Kinda sorta OT:

I'm fine with people interpreting her song that way they can headcanon Elsa is a lesbian. Headcanons all the way!

But I'm starting to have a problem with people who insist that is exactly what was meant.
I think what she's singing about can be interpreted in quite a few ways. I've been a real anxious person, who always did what her parents told her all her life and I could relate to that song perfectly, too.

I don't tell you that your interpretation and how you relate to the song is wrong, so don't tell me mine is.

Yeah, I mean, it would have been pretty and adorable had they actually given her a gf or what have you, but...they didn't? And the song was about her turning her back on civilization, not joining it as her true self. Not directed at OP of this secret, but I think this is going to be the next thing that people decide is canon when it's actually fanon and start all kinds of fandom wars over. Heck, I've already seen several people on tumblr insisting that her being queer IS canon.

And the song was about her turning her back on civilization, not joining it as her true self.

This. It's not "coming out" when you isolate yourself on top of a mountain in your ice castle.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The song was not about isolating yourself in an ice castle.

Thank you so much. I have a very intense connection to the song, but "coming out" isn't it, and that is just as valid -- neither is canon or actual subtext.

I've seen it interpreted as a metaphor for both being closeted and hiding a mental illness and I've been having fun picking out the parts of Let It Go that feel like it fits more with one than the other. It's definitely not a perfect 1:1 comparison but there were times when I almost started tearing up during Elsa's story because it hit so close to home, so I understand where people are coming from when they get defensive.

And basically bash other people's feelings.

I'm talking about the impulse, not the execution.

This is one of those things where I've never seen what's being complained about. I've never actually seen someone insist that their headcanon was canon. What I have seen is a lot of people going "well I guess you're free to think that if you want but remember it's definitely not canon" in this weirdly emphatic way when the person they're talking to has never claimed that it's canon.

I definitely read it as (being an applicable metaphor for) hiding a mental illness. And really, when you look at Elsa, she is not an entirely healthy young woman at that stage of the movie.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)

There's nothing wrong with your interpretation. The song is about ridding yourself of the expectations and demands of others and being true to who you are and what you need. Coming out as LGBTQ is one way doing that, but there are many others, and it's equally valid to apply the song to another kind of personal liberation. I don't think the "canonical" meaning of the song is anything other than what we saw in the movie - Elsa choosing her magic powers over society and its expectations.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I have NEVER seen people say that this is exactly what it meant.

Jesus Christ, people, does it bother you that much that some gay or mentally ill people choose to personally let this song speak to them? Straight people have 99% of popular songs be about your love and plights with the opposite sex already.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It bothers me that it's claimed as a "gay song" when it works for a million of different things.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I never seen it be "claimed", just personally interpreted.

It's so hard that ONE song is getting a queer interpretation from people, I know.

It always really weirds me out when people project their own issues onto characters. Like, I can understand finding a character who has canon similarities to you and empathizing with that, but I will never get this whole concept of deciding to interpret a character in some way that has no basis in canon whatsoever just so that the character will be more like you. It just seems like thinly-veiled self-insertion to me.

So far I've seen more people complaining about other's having this headcanon than people claiming it as canon. Which is 0, btw. 0 people saying it's canon versus people saying they wanted to interpret it as such.

So stop taking everything as an attack. Talk about your headcanon like everyone else does, but stop being a shit over it

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
But every Frozen secret, there are plenty people who claim it's oh-so-obvious.

You must not visit Tumblr a lot because there are some people over there that are 100% sure that she is gay in canon and if you dare to disagree then you are a dirty ciscum homophone.

I'm gay and I feel the same way, to be honest. Hiding your identity and feeling free when you no longer have to is kind of a universal feeling. It reminded me of how I felt when I came out and a bunch of other experiences I've had.

What makes this song so beautiful is that everyone knows this feeling, everyone can relate to Elsa. It's not exclusive to a single sub-group, it's human to its very core.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
You, on several occasions on this board, are the only one I've seen insisting canon. I've never heard anyone demand that Elsa is gay - everything I've heard is just that she is very possible to interpret as gay, Let It Go speaks volumes to the coming out and gay experience, and it's possible (very possible) that these parallels were put in on purpose.

Sorry it bothers you so much that Elsa could have been written as gay, or that fans interpret her that way.

It doesn't and I never said so.
