(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 12:13 am (UTC)(link)s. http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/force-nature-man-rubber-suit-back-look-back-60-years-godzilla-king-monsters/
Originally Godzilla was inspired by an accident involving a test-detonation of a hydrogen bomb by the U.S. resulting in the fatal irradiation of several Japanese fishing boats crews.
See that in the light of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. It's not directly about the American, it's about the atomic bomb itself, yes. But taking this part of American responsibility out of the story is shitty as fuck.
“We’ve taken it very seriously and the theme is man versus nature and Godzilla is certainly the nature side of it,” said Edwards in a July 2013 interview.“
force of nature, ok. but appropriating the story by rewriting it so that Americans shoot atomic bombs to stop godzilla, as it's at least rumoured? that's just wrong in my opinion, if you call it white washing or not.

But yeah, considering its origins, the change in the script sucks.

The fact that somebody thinks a thing is terrible and somebody else does not only means that they have different standards or different levels of awareness.
Popularity doesn't make a work perfect or even better than a less popular work.
We are all unfairly biased in some ways.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 02:05 am (UTC)(link)Yes, Godzilla originally bore some serious metaphoric weight as a manifestation of postwar Japanese atomic fears. That was the first movie. Of dozens.
Later, he became a more ambiguous figure in subsequent movies, like in Destroy All Monsters when he teamed up with Rodan and Mothra to fight Ghidorah, and then he became a flat-out hero when he fought enemies like Mechagodzilla or Hedorah. (Indeed, Godzilla vs. Hedorah is a Godzilla movie about the dangers of environmental neglect and pollution, so there's precedent for that too.)
The character of Godzilla has served a VARIETY of purposes over his history, and frankly, it's a little pathetic of American activists to ignore all the work put in by Toho in favor of freezing the character at a single point that happens to push their white-guilt buttons. You do not get social justice points for ignoring what Japanese artists have actually done, just because it doesn't fit a narrative you find convenient.
TL;DR: Don't lecture people on what Godzilla is "really" about if you don't actually know very much about Godzilla.
I have a stupid question
