the white/Hispanic mixed race relationship is a far more diplomatic representation than just making everyone white, or the opposite. We show two races that very much exist in our country joining in a romantic manner, like a peace treaty. How is that not wonderful?

I don't have a dog in this fight, but just for the sake of clarity, a lot of social justice is oriented in social theory, and a lot of *that* tends to ignore intent. You're making an intent argument; it's true there is no conspiracy theory where everyone consciously decided "fuck it all, white Cecil only!"

But institutionalized -isms are also just patterns, not necessarily the product of good or bad intentions. So when fans ask, you know, why is it that (even unintentionally!!) a character who can be any race or color at all is consistently coded as white, they aren't necessarily accusing others of bad intentions. They're pointing out that this fits a pattern of "white" as default/neutral.

There is nothing inherently wrong, individually, with Cecil as a white character. There is something troubling about a trend where an otherwise nondescript character is drawn as white by default, and where problematizing this results in backlash.

Also, I realize I'm probably either going to come across as either a SJW/SJW-defender or as some "rational" exception to the SJW rule. Whatever. I recognize that a lot of Tumblr users go way overboard and don't actually understand the whole "institutionalization vs. intention" argument I'm making beyond it being a bumper sticker slogan. But it's worth pointing out, just in case you want to have a good faith conversation about an -ism in the future.

To be fair, I think the certain white with third eye Cecil mostly became popular from a popular artist's headcanon and spiraled from there. It became so popular a lot of people started doing. it I'm not saying that white-default thing isn't involved at all, but I believe that is the only origin of the trend.

Yeah okay, but if anything, I've seen an equal number of white Cecils and PoC Cecils. I always just thought that when imagining characters and all, people are going to be imagining the people they see the most. Besides, the character is a completely blank slate. Sure if everybody drew Cecil as white, there might be a problem, but that's definitely not what's happening right now.

This is not an exaggeration. Now granted, I'm not omniscient and have not seen all aspects of the fandom. But the parts I have? NEVER.

i'm only tangentially familiar with this fandom but isn't the actor who voices cecil a white guy with blond hair? so it's not like people are just making him white for the sake of making him white, i've heard a lot of people say their headcanon is that he looks kind of like the guy who voices him and i thought there was a decent amount of fanart that reflected this as well.

Did we not just have a whole thread on a different secret discussing this very issue? Maybe you missed it OP. I think it would be helpful and informative for you to go back to that and read through it. (Not intending to be mean, just helpful.)

Agreed.

I write a lot of WTNV fanfic, and every fic I write has a different Cecil. I see him differently all the time. Or sometimes it's more convenient to make him something else for the plot. Or it opens him up to a more interesting backstory. Or I just want to throw some tentacle smut in for the hell of it.

Bottom line, Cecil is whatever the fuck you want him to be, or not (or her!), and everyone bitching about it really just needs to get over it. I am so tired of that aspect of fandom, I just want to squee over an adorable couple and wonder what the man in the tan jacket's true intentions are with people. (and luckily the group of WTNV fans I hang out with are like that. Find your niche, stay out of the tags, and have fun)

SJWs have a good point in that we automatically assume Cecil's white mainly because 'White' is considered the default in our society while all other races are considered aberrations. They also make a good point that POCs are extremely underrepresented and that's a problem.

However, the fact that some very VOCAL people went around screaming 'RACIST!' at people who drew/wrote/imagined Cecil as white sort of hurt their cause pretty badly. No matter what they were intending, that's bullying and didn't make any good change.

No, you're not racist because you HC Cecil as white. Draw and write White Cecil if that's what makes you happy. However, it's worth examining WHY so many people think of him as white. And it's never okay to shit on anyone who draws/imagines Cecil as a POC of any stripe.

(On the other hand, if you think CARLOS is white then you have a case of the Derps and need to check yourself before you wreck yourself)

In my opinion, it had to do with Cecil being, above all else, a voice. He's not tall, not short, not fat, not skinny; he is just a voice on the radio. We don't even have canon pictures of him!

Because of this, the fandom has the unprecedented freedom to imagine him in whatever form(s) they like. Unfortunately, the old "If you don't like my idea YOuRE A CUNt!!1!" mentality makes it extremely difficult for some parts of the fandom to accept that everyone's 'Cecil' is different from another.

I have more of an issue with the idea of him having a third eye (because he was NOT at that area when that was occurring, he was reporting on the radio -- plus it would have been something Carlos pointed out) and wearing sweater vests in the dessert. ON THE RADIO. He canonically wore a tunic and fuzzy pants as a classy outfit, he doesn't seem like the hipster type.
