and as worthless as you all

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Probably true. If you're conservative, people just dismiss you outright. If you're a conservative or moderate liberal, they try to convince you you're wrong and "fix" you. As evidenced above.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, this. I'm pretty socially liberal, but fiscally I tend more conservative, and man do I catch shit for it.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
well i mean you're never not going to catch shit for having political opinions, that's kind of the nature of politics in a pluralistic world containing many distinct human beings. what you can reasonably ask, i think, is a modicum of consideration, or at least some attempt at something that could reasonably be turned into a dialogue.

That's because you really can't separate the two because fiscal conservatism plays into oppression (class, race, gender, etc.) and conservative social politics.

There's fanatic people at both ends, so way to be in the middle, OP!

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
There's fanatic people and idiots everywhere, the fact that one is in the "middle" is not one that guarantees that one is a moderate. It just means that your political views are relatively normal in a given society, not that you behave reasonably and well.

therightfangirl will welcome you with open arms. when they're not whining about obummer, they're complaining about how liberal fandom is. you could probably go vent there.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
And here's me thinking fandom would be so much easier if American politics were left out of it completely. It's especially annoying when they take over fandoms for things that aren't even American.

Or we all even watching the same show??

Sometimes I feel like internet liberal is different from... rest of the world liberal. That or like conservatives, there's more of a divide.

I consider myself basically liberal, if more fiscally moderate. I believe that people need to be held accountable, and I'm sorry, but I don't always feel my fellow liberals believe that. Someone on my flist once said she felt it was privileged for people to think she should just take any job she could get. Um - why? Yeah, it sucks having to work a job you'd rather not have, but that's what a lot of people do. That's what I do. I could quit, I could live off my parents and/or the government until I found the perfect job, but I'm not going to do that. But thinking that means I'm Rush Limbaugh's golfing buddy, even though I despise the man. And that's the problem.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, do I feel you, OP.

I find it especially annoying because I grew up in a conservative Republican household, and have already changed so many of my view so drastically that my mother has probably dug herself halfway to China spinning in her grave at 10,000 RPMs. I don't think I can stretch much further left without breaking something.

Huh. I'm a moderate liberal, and I've been in fandom for about 15 years now, and I've never once "caught shit" for it. I've only ever entered political debates when I wanted to.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
I feel that if you insist on drawing a stringent line between 'liberal' and 'conservative' -- or apparently, Democrats and Republicans -- you're never going to get anywhere. This is why bipartisanship seems so doomed to failure in this country. Politics are much more complex than the party lines would have us believe; even the people within each party often can't agree with each other.

Sure, at election times we have to make a choice and then it feels like it's a 'lesser of two evils' situation -- but the rest of it? There are issues, there's how you feel about these issues and what you do with those beliefs, and that's that.

Though I will admit that there are some issues I personally cannot compromise on. They are usually social in nature, and are generally polemical. Most of the time, I can approach a political issue from an academic angle, and that means I'm willing to look at both sides, examine the opposition's reasoning, and even agree to disagree. But there are certain things your opinions of which really say something about you as a person. This doesn't mean I can't be civil to you if you disagree with me, just that I know myself enough to accept that I won't be able to get along with someone who holds such views, on a personal level.
