sort of reliable Myer Briggs test?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
My counselor gave me some information on places that do vocational testing, but I'd rather get the idea online. Does anyone have a link to a good online test for these. I always seem to land I_T_ on them, and it's a little frustrating to land in the middle on these tests.

And what about your MBTI indicator, FS? What's your's, and do you think it fits?

There are lots of them! Shouldn't be too hard to dig one up?

I always test as an INTP. And the description seems about right. *shrug*

I just did it and got INTJ. No idea what that means and the description is pretty vague, but it called me a mastermind and now I feel like a supervillain.

INFJ! Very, very me.

I generally test as an ESFJ. It's funny in that it's about 90% accurate, but the remaining 10% is really off-the-wall. It helps to remember though that everyone has differences and you can't fit the world into a discrete number of boxes, even if it's 16 rather than 3 or 4.

The MBTI isn't actually all that great for vocational testing & employment purposes. There's issues around how it's an either/or test, rather than a spectrum. (You're either Perceiving or Judging, etc.) There's other tests out there, such as the Big Five, that have a lot of research backing them, and are considered to be more accurate. Multiple tests & interviews will give a more accurate result than just the one test. /rant

If you're going to do vocational testing to make a big life decision, it's best to get someone to do the full MBTI, rather than the shortened online one.

But hey, personality tests are a lot of fun!

My type is INF_, I tend to be either a P or a J depending on how grumpy I am.

Re: sort of reliable Myer Briggs test?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a INFJ/P depending on the day really. I think I'm starting to lean more over to a J whereas I was more of a P before though. I think it fits me rather well, as do the people who knows me.

And sorry, don't know any good places:/ You can also read up on the "missing" letters to see if you can see for yourself what fits you best if the tests don't give you a real answer.

According to the test I took just now I am ENTJ

What does that even mean?

Edit: At least both the career paths I am thinking of pursuing is recommended for my personality type, who'd have thought it... One would think my personality had something to do with which job I want.

*high five*

It fits me pretty well too, even if based on what I am reading we don't come across as the nicest of people. At least we can lead them to the greater good?

INFP, though I'm close to the line on T-F.

You sound like my SO! He tests INFP all the time, and it suits him, but he's more analytical and less touchy-feely than what seems to be the stereotype.

I test reliably as IN__, but am on the edge with regard to T-F and J-P. INTP sounds the most like me, though.

INFJ and no idea tbh.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I usually end up as some kind of INTP, although very close to being an either-or on T/F. And I think it's more or less pretty accurate.

I'm an INTP/J, and I hang out in some MBTI groups. So here's what I can tell you:

Almost no one is perfectly "in" their MBTI type - everyone has at least one letter where they're closer to the middle than the end. For me, that's the P/J bit there. These are not meant to be absolutes, but merely a general indicator - they are a nudge in a helpful direction, not a compass or a map. (Or, for another analogy - most people are dominant in one hand, even as they generally use two/both...though some people are also ambidextrous).

However, most people do fit more firmly into the overall four temperaments, which are the Rationals (NT, or _NT_), Idealists (NF, or _NF_), Artisans (SP, or _S_P), and Guardians (SJ, or _S_J).

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the tests - they're a good place to get you started, but honestly once you start to learn the traits attached to each 'place'/letter, it's easier to effectively just 'self-diagnose' and go from there.

In terms of getting started or quickly dipping your toes in, this is a good place:
http://www.myersbriggs.org/my-mbti-personality-type/mbti-basics/

This is a more solid but quick run-down of the two sides of each of the four categories:
http://psychology.about.com/od/psychologicaltesting/a/myers-briggs-type-indicator.htm

And to help with the "self-diagnosing":
http://www.teamtechnology.co.uk/tt/t-articl/mb-simpl.htm

If you want some grossly oversimplified questions to help you get onto the right direction...

For the Information category (N/S, or the first blank): When trying to gather information for something, do you like to focus on what is right in front of you ('hard data', the obvious, etc), or do you tend to extrapolate a lot and 'fill in the blanks' with your imagination? If you lean towards the former, that's S-heavy, but if you lean towards the latter, that's N-heavy.

For the Structure category (P/J, or the second blank): Do you prefer to plan ahead extensively and settled details, or do you prefer to leave your options open and go with the flow? The former is J, the latter is P.

Re: sort of reliable Myer Briggs test?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Is there any particular reason why those four groupings tend to be the categories people fall into?

Re: sort of reliable Myer Briggs test?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-02-11 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
As far as I know, it's mostly to do with that second category and relevancy. The second category is how you take in information.

If you are a Sensor - you work best with hard data, facts, and "what's right in front of you" - then more relevant to your personality will be what you do with the data you get, which is what the last category (P/J) is about. Because you focus on 'hard data', how you arrive at conclusions is not as important, so for SP/SJ types, that T/F in the middle is not as important.

If you're an Intuitive - you like to extrapolate things, explore ideas, etc - then a lot of the information you intake is 'imagination' (re: filling in the blanks with stuff from your own mind rather than looking primarily towards hard data). In that case, how you arrive at those ideas is more important, which is what the third category (T/F) is about. Because you are more theoretical, how you arrive at those conclusions is more important than what you end up doing with those conclusions.

In short, the last three categories are more about who you are as a person (how you generate ideas/how you think/"how you do", etc.). The first category, I/E, is more about how the personality derived from the other letters applies to the world and interacts with other people, so it's not all that relevant to the temperaments.

This is why I tend to tell people to not do the test. Just focus on the categories and see which side of each category you drift closer to, then stitch your results together.

This might help:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1f/MyersBriggsTypes.png

The I/E does tend to be the hardest to pin down. One possible way to look at it: after you've been at a party/gathering for a while, are you ready to go home and relax, or are you revved up and looking forward to spending more time with people? (Assume you went into the party well-rested to begin with).

The P/J one is a little easier: when making plans, do you prefer to have concrete plans and settled details, or do you like to leave your options open?

I'm sorry I can't help you. I've done several, tho, and they mostly add up. I'd advise you to look for more than one test so you can cross-confirm the results.

For what it's worth, Anon, I usually test an INFP! Depending on my cynism levels, I also get INTP scores sometimes. I think they do match how I percieve myself to be, which is key for all these tests: Remember they reflect a lot on your perception of yourself, more than on how others might percieve you.
