damn straight. you tell a little girl who wants a Spiderman costume that little girls can only be princesses, yeah that's wrong. But if you tell a little girl who wants to be a princess that she shouldn't because (insert reason here), then that's equally not cool.

plus, most of the princesses are pretty darn kickass. even the non-badass ones are great, frankly...Aurora and Snow White's powers are being really nice and talking to animals, which is in no way a sucky think to be.

I work at a Disney park

I would bet anyone ten bucks that a lot of those people who hate on the princesses online will dress up/meet/buy something related to the princesses while here, because they will let their repressed inner child out and for a moment, remember that very thing, OP.

Hell, I'd bet fifty.

Hand over that fifty then.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
You'd lose that bet with me. Never did give a damn about the Disney princess phenom. I would buy something about Thumper or Eeyore though, once I convinced myself the overpriced trinket was in fact worth it.

I'm very in touch with my inner child. She was always disappointed when Belle put all that jewellery on and didn't go on an adventure more than a few hours away from her village. It's less about inner child than how well they've sold you their brand, and they were a lot less systematic about it when I was a kid.

This. My nephew LOVES the princesses, and thank goodness his parents are absolutely supportive of him and let him get the dolls he likes and play how he likes (his favorite is Belle!), but he gets side-eyes and derision from some extended family members and neighbors. It's upsetting.

When my brother was 4 or 5, he would playact as superheroes regardless of gender.

Like, he would run a short distance away, spin around wildly for a minute, and then run back; when asked what he was doing he would say, "I'm turning into Wonder Woman," in a total 'duh' tone of voice. This was after we got the old Lynda Carter series on DVD and were all watching it together. XD

I love disney but I don't get the obsession w/princesses specifically. I always liked Tinkerbell more anyway, I thought she had the prettiest dress out of them all.

I'm not particularly against Disney princesses, but I don't think it's harmless fun either. It reinforces gender stereotypes and makes a girl think that her greatest aspiration in life is to wear a ballgown, a tiara, and marry the prince.

Secret 8 - Disney Princesses

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-09 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Belle, Rapunzel, Tiana, Aurora, Snow White and Ariel in their Princess dresses from the Disney Princesses franchise. They are all extra sparkly and smiling.]

I think some people take their hatred of Disney Princesses too far. Let the little kids have their magical escape. It's harmless fun; there's nothing wrong with wanting to be a princess.

It's always kind of bugged me that Rapunzel is always shown in marketing with long blond hair instead of the hair she ended the film with. Getting rid of that hair was pretty critical to her story, even if she was cooler when she had it.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be a princess or liking pink.

There's a lot of wrong with that usually being the only option.

sparkle sparkle motherfuckers

I'm sorry I can't contribute more than that, I just love the glittery dress redesigns.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
This. People don't give kids nearly enough credit for their understanding of reality. When I was little, if I said I wanted to be a princess, my mom always explained to me that in real life, being a princess is a job with a lot of work that's not very fun at all (Princess Diaries came out when I was a pre-teen, so that was probably helpful haha). It never messed with my enjoyment of Disney princesses. Even now, I love them--not because they're princesses, but because they stand for things like bravery, intelligence, independence, kindness. They can be extremely badass, all the while wearing fancy, pretty clothes with fabulous hair.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
The Disney Princesses =/= the Disney Princess line. Each of the princesses has her own story, her own personality, her own little this and that which makes her a unique character. The Disney Princess line casts all of that aside, reducing the princesses to smiling faces and sparkly dresses. The line tells us that it is not the princesses' stories or personalities or abilities that make them great and worthy of emulating; it's their prettiness. That Mulan is included despite having no claim to any throne (always in the dress and makeup she wore to the match-maker's, at that) only reinforces the message that being the princess of your story is more important than being the hero.

I don't hate the princesses, I just hate the damn Disney Princess line because the characters are nothing like the originals.
They're dumbed down and boring.

I would never tell a kid they can't be like Mulan or Tiana. I just hate the franchise.
