I rarely play full evil. Maybe I should.

I wish I could play evil/bad karma characters. I don't even play evil characters in the Sims, and, like, the worst they do is steal candy from babies. I made a kid cry in Fallout 3 the other day and it made me sad in real life.

Given how hard Hawke failed as a hero, I guess the whole game makes more sense if s/he's evil, and simply does not give a fuck.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I prefer the chaotic neutral ("snarky Hawke") approach. :D It makes me feel less sad about the fact that the story basically sets Hawke up to fail from the start.

yeah same tbh, i can't help but pick the comedic/charming options most of the time. i feel like most of the events were kinda out of hawke's power anyway, particularly the final straw quest, but at the same time it was really fucking obvious anders was up to something shitty and stupid. god he makes me so mad dont even get me started but hawke really hecked up on that one.

orsino and meredtih really screwed the pooch too tho. basically everybody was incompetent as fuck except kinda sorta varric but then again the whole story is told from his standpoint so who even knows

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
The thing I love most about SnarkyHawke is that nobody laughs at his jokes and the general reaction is ">_> Shut up, Hawke!".

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually never play evil (even when I try to build a character specifically to be EVOL, the most I usually manage is being an ass with dialogue actions but still doing quests the 'nice' way). Until DA2. Frustration over having been 'good' being utterly useless, I played a utter bastard Hawke and it was the MOST FUN, UGH.

The sheer amount of people I butchered, oh, it was glorious.

In fact, it was so much more fun that I kind of assume that that's how it was meant to be played.

i can honestly see this esp. from a mage hawke perspective because then the storyline makes a lot more sense imo.

I wish I could play evil or asshole characters easier. I can play renegade and make the occasional snarky comment or morally questionable decision, but I don't like hurting innocent people physically or otherwise if I can help it, even if they aren't real.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
That's my plan for my next play through. I can't seem to make my Lady Hawke be a jerk so I'll have to use BroHawke instead (Fenris...sorry if you end up back as a slave). I have to finish a DAO campaign with an elf ranger who hates humans, won't do the dark ritual, and chooses Loghain over Alistair (haven't decided if he becomes king or will be exiled).

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, betraying Fenis and selling him back to Danarius is so fucking sad, it's hilarious. I don't mean that it's badly done (Fenris's facial animations, stab me in the heart!) it's just so well done, and you feel like such an asshole, it's great.

Especially if you're in a romance or rivalmance with him. Just, AWWWWWWW YEAHHH EVIL.

I want to play full-on renegade characters, but I always end up with snarky ones who occasionally push people out of windows (that part in ME still makes me laugh).

I don't think I could ever play full-on renegade Shepard. I just. it would rip my heart

but some of the renegade interrupts are THE. BEST. THINGS.

(I've yet to play a DA game, but I have the first one on Steam, just haven't started it. Looking forward to it and I wonder if I'll feel the same way about playing this character...)

I could never go full renegade, not even with my worst character. I'm too much a wuss and some of the options in ME3 are brutal. That said, some of the renegade interrupts are fucking amazing, including the window one and a certain shanking in ME3. (That one was renegade, right? I seem to remember playing as a hard-core paragon but being unable to pass that one up.)

Hell, some of the paragon interrupts are good for that matter. (Thane's loyalty mission had a good one.)

Aaaand this is why I play renegade Shepard. :) I haven't gotten to DA2 yet, but I'm pretty sure Hawke is going to be evil.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Snarky Hawke was the fucking best. I don't really care for evil, but snarky Hawke was legite hilarious. I love snarky!male Hawke, just trolling the fuck out of everyone.

My favorite scene:

(post gay sex with Fenris)
Fenris: I don't know if I can do this.
Hawke: Is it too much? I know it's... A LOT to take in!

win.

I suspect the third act is less a piece of shitty gibberish if you try to fuck everyone over all the way through.

I have to fight tooth-and-nail to pull off anything worse than a neutral/opportunistic Warden (which is gonna make my planned evil Warden a real challenge), but my first Hawke was aggressive all the way through and it was so much fun! Especially ragging on Anders and antagonizing Fenris for the rivalry romance. Like someone said above, it makes Hawke's inability to affect most outcomes in the game's story a lot easier to swallow when s/he doesn't actually care about - or contributes to - Kirkwall going to hell in a handbasket. I need to plan a completely evil Hawke, too, I bet it'll be even better.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
I tried so hard to play an evil Warden but I suck at playing evil. But I think I might actually be able to do it with the city elf origin - going the route of the brutalised kid who manages to get into a position of power and uses it to see the world burn instead of helping people might actually be fun!

lol this is usually how I play Dishonored. I mean, I like happy endings and everything but I also like killing a lot of the enemies in the most ridiculously gruesome ways and if you want a good ending then you have to seriously limit the amount of unnecessary violence you inflict

see i can't be mean in bioware games unless someone REALLY deserves it, like that asshole during thane's personal quest, the one you have to interrogate. i'll punch him right in his shitty face.

but i can't go full evil or even remotely close to that. i grow so close to the characters - particularly the companions - that bringing them to harm or otherwise "wronging" them isn't fun to me, it actually really fucks me up. i watch youtubes of the "evil"/renegade options sometimes though, just out of morbid curiosity. that whole bit with fenris being sold back to danarius was some psycho shit, lemme tell you. and shooting mordin? beating the hell out of legion?? i can't deal with that.

i'll beat the hell out of some little kids in skyrim tho. literally couldn't care less when it comes to bethesda games. idk what it is about bioware that messes me up.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I agree totally. I don't like to play evil in games, especially when I feel close to the characters. I really integrate myself, so I feel insanely guilty if I do something bad. Plus, I don't like killing - bear with me, I know it's a game, but - if I can give a bad guy mercy, I'd instantly pick that option. Especially in Dragon Age, even when most of the characters were pretty messed up and kind of assholes in their own right, I still loved them.

Skyrim is just a different type of game, though. It's not a character game. I wouldn't even call it a story game. It's a beautifully developed fantasy world that you can immerse yourself in, but the characters are just not there (and probably not meant to be).

For me, it's also a matter of pragmatism.

In DA2, I just couldn't betray Fenris - for romance reasons, because I'm too nice, but also because my Hawke was a squishy Archer and Fenris is so damn effective at bashing people's heads in!

In DA:O, I was constantly annoyed at Wynne- but she was the most effective healer in the group, so I couldn't kill her off.

I wouldn't call the Legion sequence evil. You only get the good ending to that one if you make both the right influence checks and the right sequence of choices through two games, and if you don't manage that, you have to basically decide which of the two shitty choices is marginally less worse. The outcome if you take the other option there is also pretty gut-wrenching.

(Unless there's another instance where you can beat the hell out of Legion that I'm not recalling.)
