but their point about the existence of historical and long-lasting systems of racism and oppression is not really incorrect, nor is the point that some people have historically benefited from those systems and others have not, nor is the point that the current economic and political systems of most Western countries are the consequences of their long histories, and in substantial respects the consequences of colonialism and imperialism in their histories. you can't ignore that history when its consequences still live today. insisting on the recognition of that history is not the same as saying that one skin colour needs to be put down or demeaned; it's a description of how the world is.

Well, here's the thing...the African slave trade would not have succeeded so well if it hadn't been for other tribes that were more than willing to sell their enemies to white people.

So, by your logic, their descendants are also not innocent in the matter.

Those descendants, of course, being those who did not benefit from the process in a systemic, long-lasting way, and who in addition would later be subjects of European imperial states during the colonial period in Africa.

Yeah, most of the descendents of those tribes already got their comeuppance when they were enslaved in turn, and when the whole continent was turned into a clusterfuck due to European powers slicing up different parts of it for their amusement. So, what went around came around. When white Westerners finally get their turn at that table (which they will, because haha fucking humans), then I guess black people can let bygones be bygones, while the Chinese are making all our lives hell.

I'm poor, so no, I don't have an ivory life of luxury. Plus my ancestors are either from Russia exclusively or were Irish immigrants who came over long after slavery ended. So I don't give two fucks about feeling 'guilty' for something I had zero part in, mmkay.

That's really not how white privilege works. Having white privilege doesn't mean people think you've got class privilege or any other kind, or that you don't have bad days. It just means that, being white, you've benefitted from stuff at the expense of other people, or just, like, not had to think about things that other people have to struggle with daily.

It's quite similar, really*, that everyone from a middle class background and higher doesn't ever have to think about what it's *really* like to be poor, or they take things for granted that are not part of your reality, ever (a good example of this would be the other day, I was stressing about juggling money to make bill payments, and a friend suggested I just ask my parents for the money. LOL no, they're poor too).

* This doesn't mean all privilege always functions exactly the same, but it's a good 101 version of what "privilege" generally means.

No, I'm not responsible for something someone else did just because I'm directly descended from him. And I am, in fact, descended from some truly awful people. But I can't go back in time. All I can do is try to make things better for the future.

Are you kidding me? I could power half the Western world using white guilt as a fuel. It's kind of hilarious because it doesn't actually fix anything (since first, people made to feel guilty tend to get defensive rather than repentant, as the internet backlash against social justice demonstrates, and second, feeling guilty isn't the same as being useful), but it's still really fun to bully people you've felt bullied by for whatever reason, because people are petty.

I think with all these special grants for black students and such in the USA, white people're underpriveleged. I haven't lived there so I may be mistaken, but this is how it seems to me from the media.
