A magnificent work of art

[personal profile] thene 2013-08-22 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
My roommates have gone to Florida, verily God's waiting room, for the week to settle the affairs of a dead lady. The lady died of alcoholism; she'd recently been diagnosed with alcohol dementia and was, in many ways, not quite right in the head. By coincidence she was also a very hardline Republican.

Anyway, in this lady's house my roommates have discovered a great work of art. It was displayed nicely too - they figure the frame alone must have been a few hundred bucks. The dead lady must have been very proud of it. Rather than donating or auctioning it, my roommates have decided they will bring it home with them and display it in our home with pride.

It is called 'The Forgotten Man'. I have not bothered to find out the name of the artist.

I hate my roommates so much.

That poor white guy isn't president and Obama is and Obama being president hates the Constitution... or something.

Re: A magnificent work of art

(Anonymous) 2013-08-22 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Means nothing to me and I'm an American. I'm trying to figure it out based on what I know of thene's hatred for Republicans and that they mentioned the lady was a Republican, but I'm not sure if the so-called-masterpiece is referring to Obama, the guy on the bench, or the former presidents as the forgotten man. It's kinda hard to tell with a low-res copy of mediocre digital art, though.

The frame alone was almost certainly a few hundred bucks because anything more than the pressboard junk Target sells will cost at least $150 to frame something over 14x11 and be able to support the glass, which will cost at least another $50 if you go the super cheap route. For something 24x36 with regular glass, the average cost of framing without mattes is $450.

IIRC, the author's a hard right-wing/Christian "satirist" and he's done an entire series of these with different figureheads about different topics, mostly how democrats are destroying the world, I think?

Re: A magnificent work of art

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
This is weird. It's a striking piece of art, no question about that. And I can even see how some people think Obama is stepping all over the constitution, but to be fair, most of the things people cite are things Bush Jr did, too. But other Democrats applauding him? That...that just doesn't jibe for me and I genuinely can't see how anyone could or would think that.

I dunno, maybe it's because I'm fed up with the Democrats vs Republicans thing. And I also think Bush and Obama are both terrible presidents and most (maybe even all) of our former presidents would be appalled by their actions.

Perhaps this is a party and Obama just threw off the guy's groove. And refuses to apologise. And is stepping on the music sheet on purpose, so the guy is sad and other presidents want to hug him a lot.
Clinton is just over there starting an a capella singing trio.

Re: A magnificent work of art

...Well, the governments been doing that for a really long time [both conservatives and liberals alike, tbh.]

...Though I do find it funny, the morbid sense, that two presidents that were actually pretty bad about it are supposed to be on the 'sympathetic' side, according to this painting.

[I know I'm not mentioning the horrible crap obviously wrong - but that's been mentioned in this thread already and well. Yeah. Is horrible, and wrong.]

I think the bench dude is an amateur stripper (look at all that money on the ground) and the angry presidents wanted to see him Magic Mike-in' it and thrusting all up in that park but Obama is a party pooper and said "No, dude, my daughters don't need to see you waggling your junk. Take that shit back to the club or something." That paper he is standing on is a flyer for the local Magic Mike-esque club and Thomas Jefferson or whoever is like "Yo, lift your foot up so I can see what this club is called! I didn't come to 21st century just to not get a lap dance from an attractive man!" The end.

I love how the presidents in the background look pretty indifferent and like the artist just directly copied their portraits and stuffed them back there. Wilson in particular looks like he's posing: "I don't know what's going on, but DAMN, am I pretty!"

I don't understand! Aren't the Republicans supposed to hate Bench Man? He's obviously an unemployed person (otherwise, why would he be so upset and downtrodden?), and according to the right, all of the unemployed are lazy losers who chose to not work.

The artist is Jon MacNaughton, and you REALLY need to check out his website. He's go other hilariously-awful works like these:

Even better, some of these paintings have interactive pages where you can mouse over parts of the paintings and get annotations of their symbolism and meaning. And let me tell you that those annotations are HILARIOUS.

And yet Lincoln's "republicans" were our modern "democrats." Funny how Repubs always conveniently forget that tidbit, never mind those who don't even know.
