I hope if you have kids they are not going to be hanging out with other kids. People who don't get their kids vaccinated need to be forced to take some science lessons.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Quick question: if my kids aren't vaccinated but the other children are, what do the other children have to fear from my kids, exactly? And since their vaccinations should be keeping them from catching anything spreading, why should I be afraid for my kids to be around them?

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Because some kids legit cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, and because why should you get to be the exception and everyone else have to vaccinate? And if not everyone else has to vaccinate, then there's an infection risk.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see here's the problem: I don't believe in meddling in the way other people raise their kids. Pretty much everyone vaccinates right now, that's the reality. I'm not going to go around telling people what to do with their children. But I'm not subjecting my own to that kind of risk unless there's a pressing need, such as a real-life active infection breaking out again.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

such as a real-life active infection breaking out again.

Yeah well thanks to people like you, my area is filled with measles warnings because people havn't been vaccinating and this really sucks for the babies who are too young to be vaccinated.

Herd immunity only works for those who can't be vaccinated yet when those who can DO

so thanks for contributing to reactivating a nearly dead and lethal disease

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Came to say this! The measles were nearly eradicated in my country but because of dwindling vaccination they are back. If a baby got measles it can get an chronic encephalitis years later and this is lethal.

What kind of risk?

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
you don't wanna meddle with other people's kids but you're all up in their marriage choices

okay

Wish =/= meddle.

Cause I'm sure you'd never pressure anybody and keep your opinions to yourself every time.

I don't believe in meddling in the way other people raise their kids.
Really? not at all? Not even if the child in question is being starved or beaten or living in neglect? I suspect that you would interfere in those cases because it'd be in the best interests of the child and society... like vaccines. Children aren't considered property any more and, frankly, the parents' ability to be the be all and end of child-rearing ended about the same time school became mandatory.

Pretty much everyone vaccinates right now, that's the reality.
No, it's not. There's a major and alarming rise in children catching easily preventable childhood illnesses because parents no longer remember how horrible small pox, measles, mumps, and rubella are. About 40% of the children in my state are unvaccinated and it's a horrible and unnecessary risk to each and every child, but especially to the children who can't be vaccinated.

I'm not going to go around telling people what to do with their children.
Even if you walk in one a mother beating her kid with a shoe? No, really, I walked in on that once. And you'd best believe that everyone involved told that mother what to do with her kid... including the state.

I strongly suspect you would've told them too. Making blanket statements like that is ridiculous.

But I'm not subjecting my own to that kind of risk unless there's a pressing need, such as a real-life active infection breaking out again.
It's not a risk, despite what voodoo-science has told you.

First of all, risk involves major joint swelling, seizures, and partial paralysis. I have seen all of these personally as a result of vaccination.

As for the rest, you are what terrifies me about the US nowadays. You use the worst possible examples to justify not allowing parents to have rights in raising their kids. It's people like you who get kids pulled away from loving families because their parents decide to homeschool or spank once in a while. I don't know how old you are, but I grew up when the government was grabbing kids left and right for the smallest things. I lived in fear of being taken away from my parents because they chose not to subject me to radical surgery for an issue that resolved itself.

You believe that the village should be raising the child? I've seen the village and I'm keeping my kids the hell away.

"major joint swelling, seizures, and partial paralysis"

Know what is worse than all that?

Death.

You were supervising all these vaccinations and therefor know for sure that all these risks were happening? Wow!

When I read all this I'm really happy that homeschooling and spanking kids is forbidden in my country. I especially love the "loving family and the spanking once a while" in one sentence.

AYART

Parents actually have a great many rights in raising their kids and it's really hard for the state to take a kid away from his/her parents. No one is taken away for "the smallest things" - although those "small things" may have been the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak. Kids aren't taken away for being home-schooled, they are taken away sometimes for being "spanked".

Medical issues are trickier. If it's a matter of judgement, it's unlikely to happen. Id a kid has something like cancer and needs chemo to survive, that child should be given the necessary treatment to survive, even if that means taking the kid from his/her (usually unreasonably religious) parents. (Seriously. St. Jude's, for example, will care for and treat a child with impoverished parents. Cancer treatments for adults, however, are harder to come by.)

And yeah, I genuinely and whole-heartedly believe that there are situations in which children need to be taken from their birth parents. And shouting, cursing, unkind (and usually illogical) implications about me or my personal life, or threats won't change my mind on that.

Oh, so, thanks to YOU, should an outbreak of Whooping Cough pop up (which has also been getting more and more recent of late), I will run the risk of catching it because, guess what, I can't get the vaccination because I'm allergic to it. And any future kids of mine have a 50-50 shot being allergic as well.

So fuck you and you fucking ideology.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Because your entirely unvaccinated five-year-old could easily transmit a deadly illness to another child, whose parents fully intend to get him/her vaccinated when he/she is old enough to vaccinate. For example, all of the infants who die of chicken pox, whooping cough, measles. The number of child deaths from easily preventable diseases is rising in the U.S. because of the number of unvaccinated kids. And then there are the kids who are allergic to the vaccines and thus are at the mercy of your kid's germs.

Your desire to rely on herd immunity is untenable, mostly because of all the other lazy parents who want to do the same thing.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
But where exactly are my hypothetical children getting these diseases? Like I said, if I saw an active outbreak of something like polio in proximity to my kids, I'd probably take the chance and vaccinate. Otherwise I'd rather not risk my child ending up in a wheelchair from the vaccine, as happened more than once in the school I went to.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's always better to end up in a wheelchair from polio!

I don't think there will be a big announcement of an active outbreak, especially in the beginning where it begins in small circles and it could be already too late then.

And there is always the chance to become infected - people are travelling, the world is big.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
you do know about incubation periods right

by the time the alarm is raised about an outbreak chances are it's spread too far

hey, honest question, do you live somewhere where they sometimes buy shitty old/cheap vaccines instead of the good stuff and they get some people sick because they're so shitty (because they use metals/materials they shouldn't, etc.)? cause that happens here too, can relate there :(

Why should other people have to vaccinate their kids to protect them from your kids?

How do you know all the kids your kids are around are vaccinated? You don't. You can't tell by looking and a child could be contagious before starting to show symptoms.

Because you might not be the only one who has decided not to vaccinate and not vaccinating reduces the 'herd immunity'
