And yet you managed to spell The Dark Knight as "The Dark Night".

I'm not saying this opinion is troll-worthy. It's a perfectly okay opinion. But this secret is pretty clearly wank-bait.

[spoilers]

Cause of how they fucked over Pa Kent for one.

Went from the guy who made superman to the guy who almost suppressed him and died pointlessly for a goddamn dog. You live in Kansas all your life, you know when the daytime sky turns night YOU DO NOT FUCKING SPEND ANY TIME OUTSIDE THAT'S NOT NECESSARY.

But I could forgive heroic stupidity... if it wasn't for how he wanted to hide clark away forever.

I liked Clark Kent's character, but some things were way too over done, like the fight at the end (how many buildings did they destroy?? completely over the top).

Then, the thing that pissed me off the most was that he didn't want to kill someone, and in the process probably ended up killing TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE when he could have just twisted that guy's neck in the beginning and spared us all the pain.

The beginning was the most interesting part to me. I wish they'd explored that more.

It didn't feel like a Superman movie. The screwball comedy between Lois and Clark, the contrast between Clark and Superman, the small touches of humour... I guess it's interesting to explore his alien side but that isn't what I really want from Superman.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-05 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Because he wasn't the unapologetically noble Superman we've all come to love, the sort of guy that makes Benton Fraser look like Draco Malfoy. It was just another Dork Age "dark" hero flying brick with the Superman brand slapped on it.

Next Superman Movie better tackle that, or maybe just do Kingdom Come.

[Picture is Superman from the film "Man of Steel" standing dramatically someplace with mountains and snow. He is a man with short dark hair, a blue spandex uniform with the logo of a red "S" on his chest and a huge red cape billowing behind him.]

I unironically think this is the best superhero movie since The Dark Knight. I don't understand why people hate it.

I wouldn't say best. It has some problems, mostly to do with pacing. But it IS a good film.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I hate the title - mostly because my mind automatically goes to Stalin (Stalin comes from the Russian word for "steel") and I get upset that it isn't about the USSR.

Yeah but The Dark Knight freakin' sucked.

(I actually enjoyed Man of Steel and didn't realize it was so hated. It was pretty flawed though, namely in how ridiculously long and overly destructive the battle scenes were. Still it was fun.)

I think it wasn't so bad if you take it as an original story. However, as a long time fan of all things Superman, they absolutely murdered the canon in irredeemable ways.

Well I wouldn't go that far, but I think it was awesome.

Thing about Superman is, he's so fuckin iconic that you don't want to do too much to him or you mess up what makes him beloved--I couldn't stand Superman Returns because it went too far to the 'dark and depressing' side. But if you do the same thing over and over again it gets boring. Comic books can do it because as soon as you change the artist it adds a different feel, but movies? I think they did a great job tweaking the canon enough to make it fresh and interesting without changing the core of Kal-El.

He was still essentially good, humble but knowing full well how powerful he is, juggling the identity of someone raised on Earth who knows he's not really 'human'. I loved the sharp edge of snark, reminded me of Dean Cain's Supes from the 'Lois and Clark' tv series. And I feel like it balanced the public response well too; maybe in this modern age people don't want to show the world accepting superheroes with open arms, but Supes is a good guy and if the other characters had ceaselessly gone all Marvel on him it would have depressed me and made me dislike the movie.

teal deer; i liked it tooooo

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Man of Steel.

Watching the Dark Knight left me with the urge to cut my own wrists open just to lighten the damned mood after it was over.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I wanted to like this movie, but its treatment of women (other than Lois Lane)(but yeah actually her also) just pissed me off too much. At least Pa Kent actually had a personality and did stuff.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
How would you ironically like something? How does someone unironically like something? Can't yall just like a thing XD

[identity profile] cara_chapel.livejournal.com 2013-07-06 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, for me, it was because the movie wastes at least 40 minutes with the Kryptonians hitting each other and knocking each other into interminable, destructive ballistic trajectories for no good reason-- they're not harming one another, or making any progress in furthering the plot. It's just gratuitous CGI and destruction. Also, to me it makes no sense that Clark could fly up into the Kryptonian machine since it was turning Earth's environment into Krypton and that would have reduced his powers.

I don't *hate* it, but it was *boring.*

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I thought I was the only one. It had its flaws, but so did Batman Begins.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
I, too, enjoyed the movie. Didn't know people were bashing it.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it, and I especially liked that it wasn't more of the same, which apparently is what the detractors seem to want. The Chris Reeves movies are right there if you want them, and this needed to be different, just like when Nolan rebooted Batman -- you didn't want to go in there and see a version that was just like Burton's. That's why I couldn't bring myself to like Spider-Man last year: even though it did so many things right, so much of it still felt like a rehash of the previous films.

Because it was just awful. Dull and tedious. The last 40 minutes were unbearable, how many endings does a film have? This had about 20.

Then there was the woeful wooden acting. Zod was the worst, he had a plastic face that didn't move once and was entirely unbelievable. Amy Adams is sweet, but where was the fiesty boshy Lois? Who has banter with Clark, and Jimmy Olsen (where was he?) Perry White was half asleep. It was like none of them could be bothered either.
