Secret 1 - Hannibal (TV series), Will Graham (character)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-19 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the character Will Graham, as portrayed by Hugh Dancy, from the TV series "Hannibal". He is a man with light skin and short dark brown hair wearing eyeglasses and looking a little forlorn.]

I hate how so many people in the Hannibal fandom think Will is a clueless dumbass because he misses so many obvious clues and didn't suspect there was something 'off' about Lecter. Of course the clues seem obvious when you're sitting at home watching the show unravel from an omniscient perspective.

I bet most people who insult him would be no more wiser if they were in his position.

The understatement in calling Will 'forlorn' is hilarious to me.

(It's an accurate description of how he looks in this particular shot, but still.)

I try to go by how they look in the screen-capture alone, since a lot of the time I'm not familiar with the characters/fandom.

I'm glad I've brought hilarity into your life, though. C:

Let me just say, Transcriptanon, that I LOVE your way of describing facial expressions. It's always so accurate in a quiet and somewhat cute way.

But Hannibal rhymes with cannibal! That's why I reported my friend Bill (rhymes with kill) to the police six months ago; and they've already dug up eight bodies from his backyard! IT WAS SO OBVIOUS!

Also, Hannibal's from EUROPE, home of the ANTICHRIST. CASE CLOSED.

People also forget that Will was battling a severe neurological disease. And that Hannibal was introduced to him as someone who could help him psychologically not only by Jack but by Alana (who he trusts greatly) so Hannibal had the 'this is probably not a bad guy' cheat code. And really, we see him killing people and cooking human-meat. The others don't see that. He's generally well-spoken, well-dressed, and impeccably polite to those around him. The closest hint Will probably got before the last episode or so that there was something off was with that one kid who was harvesting organs and Hannibal jumped right up in the ambulance to shove his hands in that dude's chest.

But yeah. Will isn't dumb for missing it. Hell, everyone missed it and they don't have neurological damage as an excuse. (Miriam Lass doesn't count)

LOL wow. I haven't seen any dumbass! Will fanon per se, just broke loser Will, which makes no sense, either. I blame his wardrobe.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I personally find Will's wardrobe fascinating. It seems at-odds with his profession, and does as much, in terms of character development and class signifiers, as Hannibal's does. But his clothes don't get as much attention *because* they're not as expensive or pretty.

I will forever love the person who observed that all Will has to do to get out of every charge is point out that he can barely put on clean clothes, let alone clean up a crime scene, and that if he'd been anywhere neear the victims they'd all be covered in a fine layer of dog hair.

I don't think that it would be obvious to the other characters at all; but I DO think Will, with his gifts, *might* have seen through it more if he hadn't been sick.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
lol hannibal fans.

y'all think you're sooooo superior to the superwholock dumbasses, but you're really just as obnoxious and insufferable as they are in a slightly different way.

This happens in a lot of books/movies where one character is left out of the loop but the audience isn't. For some reason it's particularly hard for some viewers to grasp theory of mind when applied to fake characters.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I could make the OP's argument for a lot of characters that get unfairly maligned for being "stupid." I particularly hate it when people calling the characters dumb for not figuring things out yet are spoiler hounds and have more information than even most of the fandom. Of course everything is "obvious" when you already know what's going to happen.

It's like the LotR movie when Legolas goes "They're taking the Hobbits to Isengard!" and "A red sun rises, blood has been spilled this night." and everyone was like DUH. CAPTAIN OBVIOUS! because we, as the movie goers, are omnipresent and already know that.

I shake my head so damn hard a people who can't separate what the audience know with what the characters know.

The "obvious" things he missed regarding Hannibal and Abigail were also because he didn't want to look at them in that light, subconsciously or whatever. Especially Abigail.

Still, this is definitely not one of those shows where it makes sense to facepalm because everyone is blind because the writing forces them to be.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
It kinda skeeves me because a lot of it is not victim blaming, per se, but still in line with that "how could you let him/her do that to you?!" that people do to real life survivors of awful people.

Plus, like, Will is fucking brilliant, obviously, but he's also mentally ill, was introduced to Hannibal by someone he trusted, and seriously, it is so much easier to view things abstractly than it is when it involves people you know/trust. When it's X random killer who must be identified, that's one thing, but when the bad guy is someone you already know and previously conceptualized as a different type of person, it's difficult to make that paradigm shift, especially if you're also in the process of questioning your own mental health.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
you do know that's a joke/meme thing, right?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Very true.

Rather off topic, but I thought I'd ask anyway

[personal profile] gondremark 2013-12-19 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
Silence of the Lambs left me very angry and frustrated and more squicked than scared because of what it said or implied or whatever about transgender folks (I'm trans myself, so I'm easily pissed off by that).
Hannibal seems like a good creepy show, but if I start watching it am I going to run into the same preposterous and infuriating crap later on, or will it just be the good scary mystery/character study/drama it seems to be advertised as?

[personal profile] purpleseas 2013-12-19 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's possible they'll never get the rights to Jame Gumb, but if they do, I imagine they'll put as much thought into that depiction as they do everything else. Gumb wasn't intended as a truly transgender person in either the book or the movie, but the movie's imagery was obviously a lot more powerful than a couple lines of dialogue (and a deleted scene I wasn't aware of but wikipedia says is on the dvd). They've already modernized and switched up a lot of things to bring the source material out of the 80s (particularly with diversifying the cast) and make this elaborate alternate backstory work, so I would think avoiding bad connotations or implications would be part of that. I couldn't say exactly what will happen later, but the motives of the killers on the show tend to be more abstract and creative than in most other crime fiction I've seen. Or in the nonfiction, even. Bryan Fuller has said he has no interest in depicting rape, which is part of what fuels a lot of serial murder, so it tends toward more far-out, interesting stuff. I wouldn't really call it mystery because most of the focus is on the effects the murders and their perpetrators have on the characters rather than the procedural element (so much that some people get disappointed at not learning more about murderer x or y), so the character study and drama is very strong. They say Season 2 is going to be a wilder ride, but Season 1 is a slow psychological burn. Can't recommend it highly enough, and feel free to ask about anything else you want to know.

Only once have I actually called characters stupid, because yes you have to account for what you see that they don't. Basically, it was the Task Force in Death Note right after L's death. I just can't justify any of what they say and do.

Huh, I've never heard anyone say that. Everyone pretty much loves Will. We must be in different bits of the fandom.
