Agreed. And I'm a Joss Whedon fan, but I just don't give a fuck about the Avengers movie or the SHIELD show. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. turned out to be a particular disappointment since I had really hoped that my preference for TV over movies would shake me out of my apathy. The only one I give a shit about on that show is Ming-Na. Everyone else is so plastic.

They picked her because she was in the previous Iron Man 2. I am assuming she was the most famous female spy in the Marvel verse, hence why she was in IM2.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
They also picked some rather ugly actors like Jeremy Renner and whoever plays the Hulk. And the guy who plays Coulson isn't just boring looking (which is fine for a character like that) but people seem obsessed with him.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Geez, kid. Older does not mean ugly. I'll give you that Renner's face takes some time to love, but Mark Ruffalo is a very attractive man.
chardmonster: (Default)

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-10-29 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure what's more confusing here, the fact that you think Mark Ruffalo is ugly or the fact that you think Bruce Banner is supposed to be particularly attractive.

...I actually think it works?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-10-29 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Mostly because like sex and sexuality was a huge part of character in the comics (or at least the popular impression of her character) and yet it seems to have been relatively minimized in the movie, which I kind of like.

*shrugs*

I mean, I'm still hoping for a Carol movie and all, but still I think this works okay...

(Anonymous) 2013-10-29 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's why your argument that Black Widow is a poor choice for the "token girl" is invalid: You think that role was a token girl. Maybe watch things before talking shit on them.

Black Widow is one of the best parts of the film though. She's super well written and well developed, and she's a badass without falling into the STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERRRR archetype. So really if that's your main reason, it's your loss.

Who would they have chosen instead of Black Widow? (Ignoring that they set her up in Iron Man 2.)

[personal profile] elaminator 2013-10-29 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk, I haven't read much with Widow in the comics but to me she seems like a great character. I also think movie Widow is every bit as competent and cool as the rest of the Avengers and think Scarlett plays her well. *shrugs* She needs her own movie, tbh. Everyone says this, but a Widow and Hawkeye team up film would be fantastic too.

Obviously you don't have to watch the movie and it isn't for everyone, but... I don't see why Natasha would ruin the experience for you. She fit in perfectly.

Like others have said, she was in IM2 and is a badass character, so they brought her into Avengers.

I always think that one lady is better than none. Yes, the Avengers needs more women, but it sounds like there will be more female presence in A2. So that's good.

Don't hate 'cause she's the lone female character. Be disappointed if you want, 'cause there weren't more.

I liked her, but that film was so bland to me. It was just another generic action film, to be completely honest, and nothing about it would compel me to watch it again.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2013-10-30 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
If you didn't like the others, why are you even worried about this one? So you don't like them - whatever.

Black Widow kicked ass, she carried over nicely from the IM movie (where i was totally in love with her at first sight, anyway), and i can't wait to see more of her in Winter Soldier.

So, there - my good opinion balances your bad, the world spins on!

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I basically refused to watch the Avengers because 1) I'm not a fan of superhero movies and 2) It flooded my dash on Tumblr like a tidal wave. I eventually caved in and watched it on Netflix, just because it was finally free and I was a teeny bit curious as to what the hubbub was all about.

I really wasn't impressed, just as I expected.

But, Black Widow ended up being a pretty darn good character. In fact, she was the one I enjoyed the most out of the whole cast.

I haven't seen the movie either and I really don't know when I will. No real reason, I guess? =\ Aside X-Men, I'm not really a Marvel fan - maybe that's the problem? (Thor was cool though.)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's just a matter of opinion really, no one's 'cool' or 'edgy' for not liking Avengers and no one's a sexist just because they don't like Black Widow, I thought the movie had some good action but was overall mediocre, and BW was boring as hell, but then, the only movie I liked leading up to Avengers was 'Thor', and the only character in Avengers I didn't dislike other than Thor was Bruce.

... and I guess I still have a soft spot for Loki, seeing as I liked him so much in the 'Thor', even though he was a really mediocre villain in Avengers the like carried over. Not that anyone here really cares about my opinion, but in the long run none of this really makes any difference to anything. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
Worse she's a Whedon token girl. So lots of focus on her feet and she stands in that listless head to the side kinda way.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You know who I'd have loved to see in Avengers? Misty Knight.

But I can't see her working with SHIELD, so...
