I assumed this was more to do with casting in the show than actual racial diversity in the books.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
This was my thought as well. I didn't think anything about it in the books, but the scene at the end of last season where lily white Dany crowdsurfs over an ocean of very brown people was...kind of noticeable.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It was shot in Morocco. Image google "Morocco people". Look at how close to Spain Morocco is and how similar their skin tones are with the Spaniards.

Tan = POC to US people.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you misfire? I'm confused as to your point.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
They happened to shoot that scene in Morocco. That is all.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Right. They sort of stumbled across the ocean and accidentally landed in a country where everyone is brown.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Moroccans are not fucking brown.

They landed in a country which matched the scenery required - namely a big desert and a coastline - and a sufficient number of skilled film crew to staff their production. It's what we in the real world call "filming on location"

Okay, I am not a SJW, but I don't get how this is so hard. "Race" can be really ambiguous because how we define it can be really arbitrary. That being said, dark skin tones tend to equal disadvantage, especially if you have a dark skin tone and features that aren't clearly European white.

A shot of a very very pale white lady saving dark skinned slaves doesn't strike you as a little cringe-worthy? I don't think this is a SJW thing, because it's not a far out crazy observation. It is still white savior, at least in the TV series.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)

Where? I have no disadvantage when I visit a country north to mine with paler people, like the Netherlands or Denmark.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
...are you seriously going to argue this.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That the world is not America? Yep.

I think a non-white person is pretty qualified to argue that non-white people aren't necessarily privileged in places outside of America/Europe.

lol my sister has tan skin and she's as privileged as can be. Tan-ness isn't the only determinant of racism, o obfuscating one.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Classism is another story.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Visiting a country =/= living there. Living somewhere you'll quickly discover prejudices you never had to think about when you're traveling.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
(AYRT and who has actually lived in different places other than her home town and country)

But many of those prejudices aren't based on race but on non-being-local.

lmao yes tell me more about the continent I have actually lived and traveled into, plus North Africa where I come from in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
My mother tans up as dark as a native Indonesian, which probably saved her life during the communist purges in Indonesia (she's of Chinese descent).

It's almost like the American model of race was developed for American circumstances and can't be applied the world over unmodified because the world is a complex, fucked up place?

"dark skin tones tend to equal disadvantage, especially if you have a dark skin tone and features that aren't clearly European white."

Where? You can't answer the US or Europe now, tho, because that leaves the rest of the world and dozens of countries where dark skin tones are the majority. We've built our own societies without constantly relating ourselves to white people so that line is extremely condescending.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Oh you're asking what areas that aren't the US or Europe have problems discriminating against darker skinned people?

Latin America
Africa
Asia (especially India comes to mind, as well as between South-east Asians and lighter skinned East Asians)
Australia

...hmm, is that list all? Yes, even in non-white majority countries there is still a problem. Where you blame white colonialism or whatever, you can't pretend this isn't a problem. Unless you are honestly ignorant? Okay?

But, you know, racism against people doesn't exist, not even when it's a white person living in a non white society. They are always the privileged ones.

yeah, especially for casual viewers.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Uhhhhhh you should probably clarify that you're talking about America here. Because this is most certainly not the case around the world.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Except their skin tones are completely different. Are you that blind?
