Well

Not that I disagree, but you could just try and ignore all that stuff.

Yeah. I'm not gonna lie, it's pretty easy to not know a thing about creators.

Yeah, this. I know that a ton of 'creator' type people are on twitter and such re: Supernatural, but i don't even read Jared's twitter feed. Not necessary.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Some fandoms, where the creators themselves are taken as the word of god, that's not easy. You might as well blacklist 95% of the fandom.

That's what New Criticism is for!

Really, unless someone is VERY adamant about something I disagree with and are putting money towards that, I generally attempt to ignore a lot of what goes on, or at least attribute it to everyone saying stupid shit sometimes.

Secret 1 - Twitter, creators of media

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-28 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is several silhouettes of short-haired people talking with each other. There is a blue background and the white bird logo of the website "Twitter" behind them.]

I wish I could take creative works on their own value, without the creators at all!

Seriously, I think Twitter is the absolute WORST thing to happen to fandom. Ever. Tumblr runs a close second but there are more actors/writers/personalities on Twitter (the fans rule Tumblr).

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I prefer to enjoy the characters and the show and really want nothing to do with fawning or getting to know the actors. I appreciate the hard work and all, but just because I like a character they play doesn't mean I'm going to like them. And all too often an actor or writer will say stupid shit that will worm its way into my brain and take some of the shine off of my enjoyment of the show. Because they're just people, and people aren't perfect. But still, I'd rather there was more of a divide.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
This is exactly what I was trying to say. Although sometimes it's the reactions to the stuff they say that can be just as bad, IMO. (See yesterday's threads, frex.)

There are a few foreign actors whose twitters I like to check on from time to time because otherwise it's hard to find stuff about them.

If you don't have a twitter though, I think it's pretty easy to avoid said creators, isn't it?
dreemyweird: (austere)

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2013-12-28 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the opposite.

But that's probably because for me, the personality of the creator is of utmost importance, and I stop liking their stuff if I see that they're a dick. Actually, I normally don't like their stuff in the first place (because the dickishness never fails to find its way into their works), but seeing them being dicks reinforces my intuition.

And if the creators are good folks, then, why, I'm happy. Plus, I love hearing everything they have to say. I'm not a fan of Death of the Author (unless we are talking formal academical analysis, in which case that's the norm).

Don't follow them on Twitter then? I can see some people linking to creators twitters on Tumblr or the such, but besides that, if you don't follow them, you don't have to deal with them.

However, I do think Twitter has shown the "bad" sides of some creators and actors. It's a shame, but we do put them on pedestals. I can see how that can negatively affect your love of a show.

What I hate about it is that some creators decide that because they can ~explain things away~ on Twitter that they don't have to put certain plot points into the shows/movies. If they wanted something seen or known, it should have been shown rather than told to the audience via social media.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree absolutely.

I don't care about the creators. I never have. The less I know about them, the better.

"You can just ignore it."

With some fandoms, it's not that simple. With my fandom, they are all over Tumblr, and most forums, deifying the creator. I'm not even touching twitter.

It must suck to not be able to separate the creator from the work.
Now, what about works in which the creator's views don't reflect themselves in their work?

Everyone is a dick about something. Everyone.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I hate when webcomic artists decide to put their commentary on the same page as their actual comic. I've had some good ones ruined by knowing how big a douche nozzle their creator is.

I too rather dislike the trend. I don't my credit going where credit is due, but I don't really want to know what most creators are up to.

That said, this idly reminds me that I was spoilered about Dumbledore's death by the front page of a newspaper, the day after the book came out. Sometimes you cannot avoid something when it comes at you from the side.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree. I follow 'famous' people -writers, actors- and I tend to get to the point where I think they are insufferable. Specially show writers.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems like the problem goes both ways too. If a famous person has a blog and a loyal, easily swayed following, and they post shitty things that they would have otherwise kept to themselves, it can cause problems not only in the disappointment of fans, but in the people who start acting or thinking according to these ideals.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2013-12-29 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in agreement. For some, it's easy to split the art from the artist. Other times, the artist's views are so pervasive and "in your face", it's... just not really possible to not disconnect one from the other. And that's kind of sad.

At least the actors/voice actors I follow seem to be acutely aware that "just because you can say something, doesn't mean you always should". Although someone like, say, James Arnold Taylor (Obi-Wan's voice actor in Clone Wars, among many roles) does let his personal beliefs show in a few Tweets (like recently he's gone on a jag about Blackfish/animal cruelty at Seaworld, which I personally had no problems with), he doesn't always do it in a way that's beating you over the head with it, and his feed is otherwise very uplifting and positive.

tl,dr: It's all in who you follow, really.
