And there you go an example that also serves as my contribution to this: Ask whatever and I will try to give an honest answer, no question is too stupid and I am not easily offended.

Has your winter been as freakishly warm as ours (Finland here)? Please tell me that you are buried in snow and could go and skate on the roads. I mean, it's currently raining outside and I can see the damn dirt on the ground.

Edit: Sorry that got a lot longer than I meant it to be, but all you need to know is: Yes our winter sukcs too...

Well I am sorry to dissapoint you, I live in Lillehammer the city known for its stable and cold winters, it rained today... We have a bit of snow left, but yeah pretty much the same as you.

My city had a pretty good winter. ...when it arrived after Christmas, the rest not so much... (With the exception of the most Northern parts, but I am pretty sure they didn't get as much snow as they should have)

The weather is just insane and unnatural and even if I don't really enjoy snow or the cold, but we have had an average of like -15C instead of -30C so...

Heck from Christmas and until like 2 weeks ago half of Norway was burning, and I don't mean metaphorically, two of the fires burned down 40 and about 60 houses, and a lot of individual fires burned down stuff all over.

At points counties had like 4-5 fires going at the same time... And that was on top of like 50 wood/grass fires, basically all of it because it was cold but no snow or rain*.

The worst of it was in my home county so twice I thought my family was in danger of it, because I head their cities and "out of control fire" on the radio news without hearing the rest. Thankfully they were okay and as far as I know no one died in any of the fires.

*I talked to two different people back in my home county and they both pointed out that it rained for like the second time this year, if this continues not only will more houses burn down, but electricity will become seriously expensive.

Well, let's hope that the summer will have a more "traditional" weather.

I saw those fires in the news and they looked nasty. Some older villages burned partly to the ground, if I remember correctly? But good to hear that no-one got killed.

Let's! If the weather continues to be this weird I don't know what to do...

Yes, yes they were, two villages basically burned to the ground. I am pretty sure no one was killed, I can't remember hearing about any deaths at least. and now I will feel horrible if anyone actually did die.

I hope this doesn't sound too stupid, but...do people still somehow feel connected to the whole Viking mythology/history, or not at all?

Re: Norway:

[personal profile] making_excuses 2014-03-08 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
In some ways yes, it is a major part of our history and we are taught about both the vikings and Norrøn mythology in school from a young age, learn to write in runes*. We also protect and go on field trips to see remains of Vikings. Personally I feel a connection to the Norse Gods and the vikings, in a kinda spiritual sense and I am not alone.

In others, not so much... We have been a Christian country since The Battle of Stiklestad in 1030 when Norway was unified under one king and so on. (that is the simple/short explanation) so a lot of work was made to alienate us from our old good and way of life. On the Christian country thing, until quite recently Norway was a Christian state, but we are probably one of the least religious people on earth and if you are religious it is common to keep it personal.

Edit: And no it wasn't a stupid question!

*Just our names and the alphabet mind you

Why would you bestow Lutefisk on the world? Just.. why would you do that?

Also are you all really blonde Vikings? Because that's just kind of what it seems like.

Lutefisk is awesome*! I won't hear anything else, if you are gonna complain about our food, complain about Smalahovud!

Wanna hear the story of how Lutefisk was first discovered? Or well the one I was told...

And oddly enough the Finns look more like the Norwegian stereotype than Norwegians... My hair colour is more normal, dark blonde, commonly known as "county coloured" in Norway.

*I might or might not be the only person under the age of 50 that actually likes Lutefisk, but yeah.

I have to assume you're nuts. Or it's a really acquired taste. Or ...something.

But yes, please tell me this story, I would like to know more.

I am not nuts I just prefer fish over meat and have my whole life...

Well it goes like this: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0bbGH7MahME

And if you can't hear and/or understand that I will type it out.

Not OP, but I've had lutefisk and liked it. It wasn't the weird jellied stuff I've heard described, though. I think it matters how it's prepared.

I remember hearing in a lit class that Norway has 2 writing systems. Is that right or am I misremembering?

You are correct, Bokmål and Nynorsk...

Bokmål is pretty much a Norwegianized version of Danish and the one most of us use as a primary writing language
Nynorsk (NewNorwegian) is based on our dialects and is closer to how most of us speak, but in the minority,

You are taught both at school, but the one you have as a second "language" is only taught for about 8th to 13th grade and not as it's own subject. We can all read in both of them, but the ones of us with Bokmål as the main one are really bad at Nynorsk. The law says that both sets should be used and you can get any official document in the one you choose, a percentage of our news/subtitles and books are also supposed to be written in Nynorsk.

Think of them as UK/US English just even more spelling differences and some grammar ones, most of us end up writing closer to Swedish than Nynorsk when we try...

Re: Norway:

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Just chipping in to add on that though Bokmål and Nynorsk are not taught as separate subject we still get separate grades on them. Schools also gets to decide how they want to split the time between the two, so that means some get a decent amount of time on the secondary language and some get very little, so if you happen to get your secondary language as your written exam subject a lot of people are quite fucked as they have not been taught the subject enough.

Here in Minnesota, the "culture" is kind of descended from Norwegian immigrants, so we eat lefse, lutefisk and krumkake, etc. We also say "uff-da" as a sort of phrase of exasperation.

But I heard in actual Norwegian, "uff-da" has a totally different meaning. Is that true?

My other question is, how much about the native mythology (Odin, etc) does an average person know? Do you study that in school?

Re: Norway:

[personal profile] making_excuses 2014-03-08 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
"uffda" is commonly used to children if they fall down and stuff along those lines. But also as a sort of "that sucks" expression.

Quite a lot, but varying depending on the person. And we learn Norse myths in school from 1st grade and up to 8th or so grade, so we all know of it and are pretty well versed in the major stuff. (I myself actually kinda suck, but that is because I forgot quite a lot)

And we do know enough that I don't think you can find a Norwegian that watched Thor and didn't complain about the wrongness of it*...

*Yes, yes I know it is based on a comic book and all that, but in what world is Thor and Loki brothers?

Re: Norway:

It is entirely possible you do not have a response to this. Perhaps Swedish!anon does, if they are here (it's like 4 or 5 in the morning, isn't it??). Anyway, at some point I heard that a good number of Swedes don't like the Muppets' Swedish Chef... because they think he sounds Norwegian, not Swedish. Confirm/deny/thoughts?

Re: Norway:

It is 4 in the morning, but I am still awake.

I dunno, I haven't actually heard The Swedish Chef, except an Australians impression of it, but if he sounds Norwegian they would be happy to make fun of him.

They referenced him when they hosted Eurovision: http://youtu.be/7atEMPN4F0o song from 2.20ish

Edit: Tho I would watch the whole film, you get to see the Swedes make fun of themselves, which is a pretty Scandinavian thing to do, change some stuff and you got Norway.
