Military "advice"

(Anonymous) 2013-08-29 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in my early twenties, and I've been wanting to join the military (I live in the U.S.) for a few years now. For a number of reasons I was unable to join the Army ROTC program at my university, so while I am well-versed in military processes and the like, I've not had official officer training or anything. I would like to be an officer if possible (but wouldn't mind going in as enlisted).

Anyway, awhile ago my dad told me that his Army buddy said that if I have a college degree, I can go into the military as an officer right off the bat. I think my dad misunderstood what his friend was saying, because being an officer requires special training (which is what ROTC is for). But my dad seems convinced that I don't need ROTC to be an officer, as long as I have a degree in something.

Is he right? I'm genuinely curious, and I haven't found much information about it online. I just figured - like I said - that in order to go in as an officer, you'd need officer training. (FTR, I was initially wanting to join the Air Force, but I'm willing to join any branch; I know each branch has their own procedures and stuff so if my dad is correct about one or more of them, I'd love to know.)

I have literally no specialist knowledge in this and I'm sure there's a million people here who do know this.

But my understanding is that you can go straight to officer candidate school if you have a college degree and all that good shit. So you do need officer training, but they'll give it to you if they like you.

You do realize a country without an army is a country conquered.

Your reluctance of the world being more complicated than you (or I) thought and that everyone is different from one another with many shades of grey are most intriguing.

Please tell me more.

Ignore this person. They're an idiot. Instead, I advise you to read On Combat by Dave Grossman. It was recced to me by my brother who is SOCOM and currently deployed, and it's highly enjoyable, interesting, and forthright.

Yeah, you need officer training. if not with ROTC, then with the officer candidate school. You enlist as 09s, go through basic training like everyone else, and then you go onto BOLC I and II. And then to specific branch school, like Artillery or Infantry.

Mostly the same for all branches, just with different names. Well, except for that the Army is for the most part the only branch that makes their officer candidate go through enlisted training; most of the others hae separate initial training schools that separate commission from enlisted.

really? I was thinking about joining the air force actually and this is interesting

Air Fore has OTS, and is generally seen as (at least physially) the easiest of the officer trainings to accomplish. However, lots of people want to join Air Fore OTS, and there's about a year's wait in between being accepted to actually going to training. They may hae postponed any upcoming recruitment, too, from the large supply and dwindling demand from the draw down.

It's also extremely competitive, and favors people with hard science degrees, and from what I'e understood has very rigorous academic work.

If you mean just enlisted, then go for it; they're pretty muh always taking in recruits.

Join the Coastguard. It is the only branch of the military that has a worthwhile role.

Just chiming in to say this is 100% correct. I was a recruiter for 18 months and I enlisted two Soldiers to eventually become officers (different MOS code though since this was before the restructure in 05 and 06). I was also later stationed at a TRADOC post from 09 to 12 and wrote some of the coursework for MI BOLC 1 & II. I had to audit the BOLC I course a couple of times and each class had students who went through BCT as SPC, so I know it's still possible.

>MI BOLC 1 & II

Holy shit, no kidding. This is the branch I want to pursue, should I go .mil so it's kind of weird and neat to meet someone who's authored some of the stuff.

If they don't slash the upcoming officer courses, that is. Might just end up going 35 enlisted something.

You go through OCS, Officer Candidate School, if you have a college degree. They used to come and talk to my engineering classes my senior year to recruit us.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I imagine they'd be looking at the engineering students in particular.

I don't know how much you know about their selection process or anything but I'm majoring in a language (not a particularly valuable one at this point in time, it's not Arabic or anything) and I'm also majoring in political science. Do you think I'd have a difficult time being considered for OCS? I just figure they're taking science/engineering degrees above others.

I can't speak on their behalf, as it's been 4 years since I graduated. Your best bet is to go to your local recruiting office and see what they have to say.

I also went to university in the South near a military base and my major was civil engineering so they definitely pushed for us to consider it.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-08-30 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
DA

The Army has translators in hundreds of languages and it would really just depend on what language you majored in and if they have a need for it. If they don't, you can always wait 6 months and check again. Definitely talk a recruiter though because they're the ones that have real-time access to what jobs are open.

Just don't let them try to talk you into something else. I know that sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how easy it is for those guys to twist things around and make you think you're signing up for one thing and then you find out down the road it's something entirely different. And don't buy their crap of "You can go to OCS after you serve your first enlistment contract" because that's rarely true for anyone and is never true for anyone with a 4 year degree (earned prior to enlisting) because of age caps.
