I don't believe the vast majority of vaccines are necessary, and strongly suspect that many of them have a better chance of doing harm than good.

Oh, and I'm that bastard you all hate that believes that Jewish people should give it serious thought before deciding to marry and procreate with non-Jews. I'm not even saying don't marry non-Jews, just I wish so many wouldn't just brush mixed-marriage off as nothing.

I hope if you have kids they are not going to be hanging out with other kids. People who don't get their kids vaccinated need to be forced to take some science lessons.

Quick question: if my kids aren't vaccinated but the other children are, what do the other children have to fear from my kids, exactly? And since their vaccinations should be keeping them from catching anything spreading, why should I be afraid for my kids to be around them?

Oh, I think you should consider starting to giving a fuck. Maybe a century ago there were enough of us to keep the culture alive, but I'm sure you've noticed that we were practically wiped out? Your heritage is a part of you no matter what you say. Maybe part of it is Tay-Sachs, maybe part of it is being chosen to be a light for the rest of the world to follow. Look into it, what's the harm?

If it's the autism thing, that's been pretty thoroughly and repeatedly debunked. One of the main instigators of that scare even lost his license because his research supposedly supporting that hypothesis was riddled with ethical violations and fraud.

The three I have already seen in my life are seizures, sudden onset arthritis and partial paralysis (that one was from a polio vaccine).

Look dude, here's all I know:

1. I had all my childhood vaccinations, and I've never had measles, mumps, whooping cough, rubella, polio, smallpox or tetanus, and neither has my vaccinated child, and I am goddamned grateful for that fact.

2. I HAVE had chicken pox (as an adult) and let me tell you, it sucked big-time donkey balls. The vaccine was introduced in the U.S. after I was grown up, and if I'd known about it and known what a nasty disease it is for an adult to have, I'd have gotten that shot in a fucking heartbeat.

3. Regular outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases are known to occur in--you guessed it--populations that refuse to vaccinate. That's a good enough reason for me.

Having said all that? I think it's reasonable to be a bit leery of brand-new vaccines that don't yet have a long track record of safe use, especially if they're for diseases that don't have severe lingering effects and/or high mortality. I haven't gotten my daughter the HPV vaccine, for example. It's too new, reportedly not as effective as some other vaccines, and there've been an uncomfortable number of reports of negative reactions. But I look into it from time to time to see if they've changed the formulation or re-evaluated the numbers as more people get it.

Thank you so much for giving me a reasonable non finger-pointy response.

1. I'm not vaccinated and I have never had any of these disease either. (This has been vaguely attributed to long-term breastfeeding.) I am also grateful for that.

2. Shit if I hadn't had the chicken pox by the time I was a teen I would have asked for the shot myself. I know it's far more harmful in adults than it is in children and that it's still prevalent. I'm even considering a shingles vaccine after seeing my grandmother's case.

3. My population at the moment is very into vaccination, so I feel relatively safe until a vaccine-resistant illness springs up. I want to see the issues closer to home before I decide whether to vaccinate and for what.

I agree with your last paragraph %100.

I don't believe you know what vaccines actually do.

Look, here's the thing about vaccines: they protect you from the specific (dead) germ injected in your body, because its presence spurs your body to make the proper antibodies without actually giving you a really debilitating disease.

You know what it doesn't protect you from? Mutated versions of that same germ.

Do you know where mutated versions of that germ come from? Idiots who don't get vaccinated.

If people catch the disease in question and are fighting it after the symptoms set it, before the antibodies catch up, the treatment involved can and does produce antibiotic resistant germs. This is the reason the flu shot is a thing every year, because different strains of the flu become a problem because of the previous flu season.

You are endangering literally everyone around you by not getting vaccinated, regardless of whether they're vaccinated or not. How you don't realize this, I have no idea.

I believe strongly in vaccines. I am so grateful that I live in an area where people immunize their children so that herd immunity continues to protect my infant until she is old enough to receive all her shots.

It's so disheartening to me that whooping cough and measles and other diseases that we had all but eradicated are making inroads again because of parents who refuse to vaccinate their children.

That guy who wrote the study with the falsified evidence linking autism to vaccines: They stripped him of his medical license and Lancet (I think that was the journal where the study was published) retracted his study, but I think he should have to do jail time as well.

The thought that my kid could die or even just suffer through a disease she should never have contracted because somebody down the road doesn't believe in vaccines makes me terribly angry.

Of course vaccines have side effects, just like any other medical treatment. But you'd better fuckin believe they are necessary, unless of course you'd like your kids to suffer and/or die from completely preventable diseases.

Please do not bring your need for religious purity into other people's love and happiness.

I have the best parents in the world who taught me about both religions, who taught me that love should be your only decision for being with someone, not someone else's approval or disapproval.
