fuck no, man, it's just a fucking robot. Craig Ferguson doesn't think about it as much as you do. (I still like Ferguson's show, though, so don't jump on me, fans)

Listen, the more shit taste a person has, the worse it is for them to have it pointed out. You can't just evangelize to them because then they get further entrenched in their shit groove.
