The SlashFangirl Gaze (tumblr)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
So, there's this longwinded post going around about how showrunners and writers are being assholes about female gaze, blahblah Sherlock, women know what 'male gaze is', and so they need to stop disrespecting them and whatnot.

I find this to be a bit, eh, crazy? These aren't real people. If the writers are not writing these characters to be gay, if the actors are saying they aren't playing them that way either, then it isn't there. It is what it being written/acted. You can't say, "No, they're totes canon because I see this to mean this!", when that is not how it was intended, period.

Your thoughts?

No problem!

I don't really get why "gay" has to be a special or weird thing or what's so wrong with leaving it up to interpretation (I pretty much read all characters as somewhere between 1-5 on the kinsey scale, it's just my default way of thinking), but I also don't care about Sherlock or the opinions of most shippers, so... I guess those are my thoughts?

I guess it's because they're demanding it be made canon-canon, when well, that won't happen. Because it's not there.

eh

I don't feel like saying "it's not there" over and over is really necessary but whatever

From what I understand (as someone who is seen it but not in fandom), the fact that Sherlock is straight also "is not there."

Eh, as far as I'm concerned, "canon" is the material itself. I'm not really concerned with Word of God or anything. So unless the character - not the actor - is clear about their sexuality (verbally in a way that aligns with their actions) I'm going to assume there's a possibility for bisexuality. it's not canon, no, but it also wouldn't be "canon" that the character is 100% straight.

I don't have a horse in this race, but I do think only the material itself is canon, and that characters don't have to be specifically gay to possibly be gay (or bi).

I don't really understand if that's what the post was about, though, you weren't really clear in your first paragraph...

I'm... puzzled.

Possibility 1: Someone involved in the show -- definitely including the actors, maybe also someone higher up -- is intending to convey desire. Female fans are accurately identifying desire. The people involved in the show are lying about it.
Possibility 2: No one involved in the show is intending to convey desire, yet female fans are identifying desire. So,
2a: The actors are actually desiring each other?
2b: Desire is being conveyed without any intent or relation to the truth. <--Which is to say, that expert identification of desire has false positives.

So they are saying that either the showrunners are lying or the actors desire each other?

Also, I find it disturbing that the writer is arguing that UST signals between characters in shows are the same as warning signs given by threatening men.

I think I basically agree with you. The product on the screen is artificial -- whatever is there, somebody put there.

I don't think it's 'signs of desire', I think it's two hot guys that work together are hot to some women. (Some) women will always think the two hot guys are gay, no matter what the context of the show is.

They pretty clearly think they're seeing 'signs of desire'.

But I don't think that post is saying they are totes canon. It's just about interpreting the directing choices and body language.

Personally if I was going to fight for better representation of the female gaze in media, respectful statements from the writers of Sherlock would not be my priority. Shows condemned for queerbaiting have had writers acknowledge subtext and nobody was too excited about that.

I guess I just don't personally think society is that progressive. Every guy on every show is Bisexual? I doubt that. Plus a lot of really hardcore slash fangirls think anything that isn't, "yes, you're right, they're in love!", is insulting/disrespectful. Look at the producer who came out and said Dean wasn't Bisexual. He was mobbed to the point of having to suspend his twitter for a while. Slash fandom can be...a scary and angry place, and I can understand why some writers/show runners would rather say, "No, no, no, lalala"

My problem with this is that their "evidence" for "canon" gay undertones in their ships is usually a two-second glance that they've turned into a gif and slowed down to make it last twenty seconds. I've watched many shows where fans insist, vehemently, 100% convinced that two characters (who just happen to be their ship, it never happens with, say, two side characters) are blatantly in love, but the canon material just doesn't hold up. To anyone watching as a casual fan (or just someone who isn't over-invested), it's simply not there. And their behavior when it comes to defending their ship can get so downright nasty... it's no wonder people don't take their claims seriously.

I do understand what they're trying to say, but I don't think using OTP "evidence" is a good way to go about their point. (Disclaimer: I have plenty of ships myself, in numerous fandoms, and I'm well aware that this doesn't apply to a lot of fans. It's just that the people who are the loudest and most insistent are also the pushiest, to the extent of being cruel or making people uncomfortable.)
