I honestly feel Brave is more feminist, but I enjoy that the two leads were females. A lot.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I envy people who can feel that way about Brave. To me it's just, holy rape culture, Batman.

Feminism = fighting? I haven't seen this yet, and I think it looks interesting. I don't know why people are up in arms about it...but please don't get into any fist fights, or internet brawls, OP! It's not worth it and won't help (you or your argument).

As long as one of those issues isn't how they whitewashed the Sami, your probably fine.

I think it's possible to be disappointed that Disney added two more white princesses to the line-up while still acknowledging that this movie did an excellent job when it comes to female representation. And I think it's possible to acknowledge that it's quite a feminist movie without telling the people who want to see more princesses with darker skin to shut up and stop complaining. I wish I could see more of both.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. :) I adored this movie and agree with OP that it was probably the most feminist thing Disney's done yet, but as with everything, there is always, always room for critique and for more inclusiveness.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's the thing, though. People who refuse to accept that Sami aren't 'European Native Americans' won't ever see the positives of the movie. I've tried bringing up the positive female aspects of the movie, and have been shot down every time or just plain ignored.

Here's the thing: I'm not sure the international market wants more nonwhite princesses from Disney because they have their own media. Disney is western and they want western stuff. That and, frankly, a lot of the world is even more racist than the US. This includes countries of color.

That and expecting full representation from one of the most conservative media franchises on earth is a losing game. It's fucking princesses, why are you going there looking for progress? It's like me hoping Jeff Dunham is going to add puppets that aren't racist! It's like hoping One Direction writes a song about Gloria Stinem!

This; I absolutely adored Frozen and thought it was absolutely wonderful, but I'd love more diversity in the Disney princess line-up.

I feel like personally I'm not blaming Frozen but kind of holding it separate. I'm glad that Frozen exists because I thought it was fantastic on both a filmmaking level and on a feminist level, but I wish that there was more diversity. I think when you view it like "if Frozen wasn't there we'd have a movie about a POC princess!" is when people get angry.

I think this is a case of you just can't please everyone. Upon hearing the news that Disney wants to do another story with a Polynesian princess, all my Hawaiian friends on FB were up in arms about Disney "appropriating their story." So they presumably would actually be happier if Disney stuck with white characters.

I think that Brave and Lilo and Stich were also pretty awesome and feminist.

But yeah, Frozen was pretty great in terms of telling stories about women.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
They're a pretty good trifecta.

TBH even with the three day marriage, I thought PATF was pretty feminist too.

Secret 5 - Frozen (2013 animated film)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-18 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a promotional image of the CGI animated film "Frozen", featuring Anna and Elsa standing together and smiling. Anna has light red hair and light skin, while Elsa has light blond hair and light skin. They both have long hair done in braid hairstyles are both wearing fairly fancy clothing. Elsa is summoning snow.]

Whatever other issues this movie may have had, (And it did have some issues, I won't claim that it's perfect.) I think that this is the most feminist movie that Disney has ever made, and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise.

Frozen is one of my favorite Disney movies, but I think Lilo & Stitch did better in this area. There were more than two named female characters, and they were more realistically proportioned, more racially diverse, etc. Frozen treats its female characters better in merchandising, though, I'll give you that.

Frozen was really good, but I would suggest that Lilo and Stitch and Mulan are also credible challengers for the title of "most feminist Disney film."

Why is it a contest? I thought the purpose of feminism in pop culture was to turn out a lot of it to make the idea visible and accepted, not to hold rounds of semi-finals, finals, and medalists to make the list of movies that get feminist cred as short as possible.

Brave (this one is Pixar, but since she's in the princess line), Lilo and Stitch, and Mulan all top it in that regard in my opinion.

But it still had a lot of great feminist points.

I may not agree but I'd rather not fight over it. We can just think different things. I am so down for that.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Does calling it feminist even mean anything? No one can agree on shit and most regular people just take feminism to mean something so diluted it could be anything.

People are still going to complain that the characters are white despite the next Disney films being about Japanese and Polynesian people. I think there's a third but I'm not sure. Despite Disney going out of their way in a lot of cases to change races and include others. No. Frozen is a travesty of justice because tumblr is psychotic.

I'll be seeing it on the weekend, let's see how it goes. I'm not feeling too optimistic as the little-o and I didn't like Tangled or Princess and the Frog. If it's utter crap and she's wiggling 30 mins into it, I'll take her to the Meatballs 2 movie instead.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
From what I've seen, Frozen is a good feminist movie but a mediocre movie in general. It subverts a couple of tropes, but the characterisation is pretty cliche, the character designs are pretty lazy (but the backgrounds are gorgeous), there's one good song, it's just not *good* the way it could have been. I think my views on media are pretty different to the Tumblr crowd, because I look at it through the eyes of my young daughter. Something can be feminist as hell, but if the story and characters don't capture her imagination than she won't internalise the message. I'd rather have an imperfectly feminist good movie than a better-at-feminism mediocre movie, and I think Frozen falls into the latter category.
