This comment looks like it took extra effort... and you posted it in the wrong thread. Such beautiful failure, I have to smile.

True, but...*cough, points upward*

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That sucks. I hope in real life you can use protection and feel reasonably confident enough in not getting pregnant to enjoy sex. (If you're hetero, that is.)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I would think that too if the fic doesn't mention any protection (I don't read sexy fics in general, so it doesn't happen). Do you think that even if it's made clear that they use protection? Like I know nothing's 100% safe, but still...

I get this feeling when I read sex scenes where the heroine is obviously not supposed to get pregnant. Like, the author isn't even considering the possibility, the lack of condom notwithstanding. And, though I don't have a real pregnancy ~squick (I'm cold towards the idea of pregnancy and am asexual+childfree myself, but usually it doesn't gross me out, not in fiction), I constantly find myself thinking about the heroes' thoughts regarding this one-time thing. Are they thinking about the possibility of pregnancy? Why not? Is one of them infertile? Are they idiots? What will they do if she does get pregnant? It distracts me from the actual writing...

So, yeah, I totally get your sentiments. Contrary to the common (among amateur writers?) view, the descriptions of sex do need to be some degree of accurate to be good.

I constantly find myself thinking about the heroes' thoughts regarding this one-time thing.

I always get tripped up by that in stories/media that have a historical or historical-ish setting with poor forms of contraception and a significant stigma toward single mothers. Like...do they really think this is a good idea right now?

This. I mean, I don't need a graphic description of any (if any) contraception that's used. But some indication as to whether or not it was even considered by the characters, or that they're aware of possible consequences, is actually pretty important to me. How the potential of pregnancy is handled can say a lot about a character and their society.

Is... is this a REAL THING? O_O

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
If protection isn't used or at least sparingly mentioned all I can think about is pregnancy and possible spread of diseases or mess. Just takes me right out of the scene. So I kind of feel you, OP.

I just always headcanon that the woman has a really regular cycle and tracks it really well and knows she isn't fertile atm (unless otherwise specified in canon.)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I automatically headcanon tubals and vasectomies for everyone.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I got this thing in my arm style birth control, no babies and no condoms. (in a long term monogamous relationship) Getting pregnant would suck if you didnt want to OP but there are lots of ways to prevent babies. Especially in fiction hahaha.

Condoms?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Does the anxiety lessen at all if it's specifically mentioned that there's some sort of birth control in play, or does the miniscule failure rate with correct use still bring out the "Do Not Want"? Just curious.

Sincerely,
Your polar opposite who writes smut on a regular basis.

I feel like a jerk, but I have absolutely no patience for pregnancy squicks that extend to the notion of het sex. I mean seriously.

Eh, if it's modern, I just assume they took care of the condom or whatever and it wasn't mentioned. Which is pretty lazy, yeah, but I used to read a lot of fic written by young, easily embarrassed fans, so.

I guess it's just sort of the default to assume that, unless it's a major plot point, no one will get pregnant/STDs/end up in any serious circumstances related to sex.

[personal profile] dazzledfirestar 2014-01-26 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
It seems to me that, assuming you're in a modern setting fandom, headcanoning the use of the pill/shot/etc or a vasectomy wouldn't be that hard...

Or, if you really like a ship and it bothers you that much... why not seek out fic where it's not PiV sex?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, because real people in the real world always think about birth control in every moment leading up to sex and while engaging in sex. Nobody's on the pill precisely so they don't have to think about birth control during sexytimes.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
uhhh, if there's no condom mentioned i just always assume the pill??? i take it, all of my female friends are on some form of birth control, uhhh... it isn't too far of a stretch??

i dunno. i'm super weird about pregnancy too but it's FANFICTION. who cares. no consequences.

Me, too, anon. I blame it on one too many romance novels where the heroine realizes the next morning that they didn't use a condom, oops, teehee. I just can't imagine falling into bed with a guy you've just met and not even bothering to consider it.

(The one that made me throw a book at the wall was the paranormal romance where she has a vision that her birth control failed, so she assumes that already happened and just gives up on condoms all together, boinks like rabbits, and then has another vision revealing that nope, she didn't get pregnant until she gave up on the condoms. And she's totally okay with both the pregnancy and the suddenly developed vision powers.)
