I miss watching the JDramas, too. There are so many good ones!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Some recs please? I'm in the mood to watch some recently but don't know what. Also is the HanaKimi remake any good?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
You want older stuff or newer stuff? Drama or Comedy?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm up for trying anything as long as it has good script, cast, etc. Anyway I like both drama and comedy.

nayrt

Long Vacation has always been a classic, I recommend it to most people I know. I also enjoyed Tiger and Dragon, Stand Up!!, Kisarazu Cat's Eye, Maou, Akumu Chan, and for real quirkiness: Keizoku and Keizoku 2: SPEC.

Koizora (Bring tissues), Hana kimi (hilariousness), Hana yori dango (pretty much my all time fav!).

While we're at it, I'll list some excellent Jdramas from other genres too. Because I think for these non-romance/comedy sections, I prefer Jdramas far more than Korean ones which tend to add dramatic romance plots to everything. Here goes:

Detective/police procedural: Shinzanmono, Strawberry Night, Galileo
Suspense/thriller: Maou, Bloody Monday
Medical: Jin <-- highly recommended

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I only recently got into jdramas, so now I feel uncool and behind the times :V

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's because right now the korean's are making the better dramas isn't it? I feel like there's an overabundance of repetitive shows coming out of Japan and Korea is doing (slightly) better.

Also, higher production values in korean dramas, as well as their licensing deals with Dramacrazy and through them Hulu give them a larger audience.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
+1000 to the Dramcrazy/Netflix/Hulu stuff. Japan is fucking crazy keeping all their shit offline. If they want money they need to be doing that. This is the main reason why I think jdramas have become so much less popular. People pirated and torrented back in the day because things like streaming wasn't available. No one wants to be a thief, and given the options, most people will go with the option where they don't have to be.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have any issues with being a "thief", but streaming rather than having to torrent or join a private sharing group is just so much easier.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
DramaCrazy was the pirate site, DramaFever is the legal one.

HanaKimiiiii! You will always be my first love J-drama!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I got stoned because I made the mistake of saying that I liked the taiwanese version better :(

Aww, I'm sorry anon. You like what you like! You shouldn't get shit because of that.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, that's bullshit! Both have their merits, the Taiwanese one was much more loyal to the comics, the girl actually passed as a boy, it was funny in it's own way. I think most people just can't get past the production values of TW dramas. But I haven't watched dramas in years, maybe it's improved by now.

Plus the taiwanese version didn't have that douche Oguri Shun, so that's a definite bonus

[Picture is the Japanese actor Yusuke Yamamoto. He is a young man with hair dyed reddish brown, with dark roots and a few of the locks of hair have light blond tips. Part of it is styled forward, in layers, some hair covering the middle of his forehead and the rest framing his face. The longest parts on the front almost reach his chin, and the longest parts on his back reach the middle of his neck. He is wearing a white shirt and a gray suit jacket and is looking sort of worried, with his hands up and forward in a surrender or "please stop" gesture. He has light olive skin. There are large trees behind him.]

I miss the time when everyone was crazy about Japanese dramas. Now Korean dramas dominate the web, but I'm waiting for Japanese dramas to be "in" again.

I miss it too, OP. The amount of people with whom I can talk about Jdramas is getting smaller and smaller by the day.
Kdramas might be very popular right now, but I find it hard to like them. Sure, there are good ones that I enjoyed, but overall they have a different feel that I just can't like them as much as Jdramas.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
It seems to me that (maybe to help the Hallyu wave?) Korean companies are WAY more willing to have their shows stream in different regions. I can jump on Hulu right now and have hundreds of Kdrama options. I'm not sure if Japanese media companies are even trying to do this. Maybe Johnny's Entertainment the problem (since they seem to have a finger in every pie), or is it just the way rights are done in Japan?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, it's not only Johnny's. Regardless whether there's a Johnny's or not in it, Japanese dramas and movies are so much harder to get than Korean ones.

When it comes to music, recently some labels and management like Avex already became more lax by uploading their artists' PVs on their official Youtube channel, but still it's not enough compared to the gungho promotions of Korean medias (which is even backed by their government).

Wasn't he in the live-action Ouran?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he was. He played as Tamaki Suoh :)
That pic is from Hanakimi.
