Re: Did you parents ever think you were gay (when you weren't)

Nope. An agnostic won't believe one way or the other without proof.

I can't agree with Atheists cause we have no proof that God(s) don't exist. I can't agree with Theists cause we have no proof that God(s) exist.

Sorry, but no, hon.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-01 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
We don't have any proof anything doesn't exist, you can't prove a negative.

But I can guarantee you don't apply that logic to everything else in your life.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-01 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Statistics disagrees with you.

With the specific example of a higher being, however, we'd have to come up with some set rules for what a God requires, though, and then prove those don't exist. It's the first part that's difficult, not the second.

Re: Did you parents ever think you were gay (when you weren't)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-01 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not what atheism is. An atheist doesn't claim to know that gods don't exist; they simply do not extend their belief to the claim that gods DO exist. Knowledge and belief are different things. Most atheists are also agnostic. You can be both.

Then they aren't Atheist. They're plain Agnostic.

Re: Did you parents ever think you were gay (when you weren't)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-01 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. They assert no belief that gods exist. They abstain from theism. That makes them atheists. You don't need to claim certain knowledge that gods don't exist in order to be an atheist.

Re: Did you parents ever think you were gay (when you weren't)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
No... that's not true. You can be an agnostic atheist or an agnostic theist. Belief has nothing to do with the knowledge. An agnostic is someone who doesn't claim to know--basically 90% of the planet, including lots of devoted believers. Surveys show the VAST majority of atheists are agnostic atheists.

You can be both, sure, but some atheists are not both. They say point-blank that it's a fact that supernatural forces don't exist because [insert various reasons]. Those are the people - usually the loudest versions, on the internet in particular - agnostics might be trying to differentiate themselves from.

Nope. So-called gnostic atheists and New Atheists (who are currently most vocal) are two different things. New Atheists tend to take the pragmatic position after Russell that in the absence of proof, disbelief is the most reasonable position.

Someone is ignorant of almost all atheist and theist writing on the issue of proof over the last century.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Someone else has got way too much time on their hands if they ARE well-versed in such an esoteric subject, and is incredibly full of themselves to boot. F!S ≠ academia.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-09-02 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
The beliefs of people you are talking to are hardly "esoteric." If you're clueless about those beliefs, you could, I don't know, ask a question or do a basic google search.

*shakes head* Jesus fucking christ. Not everyone subscribes by YOUR definition. I go by mine, someone else goes by theirs.

Fuck off, you fucking asshole.

We have enough religion wank between the various Theists.

Except definitions of words are not like opinions...you don't get to have your own.

Yes, especially when your own beliefs involve fibbing about entire groups.

In this instance? Yes. You do.

Cause when it comes to religion, the definition changes all the fucking time.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-01 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
No, an Agnostic is a person who is honest enough to admit that they don't (and probably can't) know, and aren't going to commit to a pretense that they do.
otakugal15: (C:)

[personal profile] otakugal15 2013-09-01 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Better said than what I said. Thank you.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-01 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless that agnostic pretends that atheists claim to have certain knowledge that gods don't exist, in which case they are no longer honest. Most atheists are also agnostic.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, at this point we should probably stop and sort out exactly how we're defining our terms.

To me, if you firmly believe that there is no God and act as though your belief gives this proposition the weight of fact, and anyone who believes in a God or isn't sure is a dumbass for not agreeing with you, you're an atheist. If you tend not to think that there's a God but acknowledge that it's just your opinion and you could be wrong, you're agnostic with atheistic leanings. If you refuse to commit to an opinion one way or the other, you're just agnostic.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-09-02 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
To me,...

Translation, "in the opinion of someone utterly ignorant of modern theology and atheistic philosophy, but unwilling to shut up about it."

... if you firmly believe that there is no God and act as though your belief gives this proposition the weight of fact, and anyone who believes in a God or isn't sure is a dumbass for not agreeing with you, you're an atheist.

Nice beautiful little men and women of straw. Have you considered opening up an Etsy shop?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
You are being awesome all up and down this thread. Thank you.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-02 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. Have you considered renting out that beautiful high horse of yours by the hour?

If you disagree with me, fine, disagree with me. Correct me. Cite a source you consider definitive. If all you're interested in doing is hanging around sneering about how sophisticated you and and I'm not (or that perennial favorite, how it's 'not your job to educate me,') then go jump in a lake. Your thoughtful commentary might be worth my time but your snobbery definitely isn't.

Okay, definitions. Atheism is the position of lacking a belief that any gods exist. Agnosticism is the belief that certain knowledge of whether or not any gods exist is impossible to obtain. These positions are compatible. Note that I did not make up these definitions; if I were not on my phone, I would provide you Wikipedia links.
