[Bravely Default]

I've been thinking about picking this up. Aside from creepiness, is it any good?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
If you like JRPGS, you'll probably love it.

I think Kotaku gave a fair and accurate review:

Yes, although I'll add a spoiler-ish warning that the latter half of the game requires redoing events that happened in the first half several times. How long it takes depends on how much you want to explore again.

I'm having a lot of fun with it aside from that, but it's a decent enough chunk that I felt it deserved mentioning.

I'm on the second half now and I'm enjoying the re-do. The best characters were killed far too quickly the first time round.

It's very good and very long. Lots of value for your money if you like rpgs.

Most of the creepy stories are side-quests you can avoid (unless you want to collect all the jobs, which you'll probably want to do anyway).

I thought the skeeviest quest which you can't escape is the one that involves a beauty contest. There are several male characters who incessantly comment on how much skin the girl in the contest needs to show, and it goes on forever and they keep referring back to her embarrassing outfit later for lols. I did not need that, especially as the art makes them all chibi and young.

Apart from the skeevy sexism above, other creepiness includes:

- a compulsory storyline involving child slaves in a mine
- children being killed/taken over by plants (and their own stupidity)
- a storyline which includes people suffering of thirst
- a storyline about an abandoned child which does not end well

And of course the main gameplay is about battles, so you kill a cast of thousands. But you're cute as you do it.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I actually thought the beauty contest was funny, because the writers make no attempt to give Ringabel and Yulyanna any dignity at all while they perv out over bikinis. They're very clearly the butt of the joke, even if they don't realize it. ("Every woman to put it on has instantly and irrevocably hated me!")

Also, I give the game kudos for not actually making Agnes wear that thing. Putting it on just wouldn't be in-character for her.

I just finished it, and while there were a few moments here and there that fell flat to me and the voice acting wasn't all that great, overall I just adore it, not least because of what happens to the ultra-annoying character I hated from the start. The weird thing is, it's kind of made me want to replay FFXII for some reason. Not entirely sure why, but I'm certainly not complaining.

What is this game about? It looks interesting.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
On the surface, it's almost literally Final Fantasy V redux. World is decaying, heroes searching for crystals to restore it, vague forces that seek to prevent the restoration for as-yet-uncertain reasons, gameplay based around a complex class system that characters can be freely swapped around in . . . The difference is one of theme. FFV was about the passing of the old guard and the coming of new heroes. BD is about orders--following orders, disobeying orders, and the consequences of both. It's an interesting subject for a JRPG to take on.

Hmm, I'm not so fond of searching for macguffins but the rest sounds like something I would like.

yeah, I was also surprised at how uhhh... casually dark the game is. But I'm a bit further in and the bad guys are so textbook evil that I can barely take it seriously anymore. just rolling my eyes now.

[personal profile] inevitableentresol 2014-03-06 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I had a few o_0 moments at the start (the first 15 hours or so) but I got used to the dark world/cute art combo and it doesn't disquieten me so much now.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
seriously. when I first started playing, I wasn't sure if the bosses were actually being killed off or not. and then when they definitely were, I spent some time wondering why the group never seemed to have moral hangups on murdering everyone they came across before just shrugging it off and moving on.

:O spoil it for me, will you? I *never* buy games anymore and I am sorely tempted because I played the demo and liked the controls, and the game is really pretty. But I'm a weakling. If it's scary I don't want to play it.

[personal profile] loracarol 2014-03-06 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm curious about the hairpin thing, and the "seducing any woman" thing that the OP mentioned, and I'm probably not going to ever play it...

OP, would it be alright to ask you for spoilers on these two points as well? I'm not really in a place right now to start any video games, so I doubt I'll ever play it, but I am curious...

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but MAJOR SIDEQUEST SPOILERS:

The hairpin thing consisted of one of the villains killing sacred fairies near a previously devout village that had since become materialistic (thanks to their help) and using their wings to make hairpins and drive whoever wore them insane, as well as bring out the worst qualities because they were affected by chemicals emitted from the wings.

The seduction was a red mage who used pheromones to lure women in and charm them to do whatever he wanted before he killed them. After they were dead he used their bodies to make more pheromones.

/END SPOILERS

I may have missed some stuff, but that's the gist of it.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I've gotten to chapter 5. So far, nothing has topped the hairpin sidequest.

Hairpins are selling at surprising volume and for exorbitant prices. When folks spend enough time around them, they just have to have one of their own. You follow, and try to protect, two little girls who're tracking the source of the hairpins.

Turns out they're made from fairy wings--ripped off while the fairies are still alive. It's pretty over the top, but the villain's voice actress really sells the pleasure she takes in their "adorable" screams. The reason for such a macabre material is that when removed, the wings produce a scent that causes obsession and ultimately madness--the goal is to destroy the entire town in the conflict over the hairpins. When the villain attacks, you're too busy fighting her off to protect the children--afterwards, you find that they've killed each other with their bare hands while fighting over some of the pins.

Like I said, over the top. But it's not what I expected from a game like this.

It's the fact that they're children that's shocking. A lot of bad things happen to children in Bravely Default.

I had the same reaction when reading The Hunger Games. But that didn't have cutsey art, so with a game like this which is super pretty and chibi it's more surprising.

Ah, well now I'm really curious about BD now. The demo's been sitting in my 3ds for ages, but I just haven't had the urge to try it, and someone gave me the impression the NA version was heavily censored (something about loli bikinis I think they ranted about?).

But now you're telling me there is some wacky thing going on about a hair clip? Interest rejuvenated!

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, the outfit thing could be a secret of its own. Who wants to play a game where teenage girls dress like this?

They censored some of the outfits the main characters wore. But only really slightly. I've seen the comparison art. Personally, I'm glad and find the changes entirely appropriate. Tastes are different in different countries.

If you try the demo you'll know if you like it pretty quickly. The gameplay is similar but the demo is a complete little game in itself. I was impressed by how they did it. If you play the demo and then the game, the game has entirely new content from the start. You're not just replaying the demo for the first 1/2 hour of the game (like the Ace Attorney Dual Destinies demo did, which I expected but it was still tedious).
