This is David Starsky and Kenneth Hutchinson. Starsky is the one on the right with the hat and the dorky sweater-thing, Hutch is the one on the left with the 70s hair and the black turtleneck. Remember that now.

LMAO I sporfled sunflower seed shells all over my keyboard :D. I have TOTALLY done this type of thing with other shows that I was aware of without ever seeing.

If it makes you feel any better, half the one-off characters seem to have the same problem as you. ;)

This is actually a weirdly appropriate mistake to make, though, because people mixing up or combining their names is a pretty common running joke throughout the show. It was like the whole universe was going "no1curr what your name is, you define yourself almost exclusively as "_____'s friend" and you don't have any identity to speak of outside of him, so why should we take the trouble to pretend you have any?"

Man, I loved my preposterously entwined, co-dependent boys...

Okay, I'm curious -- in what way were you "aware" of the show? Like, did you just see mentions of it here and there alongside mentions of other '70s TV shows and stuff? Or did you actively think about it or read about it, but mistakenly mix up the names? Or do you just mean you didn't know which one was which and never thought to figure it out?

I'm just gonna say that I was somewhat aware that the show existed (albeit vaguely, mostly because of the movie from a couple years back), but I was totally blown away at how huge the fandom was at the time after browing Fanlore a while back.

Makes me wonder how popular it would have been had it aired today...

The fact that the show itself hits almost every fandom and fanfic kink, particularly the ones very popular at the time like hurt/comfort and epic guy love, and then ratcheted it all up to about five times higher intensity than most shows would ever go, was probably a big contributor to the size of the fandom.

As for the show's popularity...well, it may seem funny in 2014, but back in the day, it was considered one of the most violent and edgy shows out there. I think the moral guardians regularly had conniption fits over it.

Well, the remake movie was mostly played for laughs and gay jokes, so I don't know...

Buddy shows are still popular, like the Hawaii 5-0 remake, so maybe it would work. :-)

I've read things about how at the time, the show was really popular and "made friendship cool." Like, it was cool to have a best friend and have people refer to you as Starsky and Hutch.

Oh. I didn't realize until now that I don't know which one is which either. Whenever someone gushes about Hutch(?) fainting in Starsky's(?) arms because of an episode where there is an incurable disease, or how often Hutch(?) does the thing or something, I just sit there and get warm heart cockles.

I didn't even care to straighten that out because they just come as a brown/blond set that is highly affectionate toward eachother orz

To be fair a lot of the big things that happen to them are things that could have easily happened to the other one, but the writers seem to have them take turns when getting whaled on to keep the balance. They do differ a lot in how they react to the things that happen, though, since they have very different personalities.

Hutch = tall blond dude, better educated, probably richer and easier background, much more neurotic, more insecure, worse temper but less violent, health nut, can be sorta mean and bitchy to Starsky when things are normal (but not when things are bad)

Starsky = curly dark haired dude, uneducated, unsophisticated, probably poorer family from New York if the accent and mannerisms are anything to go by, loves to bug Hutch, very cheery and easygoing when things are normal, frequently punches people who piss him off
