Same. Like I understand why you can ship them but for me there are to wrapped in each other. Personally I always loved Rei/Minako more as a f/f pairing in SM.

Rei/Minako was my first big OTP, so I feel you.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I never really saw them as that wrapped up in each other, but I suppose looking back I can understand that interpretation, even if I disagree with it.

[personal profile] accidental_zombie 2013-09-28 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
One example I can think of is in one of the ova, where Michiru is willing to take the chance of destroying of the world in order to save Haruka because 'a world without Haruka isn't worth living in' (not exact quote). However I really liked that ><;;;

Congrats. You've matured to realize that homosexual couples are no more special than straight couples. Homosexuality has become normal to you and normal is bland. So many people never learn that and still think that gay couples are OMG! SO MUCH MORE AWESOME THAN STRAIGHT COULPLES1111111111. (Personally, I think this thinking is creepy and fetishizing.)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
OP says she's a queer girl. Was she fetishizing... herself?

I've never been that big om this pairing either and I always felt like that was bad for the same reasons OP does. I actually always paired them off with other characters when I use to write SM fic (Michiru/Setsuna and Haruka/any of the Inner Senshis).

...Really? They both get episodes that focus on their relationship with others -- Michiru pushing Ami not to be afraid of her own strength, Haruka and Usagi hiding out from a daimon together, and so on. They're not a part of the Inners' close-knit circle, and definitely love each other most, but that doesn't mean it's to the exclusion of all others.

As co-parents to Hotaru, they clearly care about her and want to raise her well. Haruka's rivalry with Seiya is partly about a desire to protect Usagi from being exploited when she's vulnerable. And like all the senshi, they're both the kind of heroines who are ready to die for the sake of the planet, which is a pretty strong mark in the "unselfish" column.

I like them as a couple, but I don't remember them being that wrapped up in each other... although I don't remember the anime that well to be honest, I'd have to rewatch it.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I always just brushed that off with a kind of "eh, they're young" mentality. Young relationships are often borderline obsessive with this "OMG TRUE LOVE IS NEVER LEAVING EACH OTHER'S SIDE" mentality. It may not be "healthy", but it's also a very normal stage of romantic development. I'm sure if they showed these two still together as adults their relationship would have matured a lot more and they'd be better adjusted.

I don't really remember the anime that well because it's been so long since I've watched it, but I never got that impression in the manga. They seemed to care more about the well-being of Earth first and were willing to sacrifice themselves for it. Haruka was also seemed to quite enjoy flirting with Usagi and Michiru never reacted with jealousy. As far as young couples go, they seemed rather mature, and had their own lives and motivations outside of being senshi.

I've always loved Haruka and been kind of meh on Michiru. Haruka/Usagi was my guilty pleasure pairing.

All I remember about these two is that when the show aired on American TV, they were presented as cousins or something, but would still get all touchy-feely and stuff. Someone finally told me that they were originally a couple but that got changed with the American dub but they weren't going to change the actual animation and the whole thing became hilarious.

I'm a Sailor Moon fan and I don't care for them either. They're fine as their own characters, but I don't like how they're presented as ~perfection~ either. Not to mention I find what they did in Sailor Stars to be rather unforgivable, and all for nothing to boot, and I'd be PISSED if I was Usagi.

Yeah, sometime in the last decade or so, I realized that I don't need to buy or ship stuff with same-sex couples I don't like.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe this is true during the S season, but I always they weren't really a couple during the the S season. The SuperS special is arguable, really. Sure, Michiru says that bit about a world without Haruka isn't worth living, but who's to say she didn't know the dude was bullshitting? Michiru's a troll so I wouldn't put it past her.

I found their dynamic drastically different during Stars and particularly saw none of that unhealthy co-dependency. Sure, they pulled that stunt during the final battle, but that was more like... they knew had were about to do something awful in other to have a shot at beating Galaxia and that they were awful for doing it, but at least they'll go to hell together. I dunno, I felt they could be allowed to be selfish about that given the circumstances, especially considering how fucking devastated Michiru was when their plan failed.

But, yeah, if that's how you see them, OP, then that's how you see them. Just my two cents.

I think obsessive love fits the themes in Sailor Moon, and I'm fine with that kind of romance in general if both parties are consenting (and one isn't like a creepy stalker or some shit).

Although I don't remember them being particularly selfish about their romance. They did act as outside agents with their own agenda, but I always viewed that as less about their romance, and more about who they are and their particular role as Senshi.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-28 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Can you actually name specific moments in the anime or manga that shows how their love is selfish? All I can think of is the SuperS special (already been mentioned) where Michiru says that "without Haruka the world isn't worth saving". Either than that I'm drawing at a blank.

I remember wanting to like them because Uranus looked like what I imagined a grown-up version of me would look like, and I was always a tomboy.

But yeah, once I got the episodes with them in it, they really seemed like kind of aloof jerks.

I don't understand you people..

(Anonymous) 2013-09-29 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Is this just a Western thing or...? Because it sounds like you don't understand what love even is? Love is (insert the whole world here)<(insert the person you love) so yes, it is selfish. So selfish that if push came to pull, you'd sacrifice the whole world and yourself for your love.

People like to point out Michiru's line about a world without Haruka, but. I point to Deathbusters and the cathedral, where she and Haruka were ready to die if it meant the world was saved. :x

Or you know, they were a bit standoffish because they were treated a little differently because they were lesbians. Michiru was sort of known as icy towards people which is pretty normal for a 16 ish year old lesbian who feels way different from their peers. Also they were older by a couple years than the inner senshi so that's a huge life experience gap at that age. Haruka had a car in the season where Usagi was 14/15 so... They're not going to be bopping around with girls that much younger on the regular aside from being sailor scouts together.

Alienation of a lesbian couple in the world can create that kind of environment where they withdraw from straight people- especially a gaggle of girls that think you're a man (Haruka) the first time they meet you and sometimes act a bit strange around you.

Idk they seemed more carefully represented in the manga... But I think you're comparing apples to oranges here. There's a lot of extenuating circumstances for a lesbian couple- and there was subtle & not so subtle homophobia directed towards them on the show. The motorcycle episode where a guy's angry about Haruka beating him because she's a woman comes to mind- and there were a few instances where Michiru purposefully concealed their relationship when Usagi was about to naively out them.

Idk I'll ship them to the grave tho.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
That's one of the things I really liked about them. They were incredibly wrapped up in one another, and could come off as obsessive - but they were also, iirc, sixteen and had been dealing with potentially world-ending shit with no support structure aside from each other for a few years. It was a very human, very realistic response to the circumstances they were in.
